SAN JUANICO BRIDGE

 Bridge Classification:
 Structure: Truss bridge and it is forming an arch-shaped in the middle.
 Materials: Steel bridge and Reinforce Cement Concrete (RCC) Bridge.
 Span: It’s a long span bridge having a span length of 192 m and 43 spans with a total
length of 2164 m.
 Level of Crossing: Over Bridge because it allows a traffic to pass over a sea.
 Function: Highway bridge because it allows vehicle to pass through.
 Inter Span Relation: Continuous bridge because we can see the bridge having a long
span so there is more support.
 Utility: It is a permanent bridge because it is constructed for long term use and it’s
maintained by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
 Position of Floor: Through bridge because the super structure of the bridge is above
the flood level and formation level.
 High Flood Level (HFL) – High Level Bridge because it’s not submersible against flood.

 History
 The construction of the bridge was taken place in the year 1969 and it was finished in
the year 1973.
 Total construction cost ₱154 million, which was acquired through Official
Development Assistance loans from Japan’s Overseas Technical Cooperation Agency
(OTCA).
 It was constructed by the Philippine National Construction Corporation (PNCC).
 It was designed by engineer Arvin L. Valderama and Christian Maynard Barnal.
 Formerly called Marcos Bridge in honor of the late President Marcos.
 This bridge is also dubbed as “The Bridge of Love” since the bridge serves as the
birthday gift to the wife of late President Marcos, as this was opened for public use in
July 2, 1973 on the birthday of Imelda Marcos.
 On September 22, 2002, a barge rammed into the concrete foundation of the bridge
causing a ₱25 million damage. Also on October, a portion of the bridge slid down by
at least 10 cm after a metal support gave away.
 This bridge was slightly damage in November 13 due to the typhoon Haiyan or better
known as typhoon Yolanda but was repaired immediately and reopened after one
month.
