Experiment No. 02
I. Introduction
In a school laboratory, the meter stick, balance and stopwatch are used to
measure distance, mass and time respectively. In this activity, the student will learn to
measure small distances using vernier caliper and micrometer caliper.
II. Objectives:
1. To learn how to manipulate and use the vernier caliper and micrometer caliper.
2. To measure the thickness of a thin coin, a page of a paper, and also
the diameter of the human hair.
3. To measure the inner and outer diameter of a hollow cylinder.
III. Apparatus/Materials:
Vernier caliper, micrometer, coins, hollow cylinder, a piece of paper, and a strand
of hair
1
IV. Procedure:
1. Acquaint yourself with the features of the vernier caliper and micrometer caliper.
The vernier caliper is used by first reading the zero mark of the vernier on the
scale. The fractional part is added by determining the reading of the coincidence
between the vernier and the scale.
The last count on the micrometer is 0.01mm. The micrometer caliper has a fixed
jaw, called the anvil, and a movable jaw, the spindle. The object to be measured is
placed between the anvil and the spindle. The spindle is moved toward or away from
the anvil by turning the thimble. If the micrometer caliper has a ratchet stop, turn the
thimble by means of this ratchet. When the spindle exerts the proper pressure on the
object being measured the ratchet stop will slip and will not allow further turning.
3. The results of the test shall be presented in the table shown below
- it is difficult to find the accurate measurement of small things using meter stick
because meter stick is intended to measure objects in inches.
