Logic and critical thinking

Discuss the ambiguities on which the following seven arguments depend:

1.Ben is a person who is a good quarterback. Therefore, Ben is a good person.

2.Nuclear power is environmentally safer than other types of energy because it does not increase atmospheric
carbon.

3.All dissidents are not revolutionaries. Lenin was a dissident. Therefore he was not a revolutionary.

4.Among all primates, only man is capable of producing great music. Sarah Chang (a famous concert violinist) is not
a man. Therefore, Sarah Chang is not capable of producing great music.

5.All material things are made up of atoms and molecules, which have space between and within them. Therefore,
objects that appear to be solid, such as tables and chairs, are not really solid.

6. God must exist, because only God can perform miracles, and it is a miracle that I passed my physics exam.

7. Alzheimer’s [disease] is common; the Queen is not common. Therefore the Queen has not got Alzheimer’s.

Discuss within your group and write the summary:

Have you ever argued with anyone about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable? What are the criteria for
whether something is a vegetable or a fruit? Can you think of a situation in which it would be important to clarify
these vague terms?
