Brief Description
This course covers symbols used in electrical, electronic circuits and architectural drawings. It
also introduces Electrical Power generation, transmission, substation and distribution wiring
diagrams and highlights aspects of design, modeling, interpretation and Computer Aided Designs
and applications.
Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are as follows:
1. To equip the student with the knowledge of different types of drawings and wiring
diagrams
2. To master designing, modeling, interpretation and be able to use
Computer Aided Designs and applications.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize and be able to apply the different types of symbols used in electrical,
electronic and architectural drawings.
2. Identify, interpret and draw machine, power and control circuits.
3. Identify needs of different designs, modeling and interpretation of circuit drawings
4. Discuss the basics of Computer Aided Designs and be able to use them.
Detailed Course Outline
Engineering drawing review 12hrs
Use of symbols in electrical, electronic and architectural drawings, composite line diagrams and
machine control circuit
Power systems diagrams 8hrs
Generation, transmission, substation, and distribution diagrams
Introduction to design 10hrs
Design cycle, needs identification, design brief and ideas, modeling, developments and
interpretation. Introduction to computer aided design-review and relevant applications
Practicals 30hrs
Mode of Teaching/delivery
The course will be taught by using lectures, demonstrations, practicals and tutorials. Basic
lecture materials provided by the lecturers will be supplemented by individual reading effort of
the students.
Mode of Assessment
The students will have Continuous assessment through assignments, tests, practicals and final
written course examination. Their relative contribution to the final grade is shown below:
