Course Introduction:
This course is focused on the analysis and application of the power electronic converters that includes the uncontrolled
and controlled rectifiers, single phase, three phase inverters, buck, boost, buck-boost dc-to-dc converters, switch mode
power supplies, ac voltage controllers, matrix converters, power system utilities and power electronic control of
electric machines. Internal and terminal characteristics of power semiconductor switching devices such as power
diode, fast recovery diode, thyristor, power BJTs and MOSFETs.

Course Objectives:
 To provide a theoretical and practical background in power electronics devices and circuits, long with the
engineering analysis, design, and laboratory skills.
 To study the principles of static power conversions, PWM techniques for voltage and frequency control,
circuit design consideration, and application of power electronics.
 Computer-aided analysis and design of power electronics circuit will be emphasized.

 Introduction to power electronic devices and their control.
 Operation and characteristics of power diodes.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of single phase uncontrolled rectifier with resistive and highly inductive
load.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of three-phase rectifier with resistive and highly inductive load.
 Design of rectifier circuits, forward and reverse characteristics of thyristor, two-transistor model of thyristor.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of single phase controlled rectifier with different loading condition.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of three phase controlled rectifier with resistive and highly inductive
load.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of ac voltage controllers, analysis of cycloconverters and matrix
converters.
 Switching characteristics and operation of BJTs, MOSFETs and IGBTs. Calculation of switching losses of
BJT.
 Basic operating principles. Analysis and design of buck, boost and buck-boost dc-to-dc converters.
 Switch mode power supplies.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of single-phase inverters.
 Analysis and performance evaluation of three phase inverters. Voltage control techniques of phase inverters.
