Course Introduction
This course is the first course of power electronics. It covers the use of semiconductor devices as switch, power
switching circuits including AC-DC converters that are also called as rectifiers, DC-DC converters, DC-AC converters
that are commonly known as inverters. The aims of this course are :
 To provide understanding of power semiconductor switches and its control freedom in terms of quadrant of
operation.
 To introduce the principles of analysis and design of circuits utilizing power electronics in a broad range of
applications.
 To provide a comprehensive knowledge about electrical energy conversion and analyzing of power electronic
circuits using basic circuit analysis.
 To enable the students to perform simulations of power electronic circuits in MATLAB/PSIM software.
Course Contents
 Introduction to Power Electronics
 Power diodes
 Power transistors
 Single phase rectifiers (Uncontrolled and controlled)
 Three phase rectifiers (Uncontrolled and controlled)
 DC Choppers
 Inverters
