1. What is inclusive education? Why is inclusion important?


Inclusive education means that all students attend and are welcomed by their
neighborhood schools in age-appropriate, regular classes and are supported to learn,
contribute and participate in all aspects of the life of the school. It is the most effective way
to give all children a fair chance to go to school, learn and develop the skills they need to
thrive.

It is important since some of the benefits of inclusion for children with (or without)
disabilities are friendship skills, peer models, problem solving skills, positive self-image,
and respect for others. This can trickle down to their families as well, teaching parents and
families to be more accepting of differences.
