Understanding the Self

Define the following:

1. Agentic - This refers to the state of an individual which makes other people to direct
their behaviors and pass responsibility for the result of the behaviors of the person
telling them what to do.
2. False-self - It’s the perception of oneself that is in contrast to what he/she really is.
3. Forethought - It’s the way of an individual to plan-out things in his mind in advance.
4. Ideal-self concept - It’s almost the same as the real-world perception of an individual
in terms of seeing oneself, but this refers to how an individual lives his life based on
his/her ideal perception.
5. Intentionality - It’s the capability of every person to conclude with an intention to
how he/she will execute his deeds.
6. Material-self - It’s the state of an individual being more forward to what the
materialistic world offers to him/her.
7. Proactive - This is a kind of an attribute that an individual possesses, this means a
person is willing to give-out and explain to other people how he/she perceives
anything, and having the will to accept constructive criticism.
8. Psychology - Basically, this is a kind of an academic discipline that tries to understand
the nature of behaviour of man. This uses the way of describing, and concluding as to
how every man behaves.
9. Real-self concept - This is the particular concept that a person is more concerned on
to how/what he presents his real-self to the real-world.
10. Self-concept - This is the particular concept that every individual first sees himself.
11. Self-reactiveness - This is the capability of an individual to react in an immediate
manner to what other people deemed to perceive differently.
12. Self-reflectiveness - This is the capacity of an individual to recollect particular
aspects that he/she shared a significant role.
13. Self-regulations - This refers to what an individual does in terms of setting
boundaries in any situation that he/she is deemed to make a definite stand or take.
14. Social-self - This pertains to an individual involved in any social situation.
15. Spiritual-self - This pertains to an aspect of every individual that is more permanent
and unquestionable.
16. True-self - This refers to an aspect of every individual that is more integrated and
connected to the real world.

What are their contributions in Psychology?

1. William James - Universally accepted as the father of American scientific psychology;

2. Murray Bowen - System of theories of the family that is therefore being used in family
therapy; First and only psychologist to be able to describe the behavior of human beings.

3. Carl Rogers - Best known for pioneering the client-centered therapy and humanistic
psychology; Known as the father of researches concerning psychotherapy

4. D.W Winnicott - Influenced the development of object relations theory and developmental
psychology; “The Location of Cultural Experience”

5. Albert Bandura - Most influential in bridging the gap between cognitive theory and
behaviorism; Known as the Father of Social Learning Theory
