Paragraph One
Every day thousands of people pass by or cross over the Ping River in Chiang Mai. Small
boats travel up and down the water and a few locals throw their fishing nets hoping to earn
some keep that day. This is the life of the Ping River and it is something most of us take for
granted. Without it, Chiang Mai would not be what it is today.

Paragraph Two
The Ping, along with the Wang, joins the Yom and Nan rivers, which flow from Sukhothai
and Nan and meet at Nakornsawan to form the Chao Phraya River which then flows through
the heart of Bangkok into the Gulf of Thailand. This liquid route enables people to travel
between the North and the Central for hundreds of years. In 1867, Daniel McGilvery, the first
missionary to the North, took three months to arrive at Chiang Mai from Bangkok via this
route.
Paragraph Three
Evidence of life along the Ping River can be dated back to over 3,500 years ago. The first
recorded settlers were the Lawa people who founded Hariphunchai city in the eighth century.
Later King Mengrai turned his eyes to the South and created an alternative ‘silk road’ along
the Ping River to control the trade routes. Following his success, he created Wiang Kum
Kam as his capital before abandoning it because of the great floods, and finally moved
further north to found Chiang Mai city in 1296.
Paragraph Four
During the 13th century, the Ping River was of great importance to local merchants who
piloted scorpion-tailed boats south towards the central plains, carrying forest products that
would be traded and exchanged for different types of clothing, tools, liquor, and other
consumer goods, such as salt, and canned food that would be taken back to Chiang Mai.
They were traded with land-based merchants who would then distribute the goods via oxen
or horses over the difficult mountainous terrain. The scorpion-tailed boat was designed to
navigate the rocky Ping River because in those days the river was a lot wider and shallower.
Paragraph Five
After the first Chiang Mai railway station was opened in 1922, the main trade routes by the
Ping River had to gradually give way to land transportation. The scorpion-tailed boats which
were the river route then became less important and began to disappear. Even though the
river transportation had been less frequent, communities along the Ping River remained and
has expanded until the present. Residents who live along the river banks used to enjoy the
crystal clear water and serene river. However, today the Ping River has faced drought and
wastewater problems. One of the key factors that worsen the situation is the minimal rainfall
during the rainy season. Another is the illegal releasing of sewage into the river which is a
common practice among those living along the river. The newly-built walkways initiated by
Chiang Mai District Administrative Organization along its banks are often deserted due to
the strong stench of urine and rotten garbage. The river banks are often collection points for
6
rubbish dumped further upstream and the river itself is often blackened and foaming with raw
sewage.
Paragraph Six
When asked what we should do to preserve the future of the river, Apiwat Poomthaisong,
director of Irrigation Office 1 Chiang Mai, said that “We must respect it, care for it and
ensure there is enough water for the generations to come. The Ping is more than a river, it is a
community and to preserve our community, we must preserve our river.”
