At age 21, he was diagnosed with a condition called amyotrophic lateral

sclerosis or abbreviated ALS. He died on March 14, 2018 from
complications from his degenerative disease.

Unlike Stephen Hawking, ALS usually develops between the ages of 40

and 70 but can present at any age. Typically, 10% of patients do not live
for more than ten years, but Hawking, in turn, survived for decades.

As already mentioned Stephen Hawking was a famous astrophysicist

who had a rare and incurable degenerative disease.

ALS is a degenerative neurological disease, caused by the premature

death of motor neurons that carry information from the brain to the
muscles (passing through the spinal cord). The consequence of the
death of these neurons is that these muscles, which allow us to carry
out the most varied movements, gradually get weaker, stopping to
function completely.

It is thought that about 10% of cases of the disease have a genetic

origin, with 90% still of unknown cause. Studies show that ALS is more
common in men than in women.

Despite being an incurable disease, there are treatments for its

progression to slow down and alleviate. The disease, in addition to
multidisciplinary care that involves emotional work, also requires
physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions to be relieved.

Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford and
died in Cambridge on March 14, 2018.

An astrophysicist, recognized for his contribution to science, was also a

Lucasian professor at Cambridge University, occupying the same
position as Isaac Newton as a professor. By coincidence, Hawking was
born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's death and died on the
139th anniversary of Albert Einstein's birth. Hawking will also have
created several theories, such as:

- Singularity Theorem:

Together with Robert Penrose, Hawking developed the basis of the first
singularity theorem, saying that there are places in the universe where
the variables of physics become infinite and concentrated in a single
point.

-Hawking´s theory of radiation:

In this theory Hawking describes a mechanism that occurs inside a black

hole, which involves a reaction between matter and antimatter.
Antimatter also has mass and density, but it has a negative electrical
charge, and Hawking describes the black hole as swallowing antimatter
and thereby reducing is volume.

-The information paradox:

If the black hole ends up completely disappearing after millions of years

by the emission of radiation, then information about it would be lost.
This information would supposedly conflict with the quantum
mechanic’s postulate.

-The cosmic inflation:

He suggested that, before the Big Bang, the universe knew no
boundaries between space and time.
