The Hobbit vs. Harry Potter

Major Differences

The hobbit is more focused on a single journey then on a kid growing up at a school like in Harry Potter

The hobbit is more about magical creatures and does not have that much magic performed by
individuals like in Harry Potter

Harry Potter involves all magic and everyone having the ability to do it
Harry Potter is much longer and is set in much more modern times

The Hobbit deals with a large group of people trying to win back what was there treasure before.

Harry Potter deals with him just fighting the evil to save his own life and the people he loves around him

Movies Made of Both

Both The Hobbit and Harry Potter, Along with The lord of the rings series were turned into major motion
pictures that became extremely successful

Fantasy and Middle Earth are one of the major attractions that both movies offer that bring them tied
together

The movies are taken off the books but they both add extra things in them that were not in the book as
well as leave out parts that were important in the books

They both deal with the epic struggle of good vs. evil

Both are series that are anticipated by crowds years before they are said to be in theaters

Smaug Vs. The Powers of Voldemort

- The evil in both Books

Both are seen as the evil and must be destroyed in the books by the main characters in order for them
to take back what was originally theirs, like in the Hobbit, or in order to live, like in Harry potter

Smaug the dragon can also be compared to the giant slitherin snake in the chamber of secrets book of
the Harry Potter series

Both are deathly creatures that will do anything to kill Bilbo or Harry

In both Books they are able to defeat these evil creatures and live

Both Smaug and Voldemort are killed by the end of the books but they don’t just die without taking out
something else in return

Smaug destroys the town of villagers that the dwarves and Bilbo come from

Voldemort kills Dumbledore and many more of Harry’s friends

Gandalf vs. Dumbledore

Father Figures

Bilbo and Harry

The major similarities and differences

Both Gandalf and Dumbledore are wizards with powers

Gandalf is the father figure to Bilbo and leads him in the right direction, as well as always believes in him
and knows that he will do great things along the journey.
Dumbledore is Harry’s father figure and acts the same way as Gandalf by always believing in him and
knowing he is a lot more powerful then Harry knows.

Both of them also disappear for long periods of time and leave Bilbo and Harry to fend for themselves.
They do this in order to show how independent they can be, and only come to their rescue if they are in
dire need

Both Bilbo and Harry are the hero figures in both books and lead their group to conquer what they are
up against

Both are the leaders of the group and find a way to get out of the difficult situations they are put in
when they are about to be killed

Both Bilbo and Harry were lenient to go on the journey in Bilbo’s case and going to Hogwarts in Harry’s
case

They both find a power that helps them in a time of difficulty. Bilbo finds the ring that allows him to
become invisible to anyone, where as Harry is given the invisibility cloak that allows him to become
invisible when he puts it on as well
