Title: Origin of the Internet

Netflix Originals present the Origin of the Internet

starring Gon and Killua

- Script -
Hussain: One summer day, Gon is locked up in his room -crouching and facing his laptop.
He was busy doing his school requirements when suddenly his internet connection went
down. He was so frustrated and keeps on cursing the internet provider company and then
his friend, Killua, entered his room.

Gon (Hadji Rasul): Oh my god, what the heck! What happened to my connection? I have so
many things to do. We’re paying regularly and this is the kind of service that we get?

Killua (Kamaludin): *enters the room* Hey! Wassup. What happened?

Gon: Well, I’m in the middle of finishing my school requirement when the internet suddenly
went down.

Killua: That sucks bro. I heard there was a problem with the line in the whole street and it
may take a time before it’ll come back.

Gon: Ahhh. Why does it have to be today? I have so many things to do.

Killua: Chill. We can’t do anything about that. How about we just talk so you won’t be bored?

Gon: And what are we going to talk about?

Killua: Hmmm since we’re already talking about the internet, why don’t we tackle its history?

Gon: Why, do you have any idea about it?

Killua: Of course.

Gon: Okay, let me hear it.

Killua: Did you know who invented the internet?

Gon: Well, I have no idea.

Killua: Actually, no one person invented the internet. We cannot pinpoint only one person
because it is actually a product of series of researches and projects that was done and
eventually improve in centuries by a lot of scientists.

Gon: If that is true then how did it actually start? Like what research or invention started all of
this that lead to the internet that we have right now?
Killua: It was the development of the first packet-switching network in 1969 which is a
method of splitting and sending data. Basically, a computer file is broken up into thousands
of small segments called ‘packets’ and distributed across a network, and then reordered
back into a single file at their destination.

Gon: Ahhhh, then what happened next?

Killua: When it was proved that this packet-switching network was successful, the ARPANET
was born which is now what we call INTERNET. Once ARPANET was up and running, it
quickly expanded. And as it grew, a set of rules for handling data packets was needed to be
put in place.

Gon: Oh, let me guess, the next event would be the creation of the transmission-control
protocol, right?

Killua: Yup, you’re definitely correct. This TCP or Internet Protocol (IP) is the set of protocols
that govern how data moves through a network. This also allowed computers to speak the
same language, and it helped the ARPANET to grow into a global interconnected network of
networks.

Gon: And then?

Killua: The development of the Domain Name System and the beginning of email occur. The
invention of this DNS and the popularity of email were the reason behind the explosion of
activity on the internet. With that, the network grew from 2,000 hosts to 30,000 between
1986 and 1987.

Gon: Wow! That’s a lot? How did the people before used the internet?

Killua: It is similar to how people were using it today like for sending messages, reading
news, swapping files, and many more. It’s just that it is much more complex before which
makes it difficult to use for some.

Gon: How did they solve this problem?

Killua: Well, the invention of browsers, HTML pages, and the World Wide Web made it easy
for people to use the internet.

Gon: Ohhh. That’s nice to know. I didn’t know that before.

Killua: Well, I wanna ask you. Do you have any idea how did it contribute to scientific
development?

Gon: I believe its general advantage that we all know and benefit from are the same thing it
contributed to scientific development. For example, through the internet, we can extract an
endless supply of knowledge and information which would allow science researchers and
inventors to learn about any topic or question they may have. Another advantage or
contribution I could think of would be through internet, it is much easier for these researchers
to communicate and connect with other researchers from all over the world in conducting the
research or invention that they are currently working on.

Killua: That’s a good idea, Gon. Now we can appreciate the creation of the internet more.

Gon: Yah, that’s true but I’m still mad at our internet provider.

Killua: Don’t be silly. Just wait and it’ll come back.

Gon: Fine.

Killua: Okay, I need to go now. I also have school requirements I need to finish.

Gon: Bye! Thank you for entertaining me.

Killua: Bye!
