- Before the print age, texts were handwritten by the scribes in the old days, which was the manuscript
age. This was how the communication was until the invention of the printing press in Europe around
1450 by the German inventor Gutenberg.

- The invention of the printing press is the significant technological upgrade that moved humanity from
the manuscript era to the print era.

- When invention of the printing press happened, paper and bookbinding materials become affordable,
leading to books being spread worldwide. People began to know how to read and write which paved the
way to more literate societies. This is the time when paper became cheaper, more printing presses
became advanced, and faster and more reliable transportation technologies became progressive, which
also paved the way for newspapers and magazines to be known as print media. The printing of books
made the people become literate and has allowed them to harness skills in discovering knowledge for
themselves and not just from what they hear from teachers or clergy. The freedom of discovery of new
ideas in the print era was given when books became available to almost everyone. Newspapers became
records of the daily life of societies and provided a public forum for information sharing and debate.

The Audiovisual Age

- Before this age, radio only offer entertainment through sound and it is the work of the people to
visualize what they are hearing from it.

- Wireless telegraphy or radiotelegraphy invented by Guglielmo Marconi who transmitted telegraph

signals by radio waves,opened the door for radio and television broadcasts. The concept of passing
signals then prompted the enhancement to signal transmission and reception. Because of this, the
vacuum tube technology was even upgraded leading to televisions and radios to be more reliable and
compact. The upgrade did not end there as cable and satellite television began to compete with
broadcast television, wherein they provided access to more channels and service in areas where
broadcast signal reception was unreliable like in mountainous regions.

delivered to the public through printing of magazines. People‘s homes became more informed,
entertained and rounded participants of the nation‘s affairs when the television finally came into the

The Internet and Digital Media Age

- Internet features before were too complicated to use and the communication process through would
really test your patience that will eventually lead to boredom which discourage people from using it and
the participants or the audience who want to engage in a communicative platform are limited.

- The development of digital code, microprocessors, and fiber-optic cables were key technological
advances that made the Internet and digital communication possible. Rapid developments around 1990,
such as the creation of HTTP and HTML coding and Internet browsers, created what we know today as
the World Wide Web.

- The Internet brought a wider and collective form of communication. People can just be involved with
what is happening anywhere, anytime and with anyone‘s life. It has allowed for the creation of user-
generated content, thereby raising authenticity issues when it comes to the information being passed
unto different people.

Because of the rapid advancement of technology, we have gained a lot of its useful effects.
Communication became easier, less complicated and more engaging. It had helped us to communicate
with other people from distant places through social media platforms provided by the internet. As the
Internt brought a wider and collective form of communication, all of us can be involved by our own
choice with what is happening anywhere and anytime and with anyone's life. Printing of our paperworks
had become way easier because we need not to write anymore, all we have to do is to put our writings
in the machine and we could already have our writings encoded in hand. The availability of books has
opened the door for all of us of learning new things, discovery of ideas and gaining knowledge that
paved the way for us to be educated and literate. The invention of television also gives us the privilege
to become more informed (it is a privilige because before, access to news information is limited and only
available to fortunate people who could afford to buy newspapers everyday) and updated about all the
things that is happening around the world whether it be for entertainment, involvement as a rounded
participants in the nation's affairs and for our own leisure only. It has also made available for us the
visual component of the sounds that we only get to hear on radios before. But on the other side of the
coin, the society had also lost some things because of the IT transition and utilization. Because of the
invention of printing press, our writing skills had become unpracticed and unused as we always rely to
that modernized machine that would do the work for us. The availability of television which provides
entertainment shows has also become the reason of being unproductive of an individual as watching it
consumes most of our time and we oftenly get hooked into it to the point that we became lazy and
procrastinate in doing things that needs to get done. As television became available, radio become
obsolete which takes away our ability to visualize messages we only here through sounds as given visual
contents is way easier and convenient for our own sake. And lastly, the internet being widely available
for everyone around the globe also had a negative impact to the society. The internet has given people
the opportunity to be involve and engage with anyone's life even if it doesn't concern them which
crosses the boundary of respect and minding oneself's business. As it became a user-generated content,
people could just easily create false rumors and spread it and make people believe that it is credible,
realible, and authentic which is scary because misleading people is never a good thing.
3. The features of computer completely did change and gets improvised even its physical appearance. It
had become handy, affordable, and widely functional. A computer being handy is helpful but
sometimes, it also becomes a nuisance because as an owner who holds a tiny thing that is important and
would have to bring it everyday is frustrating as it would bother me all the time and I would also be
conscious that I might misplace it because of its size. However, in order to not misplace it and not be
bothered, I would place it in a secured computer holder perfect for its size and put it in a personalize bag
where I could carry it and make sure that it doesn't get destroyed. A computer being affordable is also
great but sometimes the "affordable" word influences me to not take care of the things I bought
because I could just buy it again because it's not that pricy anyway. Even if it's affordable, I would handle
it with care to make use of it for a long time and in order not to waste money just because of my
sloppiness. A computer being widely functional is helpful in some particular happenings as it could track
steps, burned calories and sleep patterns but somehow it could also become a huge problem to deal
with if it is used in something inappropriate and violent. Like for example, tracking steps of someone you
hate because you want to get revenge for what he/she have badly done to you is dangerous as it could
get you put in a very unfortunate situation if ever you get caught. Tracking steps could also be used in
stalking someone you like and it's not good because you are already invading their privacy and it's out of
your boundary. These kind of happenings may be quite inevitable but in order not to encounter any of
these, I would have to study these features of computer and also its functions and how could I know
that I am being tracked by someone and I will not make use of the functions to put someone in a bad
situation and use it only for important purposes.
