WIND BELTS

- Wind belts circle the earth and play an important role in weather and climate. The wind belts
are named for the directions from which the circle comes. Wind belts are bonds of moving air
created as a result of the movement of the earth, along with the heat from the sun. There are
two general types of winds. Which are LOCAL WINDS and PREVAILING WINDS. Local Winds is
what we frequently encountered and it blows in any direction. And the Prevailing winds blows
from the same directions and most often travel long distance and it also part of a bigger pattern
of air circulation. There are two factors that affect the direction of the prevailing winds; 1)
unequal heating of the earth’s surface and 2) the earth’s rotation. At the Northern Hemisphere,
the cool air sinks and flows south along the surface towards the equator. This warmer, less
dense air flows northward to the North Pole above the cooler, dense air that’s going southward.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the direction is still North-South but the cool air from the South
Pole moves northward to the equator. The earth rotates and its rotation came from Coriolis
Effect. Coriolis Effect is an effect whereby a mass moving in rotating system experiences a force
(the Coriolis force) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation.
The Coriolis Effect deflects airborne objects in the Northern Hemisphere to the right. Airborne
objects are deflected to the left at the Southern Hemisphere. If a rocket fired from the North
pole the rocket will be landed somewhere to the left. In the northern hemisphere diverging
zones are found in the equator and also near the 60 degree North Latitude.
