A miracle is defined as something not explicable by natural or scientific laws.

But then how can we

explain it? How does it happen? Who or what is behind it? Those are the opening lines of a movie I
love called Miracles From Heaven, released in 2016, directed by Patricia Riggen, and written by
Randy Brown. This American Christian movie was based on a true story adapted from the book of
Christy Beam, which recounts the story of her young daughter, who had a near-death experience
and was later cured of an incurable disease. The Beam family is headed by Christy and Kevin Beam,
with their three beautiful daughters Abby, Annabel, and Adelynn. They were a typical nuclear family
and had their own roles in keeping the family together. Christi and Kevin provide support and
encouragement to their kids, just like most parents do. The kids, on the other hand, are the
peacemaker and treasures of the family. If I were to describe it, I could say that they are a happy
family sustained with all they need. As Christians, they always go to church and put a value on their
family. Every night, before the family sleeps, Christi visits each of her daughter's rooms and asks
them to share their prayers with her. This is what kept their family open to each other. Everything
works out well for the Beams. They are a happy, complete, and healthy family. Not until Anna, their
second child, threw out in the middle of the night. Christy suspected that maybe it was with the food
that they ate. She also noticed that Anna's stomach was bloated. When the morning came, Christi
and Kevin immediately brought Anna to the hospital. The doctor did all tests and procedures and
found nothing wrong with her. He said that maybe Anna is lactose intolerant. They went home, and
after few days, Anna's pain became worse. She was experiencing constant abdominal pain
accompanied by vomiting and bloating of the stomach. She was rushed to the hospital, and the
doctor ruled out that she had a fever and acid reflux. At this point, Christi has gone mad and said
that she knew Anna was suffering more than a fever, acid reflux, or lactose intolerance. Anna was
then again assed by a pediatrician, and after doing series of tests, the doctor said that there was
100% complete abdominal obstruction on Anna's abdomen. Her intestine and bowels are twisted off.
The doctor said that if that obstruction is not cleared immediately, it will cost Anna's life. The doctor
did the surgery and successfully cleared out the obstruction. However, the doctor found out that
Anna had a severe intestinal motility disorder. This happens when someone's body can't process
food. There is no cure for this condition. The doctor advises Christi and Kevin to visit Dr. Nurko, a
pediatric gastroenterologist and America's foremost motility expert based in Boston.

Christi sent letters and called the office of Dr. Nurko countless times, but still, she heard nothing.
They were just on the waiting list because of the doctor's long list of patients from different parts of
the world. This is where she started questioning God. She was so sure that she was not coming
back to the church anymore. She couldn't understand why was her devoted God-loving little girl was
going through an unexplainable condition. She felt hopeless. She felt alone. She was angry their
prayer wasn't answered. She lost her faith. She didn't hear anything from Dr. Nurko, so she decided
to fly Anna to Boston, even without an appointment. When they got there, she tried everything to
persuade the receptionist to allow her to meet Dr. Nurko, but nothing worked. While waiting, they
met a woman in Boston, who toured them around the city to relieve Anna's boredom. Eventually,
Christi received an unexpected call from Dr. Nurko's hospital. They did extensive tests and
procedures for Anna. Dr. Nurko ruled out that Anna had a pseudo-obstruction motility disorder, a
paralysis of the gastrointestinal tract. The doctor couldn't cure Anna's condition, but he could
improve her quality of life and control the pain. The doctor must examine Anna every six weeks, so
Christi and Anna frequently flew from Texas to Boston. This led them to suffer financially, so their
family was obliged to sell some of their stuffs to support Anna's medication. Kevin was juggling jobs
and taking care of Abby and Adelynn. As filling up the position of Christi as a mother, Kevin
encountered difficulties managing the house. Months passed, and Anna was still not responding to
medications. She was undergoing tests here and there. Anna started to lose hope and said she just
wanted to die. She wants to go to heaven, where she cannot feel pain anymore. To support Anna,
Kevin and her daughters decided to fly to Boston to surprise her. In the airport, all of Kevin's cards
were being declined. The teller heard that they were going to visit Anna, who was very sick. The
teller purposely shut the computer to release a ticket manually so that they could see Anna. Anna
and Christi were delighted when Kevin and the girls arrived. Dr. Nurko allowed Anna to go back
home because she was already experiencing depression. He advised Christi and Kevin to support
and be with Anna every time because he believes that family is the best medicine.

While playing outside with her siblings, Anna saw a white butterfly. She and Abby climbed a 100-
year-old hollowed-out cottonwood tree in their yard. The branch they were sitting cracked, so Anna
moved to the other branch. She didn't know where she was stepping, so she fell 30 feet high head
first, right inside the trunk of the tree. The tree was so tall and hollow, and they couldn't get Anna out
without taking down the three. Rescuers, fire trucks, police mobiles, ambulances, helicopters, and
even the media came to help Anna get out of the tree. Hours passed by, and Anna was
unresponsive as everyone called her name. Everything around Christi is a blur and inaudible. She
eventually started praying, as well as all the other people in the scene. Luckily, after 6 hours of
rescuing, Anna successfully got out of the three, and she's still breathing. She was immediately
rushed to the hospital, and the doctor found something strange. The doctor said that nothing had
happened to Anna. She has no broken bones, and she has a complete movement of limbs, no
internal bleeding, and no indication of bruising. The doctor couldn't even explain it. He said he had
never seen anything like it. Days passed by, Anna seems don't need medication anymore, and her
stomach flattened. Anna said that someone told her that she would be fine when she was inside the
hollow tree. She said she could see her body, but she was not in it. The butterfly she was following is
there. She touched it then suddenly she was in another place. She don't know where she was, but
she knew she was safe. Someone talked to her there. She had a conversation with someone without
even saying any words. Anna wanted to stay, but the voice told her she needed to come back. The
voice said that when she came back, she would be healed. Dr. Nurko ran all the tests, and Anna
was now asymptomatic. Christi kept asking what happened. The doctor said that there is no cure for
Anna's condition. But suddenly, she was cured. He said that her patient is now better, and this is a
good-bye. Christi's faith in God was restored. She came back to church and shared a testimony.
She said that miracles are everywhere. Miracles are goodness. They were sometimes showing up in
the strangest of ways through people who are just passing through our lives. Miracles are love.
Miracles are God. And God is forgiveness. Miracles are God's way of letting us know He's here.
