VERMEER SHOWS AUTONOMOUS BALE MOVER

The bale mover concept from American firm Vermeer can travel around fields
autonomously using onboard sensors to locate bales, pick them up and move
them to a predetermined location. The machine is nicknamed the Bale Hawk.
“This machine helps save labour time and associated costs by eliminating
the manual step of moving bales,” says Vermeer research and development
manager Kent Thompson. “The autonomous bale mover senses where it is
relative to a bale, allowing it to plan a route to pick up that bale. Today, it
can pick up three bales at a time before delivering and unloading them to
a predetermined location.

ORANGE OPERATION
Delays with first cut brought big crops for many, with little compromise in quality.
For Wiltshire family farm JD Spencer and Sons, first cut yielded a clamp-busting
33.6t per hectare with an ME (metabolisable energy) of 12 MJ/kg DM to feed its
500-strong herd of Staviland Holsteins plus followers.
“We aim for a consistent quality with each and every cut of grass we take,” says
Henry Spencer of Manor Farm, Langley Burrell. “It starts with a 9.5m plain disc
triple mower and a 6m front/rear combination so we can drop 350 acres a day.”
The 2500-acre family farming business cuts around 1200 acres of grass leys
each year in three cuts. A further 200 acres are allocated to maize, and 800 acres
of winter wheat provide a supply of straw and grain.
Trowbridge-based contractor Ashton Farms provided the four-rotor rake, 585hp
Claas Jaguar 950 forager and JCB 435S Farm Master for the clamp, though the
bumper crop required a rethink with logistics.
A fleet of nine tractors and trailers were occupied for the 10-mile haul from field
to clamp. Half the fleet comprised JD Spencer’s five Union flag-liveried Kubota M7
tractors, ranging from M7151 to M7172 models hauling 14t and 16t trailers.

A LONG WAY
TOGETHER

V-FLEXA
No matter how challenging your needs, V-FLEXA is your best ally for agricultural trailers, tankers
and spreaders. This latest-generation product features VF technology, which enables the
transport of heavy loads both in the fields and on the road at lower inflation pressure. V-FLEXA
is a steel-belted tyre with a reinforced bead that provides durability, excellent self-cleaning
properties and low rolling resistance even at high speeds.
V-FLEXA is BKT’s response for field and road transport with very heavy loads avoiding soil
compaction.

The Fendt 828 arrived in autumn 2020, just in time
for the wet weather, much to Harry’s annoyance as very
little winter drilling was done. Spring 2021 wasn’t much
of an improvement, but by the time we saw the 828 the
year was looking pretty decent. Irrigation had kicked
off and cereals were looking good.

additions. The seat also makes a decent table for dining.

The roof bar is more of a practical addition with LEDs

DEFENDER TESTS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based
on the new Defender, with testing scheduled to begin this year. The FCEV concept is part of JLR’s
aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its supply
chain, products and operations by 2039.
FCEVs generate electricity from hydrogen to power an electric motor and provide high energy
density and rapid refuelling, and minimal loss of range in low temperatures, making the
technology ideal for larger, longer-range vehicles, or those operated in hot or cold environments.
By 2030, forecasts predict hydrogen-powered FCEV deployment could top 10 million with
10,000 refuelling stations worldwide. JLR’s Project Zeus is part funded by the government-
backed Advanced Propulsion Centre and will allow engineers to understand how a hydrogen
powertrain can be optimised to deliver the performance and capability expected, from range to
refuelling, towing to off-road ability.

Suzuki’s first iteration of a compact four-wheel drive was launched in 1970.
The soft-top LJ10, short for Light Jeep, used a 360cc, two-stroke engine but
weighed just 600kg. The LJ20 brought more power and a hard-top version
in 1972. The 1975 LJ50 saw the Jimny name first introduced, while 1977 saw
a more powerful four-stroke engine and a pick-up variant.
The second-generation SJ410 arrived in 1981 and had more of a lifestyle
approach. Its 1.0-litre engine lasted until 1984 when a 1.3 was fitted, known
as the SJ413. A five-speed gearbox was one of many upgrades.
A new, softer looking Jimny arrived in 1998. It was hugely underrated but
won loyal fans during its 20-year production. The current Jimny was launched
in 2018 to great acclaim and demand outstripped supply, before emissions
regulations cut its life short. The 2021 Commercial is now the only model on sale.
