Welcome, dear reader. Thank you for opening the Scrapbook on your electronic device. If I were you, I'd keep it on
there because it is so colourful, it will probably cost you a week's wages to print off.
The Scrapbook is better known as the Christmas Catalogue of the Independent Paperback Gift Shop. For those of you
with Facebook accounts, here is the address:
http://www.facebook.com/TheIndependentPaperbackGiftShop?ref=hl
In here, you'll find a hundred books written by Independent authors. That is, writers who don't work for one of the
major publishers – the so called “Big Eight” whose stranglehold on new writing has existed like a developing world
dictatorship for sixty years.
No more. Here you will find novels. Novellas. Anthologies. Fact. Fiction. Poetry. Children's books.
I'll bet you can find a gift in here for someone you know fairly well – but not well enough to spend a fortune on.
A prosperous relative who is difficult to buy for, maybe. A prodigious reader. A frustrated reader. A reader who has
read everything King, Patterson, McDermid, Childs, Grafton, Meyer, Harrison, Herbert, Gregory, Cooper, Pratchett
and the bloke who wrote Game of Thrones have come up with in the past decade.
A bleak decade where published US and UK writing has retreated into a safe and cuddly comfort zone of its own
making. Reading as a substitute for knitting in front of Strictly Come Dancing with a cup of cocoa and a butterscotch
toffee sweetie.
Not here. Buy a gift from this catalogue and this reader will experience something completely new.
You might be unlucky and buy a book from a writer who shouldn't be in the same room as a word processor. Then
again, you might get lucky and buy a book from a writer who is better than any of the previously mentioned potboiler
constructors – I can think of five off the top of my head; writers who, in any other era, would be published and read
prodigiously. (Lauded maybe. One is so good, she's got agents crawling all over her like woodlice on bark.)
That was a bygone era that didn’t involve guaranteed publishing contracts for humdrum comics like Lee Mack and
Miranda Harvey. Rancid bad ones like Russell Brand (and his ghost) have managed a couple. Can't be right, surely.
That's the glory of it:The sheer glory of Independent Literature. The economic anarchy that followed the Black Death.
The Wild West. The Grand National.
Punk Rock.
If it wasn't for the Clash, the Dolls, the Pistols and the Stranglers, we'd all still be listening to Oldfield and Dylan.
So please. Have a browse. There are starving authors out there waiting to entertain you. And enrich your life. Stop
buying J****** P******** (name of cash-absorbing idea vacuum famous author money sponge
deleted for legal reasons) another yacht moored on St Tropez harbour next to some plundering Chechen oligarch,
wrinkly rocker, or owner of a plastic Premier League football club . He doesn't need it. Mateys.

NB: The views expressed above are personal and may or may not be shared by the authors and small press publishing
companies highlighted in the Indielit Scrapbook..
The boring-but-necessary bit Part II: Notes to Authors
1) This is a scrapbook. I've found as much detail as I can on each of you and included it. There are some
reviews, some extracts, photos and links on each item. Your cover is included as standard, but that is all.
2) The scrapbook is for Paperbacks, but if your readers want the e-books, that's fine by me.
3) Nothing is categorised by genre, alphabetical order etc. Its a browsing scrapbook for Gift Buyers and
Readers. I've mixed everything up to give everyone a fair chance. I'm really short on YA stuff and erotica.
Not sure why. Maybe next time.
5) If I know you, or have interviewed you for The Wizards Cauldron, or you replied in plenty of time, you
have a one page feature. Otherwise you share. If you want a feature in the Summer Holiday Special (May
2013), then get to know me and the Gift Shop. (Stands to reason, guv.)
6) The order in which I have laid out the features is random and cannot be influenced by brib...advertising.
7) The more READERS and GIFT BUYERS who see this, the more the whole concept of Indielit becomes
imprinted. There's a limit to how much we can pimp to each other on Facebook.
8) Please circulate this scrapbook as far and wide as possible and encourage the READERS and GIFT
BUYERS to do the same.
3) Type in either the name of the book and/or the name of the author in the Amazon Browser. You'll arrive –
its a fantastic database.
There are also links a-plenty to author websites. Please read them and get to know more about us and our
books.

(Mary Ann Bernal: “The Complete Briton and the Dane Trilogy” 2010 – 2012”)
Friend of the Gift Shop, anglophile, historian, one woman helpdesk, top quality
writer, Indielit guru, editor and font of all knowledge, if there is a more popular
member of the Indie community than New York's finest, Mary Ann Bernal, I've yet
to meet her.
I fell in love with medieval England after I read Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe. Then came
the great Hollywood epics such as Knights of the Round Table, Prince Valiant, The
Black Shield of Falworth and The Vikings, to name but a few. Add to the mix Camelot
and an incurable romantic Anglophile was born! The Briton and the Dane novels are set
in Ninth Century Anglo-Saxon Britain when the formidable Vikings terrorized the
civilized world. The epic adventure runs the gamut of deception, treachery, intrigue, and
complicated relationships during a time of war and conquest.

from every pore on my body, proving to me that we were back in Vegas, or some equally
hot place. The black plastic burned my skin everywhere it touched, my face enduring the
most of it when my arms got too tired to hold it up. I was not going to be pretty for a few
hours after this jaunt. I could hear Nathaniel cursing somewhere beside me, undoubtedly
being barbequed right along with me. The truck we were in the back of hit so many
bumps on the way that my skull threatened to crack with the repeated blows. After a long
torturous ride, we finally came to a stop. I was jerked from the bed, my head smacking
against the ground, when they let me fall headfirst. My fangs sliced into the sides of my
tongue gouging holes in my cheeks as well. Blood filled my mouth and helped me temper
the pain radiating from my skull. A hiss escaped me, right before I heard another loud
thud, and an even louder growl from Nathaniel. I had no doubt about his intentions for
these men, if he got half the chance.

Cecilia started to feel very, very dizzy. She flopped to the ground and Flurry came
and lay beside her, panting wildly. She lay there gazing at the big, fluffy, white clouds floating
in the sky. She could see different shapes in the clouds: a face with a long, pointy nose drifted
past; the Loch Ness Monster glided through the sky, followed by a space ship, a canoe and a
gigantic snail.
The cotton-ball clouds started moving faster, swirling and whirling. She shut her eyes
to make them stop, but before you could say, “Don’t dilly-dally down daydream alley” a witch
had zoomed down on her jet-propelled broomobile.
Flurry barked and growled, and Cecilia sprung to her feet. “Quick run for it!” she
shouted to Flurry. But it was too late.
The witch swooped down and swept Cecilia onto her broomobile. The witch and

“It seems that correct use of the magnificent

In such a world, Sue Lobo is a shining beacon that shines straight in the
faces of the iconoclasts, the lazy, the trendy, the textmen, the

Like many educated in the old colonies of a now bankrupt and discredited
empire, Sue brings to the table a copious vocabulary, beautifully
punctuated, with flawless balance and an eye for semantic detail. Even if
you are not generally a reader of memoir, like me, I read this and
marvelled at her ability with the pen.
It's like stepping back fifty years where even the thug, the blackguard, the

Why Buy Indie, Brian? Buying Indie allows readers to escape from the

uncharted waters of unknown writers and what they have to offer.
It gives us the opportunity to kick up our literary heels and live
dangerously for a change.
Why Buy Indie, Kyle? “Indie authors do not write for fame and

formed an unlikely sail behind her forty feet long. Charlie, as did the two
females behind him, wore deep, almost opaque sunglasses. The sunlight
refracted from the glass beads of sand shimmered in a blinding
kaleidoscope. The light danced against Gabrielle’s white outfit, making it
seem alive with color.”

Why buy Indie, Toi? As an equally passionate lover of cinema, as I am of literature, I find that,
sometimes, Hollywood can’t fulfill my cinematic needs. That’s when I turn to the indie industry.
I’d say the same goes for books, but with books the indie world has so much more to offer.
The world of indie books and authors is more personal and varied than the cookie cutter world of
publishing house novelists and their devoted and detached fans. I’ll never turn my back on the
classics and the big publishing houses will always manage to pump out some bestsellers, but
sometimes I want something that’s a little more creative. Only from the world of indie, can I get a
chance to experience ideas that don’t fit into the norm or always have mass appeal.
“Like many nights before, his body had become drenched in sweat as he lay beneath his sheets. While he tossed and turned in his bed, he became
entangled in the fabric as it began to cling and stick to his body. As he dreamed of war, Giovanni could feel the warmth of a slow burning fire growing all
around him. The intensity of the battle in his mind was so great that heat began to radiate from his body as though he were actually in the line of fire and
apart of the battle.”

Maggie Secara's "Molly September" is rich in historical detail, extraordinarily well-researched ...
and downright brilliant.
The title character is the well-to-do daughter of the late privateer, Rafe September, reputed to be
one of the finest ship's pilots ever known in Port Royal and its environs. Molly chafes under the
mores of Restoration-era life, with conservative relatives as guardians -- who plan to marry her off to a
thoroughly unpleasant gentleman.
When Molly meets Dick Prentiss, the now-pilot of her late father's ships, her world is set on its ear --
in more ways than one. Soon, she finds herself at sea with her father's crew, and gets an education in
life and love that catches her by surprise.
Secara's tale is richly woven, with prose so evocative that I swore I could *smell* things she wrote
about. She has created a convincing world peopled with fascinating characters and their stories.

aI'm glad I did.
I read it all in one day and couldn't stop laughing. The images/stories are classic "blonde jokes" that happen
to a man, not a woman. With a tongue in cheek attitude this book doesn't demean blondes, rather it shows
the many human foibles in a humorous manner. With a writing style similar to Garrison Keillor it's a very easy
read and I was actually a little disappointed when I finished the book. I didn't want it to end. “ (Amazon)

“I got hooked on the book during the first few chapters. It was dark and entertaining.
The book took a lighter turn though making it more age appropriate. That said,
I do wish the dark forboding kept on. Maybe as Holly grows up the situations will darken and
suit my tastes better. Most ages will enjoy this book but I think it is ideal for the young adult
market at the younger spectrum specifically. I cant wait to see what happens to Holly as she

There are so many great new authors out in the marketplace trying to be read. Typically, most
people buy works by well know authors and never get beyond the well established publications.
After having read several books by new and independent authors, I have come to realize that there
are some wonderful stories waiting to be recognized and read. I have read some exciting and
amazing stories that have entertained me, gotten me to think deeper, taught me some new things.
There is so much new talent out there for us to enjoy. Reading and buying Indie provides a "win
win" for both authors and readers. I will continue to open my mind and receive some pleasant
surprises. (Susan Gervasi, Pallatine, Illinois)
