Activity 1.
Read the selection below “The Metaphor of the Mountain and the Teacher” and explain
what is a professional teacher?
The mountain is a huge creation that stands towering over all other structures
in the land. It stands majestic and impressive providing a soothing effect when
viewed from a distance. Its stature is a symbol of strength and stability.
Because of its elevated position, the mountain receives the first rays of the sun
at dawn. The radiance of the sun’s rays on the summit creates a beautiful panorama
to behold. It is a spectacular scene to lay the eyes on.
The mountain provides shelter to animals and other creatures living in it. At
times when the rain comes, the soil in the mountain eroded and water flows freely to
the land and rivers below. The rainwater from the mountain fertilizers the land at the
foot of the mountain. The plants grow and produce abundant harvest for the people
living in the area.

According to the selection “The Metaphor of the Mountain and the Teacher”, it
has a huge meaning and connection that will explain what professional teacher is?
Whenever how hard the challenges you might encounter you should take the risk to
reach your student to teach them and give the best education that they need.
Professional teacher will face a challenge and the challenge will be those student and
teaching for many years will be the mountain to climb and climbing the highest
mountain will be a greatest achievement and accomplishment she or he might ever
have. The sense of having done with something special. Mountain that professional
teachers need to climb, it has a metaphor meaning that how long and how did the
teacher track a way of his/ her profession the more she/he give and share knowledge
with his/her student who needs his/her help. “The mountain provides shelter to
animals and other creatures living in it” that sentences from the selection has
something want to tell to us on how professional teacher may give to the student and
also to the community where the school belong. Mountain represent the year or term
she/he might teach in that particular area and the animals and living creature that the
mountains provide their shelter is like what professional teacher provide to his/her
student through teaching and be part of the student life and success. Sometimes a lot of
problems they may encounter in their profession like downs, tears, and sadness but they
never stop but they continue to finish what they started because community will be
benefited when there’s a lot of students finish their study. “The plants grow and
produce abundant harvest for the people living in the area.” This phrase will serve as
the accomplishment and the result of professional teacher effort to climb the mountain
of their profession and the student finish already their study and they grow like a plant
and they are the representation on the abundant harvest and once they have their
profession also, they will help their community, their parents and all the people living
on it.

1. Watch “Discovering Your Life’s True Calling- Lou Sabrina Ongkiko at Youtube.
Based on the video that you just watched, what is our life’s true calling? How can you
apply that in your calling to teach?
Our life's true calling is always been to loved, according to teacher Sabrina, the speaker
in the video. She said that the call is not to teach, the call isn't our progression, because
the call is always been to loved, 'we are more determined to address our context'. Life's
true calling is the three things that teacher Sabrina said in the video. The first one is the
Purpose, second is Context, and lastly the Beliefs. Purpose, why are we here? What is our
purpose here? Context, what are the context that we want to address? And Beliefs, what
we believed in? If we love our profession, we can easily deal with it. As a future teacher
we can apply the things that teacher Sab said in the video, like she shares the things that
she received from her parents like the love and support. As a teacher we must know our
purpose. We are not just going to teach, but as a teacher we have to love the students and
know the stories behind them. And help students who are not that good in class, because
that's the role of being a teacher. Treat students well because it can reflect to the students,
if we treat them well, they are going to treat others well too. If the students are learning
from their teachers, the teachers as well are also learning from their students. Because
each students have an inspiring story that touch our hearts. 'If you are a teacher never stop
believing a person'. We are here as a future educator to share knowledge to our future
student to share those things we learn from now because sharing is caring. As a future
educator that’s my life true calling even though my first choice is to become a chef but
there’s one thing happen between my teacher way back when I was in high school, he
said you can be the next teacher in (AP) “Araling Panlipunan” without knowing my first
choice so the night of that day I keep on thinking about that and I realized that if this is
the way of God for me to track this path why not to go for it and then I always inspired
on the performance of that teacher I learned a lot. That was the time I decided to changes
my first choice. As a future educator one thing I can do to apply it on my teaching
profession is that when they have a dream like what I had when I was like them, as a
student I will let them learn and inspired but guide them and share information or lesson
that they need to keep it. Choose what they really love but first follow what is your
passion, pass it on the learnings and knowledge you gain.

3. Interview LET passers now teaching who did not go through the 4-year teacher
education course. They are graduates of other 4-year courses but not teacher education.
Ask them the following questions:

Ms. Abi Sacro- LET Passer

(documentation)
a. What are they experiencing in teaching?
Since the major subject I was assigned to for my Teaching profession does not fall under
my field of specialization, I have to re-learn the lessons first before delivering it to the class. That
way, I'd be able to impart knowledge in the best and simplest way possible.

b. Do they agree that a four-year teacher education course is a better preparation for the
teaching profession?
Yes. I do agree in a way. Taking a four-year course in teaching is better when you have to
teach in Basic Education, since one should be able to deliver not only the content of the
curriculum, but should also be knowledgeable in dealing with different learners--which can be
taken in the four-year teaching course. But, when it comes to teaching in the Higher Education,
where all other courses are offered for the future professionals, the field of specialization also
matters for those who teach

c. In 1991 the Congressional Commission to Review and Assess Philippine Education

(EDCOM) came out with the finding that the” quality of Philippine education is declining” and
that the teachers are at the heart of the problem.” The EDCOM discussed further that:
teachers were poorly trained here is low quality of students enrolled in teacher
training teaching is perceived as a poorly esteemed profession so it does not attract the best
as mandated in the Philippine Constitution that “teaching will attract and retain” its rightful
share of the best available talents through adequate remuneration and other
means of job satisfaction and fulfillment ( Article XIV, Section 5 (5).

What actions did the Philippine government do after the EDCOM Report?

To aid the government in its efforts to improve the state of education in the country, the Senate is pushing
for the revival of the Congressional Committee on Education (EDCOM).

Five senators, led by Sonny Angara, have filed Senate Joint Resolution No. 10 calling for the creation of the
EDCOM, which will be composed of five members each from the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The EDCOM will be tasked to review, assess and evaluate the formal, non-formal, informal and alternative learning
systems, including continuing systems of education at all levels.

"A lot has been done to improve the country's educational system over the years but it has become apparent that we
need to do more to put us at par with the rest of the world," Angara said.

"The results of the 2018 round of the Programme for International Student Assessment or PISA, which saw the
Philippines at the bottom or second to the last in the list of 79 countries on reading literacy, mathematics and science
literacy, was a wake up call, not only for the DepEd but to Congress as well. We need to act right away," Angara
added.

d. Read RA 9293, An Act amending Certain Sections of RA 7836 and answer the
questions: What provisions in RA 9293 contribute to ensure that teachers fielded are quality
teachers?
9293] AN ACT AMENDING CERTAIN SECS OF REPUBLIC ACT NUMBERED
SEVENTY-EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX (R.A. NO. 7836), OTHERWISE KNOWN
AS THE “PHILIPPINE TEACHERS PROFESSIONALIZATION ACT OF 1994” Be it enacted
by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in Congress assembled:
SECTION 1. Provisions in RA 9293 that contribute to ensure that teachers fielded are quality
teachers. Qualification requirements of Applicant-No applicant shall be admitted to take the
examination unless, on the date of filing of the application, he shall have complied with the
following requirements.
Give your insights on the following situations:
1. To be true to your vocation and mission as a teacher, you have to “have more”, do
more in order to be more” to your students and all others to whom you were sent. What
does “do more, have more in order to be more” mean?
Means as a teacher and as a person, we already have the capabilities to be a great teacher
someday, but we must take time to harness or develop those capabilities to reach the quality to
be a professional. But being a professional comes with a great responsibility, we must contribute
our life and efforts to our profession for the progress of the students to become “human”. That’s
our mission and we must accept this vocation. It is a great honor to find your purpose on living.

2. Some teacher education institutions have a “sending off” ceremony for student
teachers before education students go for practice teaching. What is the significance of
this ceremony?
These are great ideas to help you make your new student teacher feel as welcome as possible
at the beginning.
3. The Greatest Teacher, Jesus Christ spent much time to prepare his apostles before he
“sent” them for their mission to “go into the world baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” What is the equivalent of this
preparation in your life as a professional teacher?
All those who knows this text and obey and fulfill this great commission will be blessed
spiritually because it is one of God’s requirements for one to be approved as true Christians
because by doing this, we show our love for God and at the same time showing love to
our neighbors by giving them the opportunity to be part of fulfilling his divine will.
4. Here is an excerpt of the True Decalogue of Apolinario Mabini.
Third. Develop the special talents that God has given you, working and studying according to
your capabilities, never straying from the path of good and justice, in order to achieve your
own perfection, and by this means you will contribute to the progress of humanity: thus you
will the mission that God has given you in this life, and achieving this, you will have honour,
and having honour, you will be glorifying God. (Source: http://malacanang.gov.ph/8132-the-
true-decalogue-by apolinario-mabini/ Retrieved, June 22, 2018)
What missions has given to teachers according to The True Decalogue of Mabini?
From what I have understand at The True Decalogue of Mabini, the mission has God
given to the teachers is to “progress humanity”. Teachers are the greatest influencers on the
earth, they mold each individual’s behavior or perceptions. Being capable of influencing or
nurturing, it is their
responsibility to teach the students on how to they will progress in their mentality, physicality,
and
even Humanity.”
