INTRODUCTION
We live in a world filled with changes as generation passes by, some aims to
attract, to retain and to discard old and new cultures. In the age of internet and social
media, the Korean Entertainment Industry has become a global phenomenon through
shipping Korean Pop music and drama overseas. The trend is also known as Hallyu, a
term now widely used to refer to the popularity of Korean entertainment and culture
across Asia and other parts of the world (Korean Net, n. d.). Korean Entertainment
varies in different forms, these forms include pop, culture, music, TV dramas, and
movies (Roll, 2018). Korean dramas have been touching the teenagers’ personality
through physical, emotional, and mental state (Delos Reyes, Paner, & Rivera, 2017).
Many people, especially Filipinos, are big fans of K-dramas and K-pop (Arayata,
2018). The Philippines recorded the biggest growth rate in the number of hallyu or
Korean wave, dubs and members in Southeast Asia in 2018, according to the report
released in South Korea (Hicap, 2019). Since 2003, the influence of "Hallyu" has been
particularly significant in the production of telenovelas, the first success of the Korean
Wave in the Philippines, according to Dr. Crisanta Flores (Santamaria, 2012. The Hallyu
craze has swept the country and you can find local teenagers at local malls dressed in a
fashion that resemble their K-Pop Idols. And just like their music K-Pop idols are in
another world when it comes to fashion. Their outfits are flashy, quirky yet fashionable,
according to an article from Candy Magazine (Belonio, 2017). Delos Rayes, W., Paner
R., and Rivera, R. (2017) explained that teenagers become influenced by how Korean
Fashion is shown in K-dramas they watch. Filipinos also showed awareness of Korean
food and drinks such as kimchi, ginseng and soju, Korean brands such as Samsung, Kia
and LG and most knew of Taekwondo’s Korean origins (Yap, 2011).
The researchers aim to determine the influence of Korean entertainment among
the Grade 11 students of Saint Louis University Laboratory Senior High School (SLU-

SHS). The researchers would like to distinguish the negative and positive influences of
being hooked in Korean entertainment.
Ambassador of South Korea Han Dong-man considers the growing fondness of
Filipinos for Korean popular culture, known as hallyu or Korean wave, will help
strengthen the relationship of his country and the Philippines. “I would like to ask you
to continue [the] solid ties between the Philippines and Korea,” Han said during the
2019 K-pop Friendship Concert on March 7 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Aside from K-
pop, he observed that the local Korean wave has strongly influenced the lives of
Filipinos in the form of Korean “novelas,” food and cosmetics, among many others
(Ciriaco, 2019).
Korean Culture and trends as seen in Korean dramas have been invaded and
been deeply rooted in the Philippine Society today (Anon, 2018). With the surprising
generation of Koreans, Filipinos gain new sets of interests especially when it comes to
Korean entertainment. The researchers would like to know the extent of the influence
already made by Korean entertainment in the Philippines. It is significant for the
teenagers of this generation to understand how Korean entertainment may have
affected their perception and fascination in Filipino Culture.
In conducting this study, the researcher’s may encounter problems in
administering the survey and interviews regarding the time of the students, some of the
respondents may not answer the survey seriously and honestly, some may discontinue
answering. Moreover, some of the survey may not be retrieved properly. Furthermore,
the researchers hope that the conducted study would reach results in the researchers’
designated goal. (Semilla, C. and Soriano, P., 2017).

METHODOLOGY
This discusses the methods that have been used in the collection and analysis of
data to answer the research questions of the study. It explains the research design,
sampling techniques, and data collection methods used.
Qualitative Research method has been used in carrying out this research since
the main objective of the researchers was to come with an end product in the form of
showing the Influence of Korean Entertainment to Grade 11 Students of Saint Louis
University Laboratory Senior High School. It is used to gain an understanding of
underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides knowledge into the problem
or helps to develop ideas. Qualitative research is also used to uncover trends in thought
and opinions related into the problem.
For this study, the population from which the samples were derived consists of
the following groups of participants:

2|Page
a. Five (5) students each section of Grade 11 Community, specifically 105
students in total (both male and female).
b. Ten (10) randomly chose Grade 11 Students of Saint Louis University
Laboratory Senior High School for the interview (both male and female).

The evaluation has been carried out using three systems of data collection
techniques: survey, interview, and observation.
Survey
The researchers will be conducting a survey among Grade 11 students of Saint
Louis University Laboratory Senior High School in order to collect qualified data
regarding their patterns of consuming Korean Music and videos. The survey sampling
was purposive in order to specifically target the population of K-pop fans.
Interview
The researchers will be interviewing students to obtain detailed information
about personal feelings, perceptions and opinions on how Korean entertainment
influence them. It also allow more detailed questions to be asked that gives a high
response rate and usually open-ended questions so that in-depth information will be
collected.
Observation
The researchers will be observing some students about their ongoing behavior by
how Korean entertainment influence them, they will use all of their senses to examine
students in natural settings or naturally occurring situation.

To conduct a research about how Korean entertainment influence the Grade 11

students of Saint Louis University Laboratory Senior High School data has to be
collected from appropriate resources. The researchers will be making first a letter to ask
permission to advisers to conduct the survey during their time. In depth interviews will
be used. After which, the researchers will be conducting surveys within 3 days. The
survey contained 10 questions about the student’s preference which will determine if
they are influenced by Korean entertainment. It is distributed to 5 students each section
that is 105 students in total population. The researchers will be classifying the results
based on the gender of the students, as well as the as the five responses assigned:
Always. Often, Sometimes, Rarely and Never.
As far as data collection tools were concerned, the conduction of the research
involve the use of questionnaire, which was used as interview guide for the researcher.
Some questions were prepared, so as far the researcher to guide the interview towards

the satisfaction of research objectives, but additional questions were made encountered
during the interviews.
Some sample questions that were included in the interview were the following:
A. The economy of the Philippines is also a part of its culture, knowing this
do you think Korean Entertainment affects the Philippine's economy as a
whole?
B. Do you try to imitate Korean's singing, dancing, and handwriting? If so or
if not, why?
C. When did you start getting interested (to) with Korean Entertainment?
D. What makes you interested in this type of entertainment? Why?
E. Did this type of entertainment make you undergo lifestyle changes?

Content analysis was used to analyze data which was gathered from interviews,
surveys, and observations. Content analysis gives the ability of researchers to structure
the qualitative data collected in a way that satisfies the accomplishment of research
objectives.
