Chapter I

The Problem and it’s Background

Background of the Study

Filipino had been influenced by Korean Pop music not just by its music but also their

own culture, the way they act, the way they speak and etc..

Now a day you can hear music everywhere, you hear them in a market, at school, at

your neighbor but mostly you hear them from your phone you play them and listen to

music.

Music is the art of expressing ideas and emotion in it significant sound forms by

using the element of rhythm melody and harmony through voice, instruments or both.

Music plays a great role in our daily lives.

Those Filipinos who are into K-pop, at that point it implies a considerable measure.

From design, expressions, and social it impacts them by one means or another. There is no

official insight on what numbers of Filipinos are in to K-pop, the researchers could securely

say that they could be considered as a minority yet with immense social reach, particularly

on the web.

Like the K-Dramas, Filipinos are also into K-Pop or K-Pop Music. From first

generation idol groups such as Seo Taiji & The Boys, Sechs Kies, Turbo, S.E.S., Shinhwa,

Fin.K.L. in the 90’s to Epik High, TVXQ, Super Junior, BigBang, Brown Eyed Grils, Wonder
2

Girls, Girls Generation in the 2000s and Infinite, Sistar, ZE:A, EXO, AOA, BTS in 2010 to the

present and more new idol groups to debut, Filipinas just can’t stop loving them and are

always looking forward to their fan meetings and concerts.

Some of these groups are already in their 10th year or more since their debut in the

Korean entertainment industry. People who love and support them create fan groups for

their idols in Korean and around the world. Fans also have what they call in the K-Pop

world as “bias” or favorites. But different from Korean dramas that are dubbed, these K-

Pop songs are in Hangul or Korean Alphabet. So, why do many Filipinos love them even if

they do not understand a single word in the lyrics?

In an article from The Freeman (via PhilStar), writer Sonny Boy Temblor explained

why Filipinos are captivated by K-Pop music. Temblor said that K-Pop has developed a

distinct character of its own even though it contains pop music influences from the West. K-

Pop is also often presented with “catchy music, and dynamic choreography,” not to mention

its repetitive allure that makes it easier for Filipinos to follow and remember.

Apart from its upbeat tune that makes us bob our heads and shake our hips, K-Pop’s

choreography often leaves us in awe as singers’ dance while singing, hence, many K-Pop

concerts held in the Philippines are standing-room only.

Chapter II

Review of the Related Literature and Studies

Emotional

“No one is old enough for k-pop and k-drama and the love of Filipinos for Hallyn

Culture” will surely never end. No matter what happens Filipinos will always be one of the

ultimate K-Pop Hally’s fans in the world. However as talented Filipino artist involved land

for.

As what is always says Filipinos are not into only in k-dramas and k-pop but instead

they are go into Korean culture, there are acting to have interest in culture, from their work

and from. Their beliefs, Filipinos nowadays stand learning that and it seems they are

accepting it, although he know that we Filipinos are emotional and if we saw Korean

culture also are so emotional too, they can relate to each other, so there’s a reason to study

and learn it. It is okay to cope their culture but we should love also our own culture, it’s

because nowadays we didn’t appreciate our own culture because of K-Pop influences.

Psychological

“The rapid spread of K-pop in our country has made a great impact on our people.

More and more students in our school are being influenced by the groove and rhythm of K-

pop."
8

Nowadays a lot of teenagers are addicted to K-pop, K-drama and all things that have

connected in Korea. Many Filipino are acting like a Korean: the way they speak, like the way

they sing and etc. Just like they adopted the culture of the Korea and maybe K-pop music

have positive impact to the Filipino teenagers. The advantage are they become friendlier,

becomes more confident, becomes more open minded, learn how to budget their money

well. Inspired to do things that way help them in the future, learn how to appreciate music,

dance and people behaviour and becomes influenced to sing and dance. The disadvantages

are they're spending most of their money for K-pop things like albums, concert tickets and

etc. They becomes immature when it comes to their favorite K-pop idols, they become

defensive when it comes to their favorite idol. That is based on the observation of the

researcher. Imagine how K-pop culture influenced us. Not just imagine how K-pop culture

influenced us. Not just by their music but also their culture.

“The world has become border less and media and for activities are just the aspects

of globalization that brought about the influenced of the world. But also Filipino fans of K-

pop are not able to visit their favourite Korean stars but they satisfy themselves with the

linked pictures, videos, and activities of their idols”

As a fan of your idol you willing to do everything just to update with your idols and

even your same interest from the other country you will make a way just to update with

your idol. Just to know if they release new song, new movie and etc. As you that is the

impact of your idol to you, to your behaviour. And being die hard for your idol and

imitating your idol choreography. Their styles, their appearance and their behaviour while
9

they are performing and being a die hard for k-pop you will learn how to talk to their other

co-fan to will updates about your idols.

“It is interesting to note that more and more are becoming Koreans, although not by

its nationality but by taste and look.”

Always watching k-drama always listening K-pop because of that Filipinos adopt the

Korean culture, the way they act popularity of K-pop have in the Philippines. Because they

are attractive or how they dress u, how they sing and unique dances and most Filipino

teenager make K-pop as an inspiration in loving music and etc. They are influence by

Korean in terms of looks.

Social

The Korean popular music, or the Korean pop on simply K-pop is a musical genre

consisting of electronic hip-hop, Pop rock, and Rock band music organization in South

Korea. Hyhn (2011) defined K-pop as for Korean pop music that covers a wide variety of

contemporary music including pop, hiphop, and trendy degree pop, bubblegum pop, louse,

electro pop, and techno. Due to the big wave of success, K-pop became so popular not only

in South Korea but also to other parts of the world especially in the Philippines. Numerous

K-pop groups like shining, T minute, FT islands, super junior, Ukisos, best, Kim hyhm joong

and Kevin visited in Philippines K-pop conversation held in the Philippines international

convention center last December 10, 2009 (Alaibaler , 2011) as the old on the Korean

artist has their own groups, that the fame make group for talking about their idols, there

are some information about the artist etc. Meaning these groups only showing their love for

their idols.
10

Filipinos most teenagers do like koreans not only with their popular music and

artist but also the culture as heigoff(1994), studied. That koreans are actually and vaccially

homogeneous people. They have a common language and like the Chinese and the Japanese

there Mongolia descendants. Koreans are known as using chopsticks for solid foods rather

than spoon and fork. As here in the Philippines the main dish is adobo, in Korea the popular

dish is Kimchi that is considered as diet tropical dishes. Korean is not closely related/ any

other modern and lifting (Neigolf, 1994) truly that most Filipinos teenagers have their in

cellphone, mp3, pc, the songs of Korean it does matter to them if their pronunciation, of the

song is not correct, as long as they know the tune of it. Most Filipinos sang the Korean

songs without even know what is the meaning of it. Culture invasion.

This statement from Google showed how the Filipinos are like K-pop on Korean

popular music or Korean pop. For the K-pop band first time here in the Philippines there

are movethon thousands fans here in the Philippines at least this show how the Filipinos

idolized bands have a groul, so do K-pop fans K-pop makes Filipino fashionable and livelier

Filipinos idolized K-pop like is theme fan music, Korean in their language, so Filipinos sings

K-pop music, it is also well it look like they the one singing it but come don't know meaning

of it the song They just song it cause they like it.

“With over 800 million views on YouTube Gangnam style has become a cultural

sensation, but K-pop has been around longer than Psy and its influence has lent a hard in

elevating south Korea in the consciousness of Asia and the world, with effects that go well

beyond the entertainment industry. Culture is helping to holster the country’s soft power

and build its influence. It’s a success story that may offer important clues for china as seeks
11

to use holster to culture its own soft power and reminder of the haleyors days when hong

kong stars seemed destined for global fame.

Psy has topped the charts in Britain and been welcomed in new york by his fellow

countrymen, UN chief Bankimoon, who conceded with a grim that he was no longer the

world’s most famous Korean. Korean films are becoming more and more popular among

the main stream.”

Park Chan-Wooke’s hit old boy is getting a US remake next year. While television

shows are winning fans Unlikely corners of the world.

This says here that psy ( a Korean singer) became popular on YouTube (which

almost all of the people use) which influence the other country to notice south korea

elevating its consciousness in Asia and the world which boost their entertainment industry.

This is helping them to boost their country’s influence to other countries.

Korean music, Korean Films, Korean Dramas and being more and more popular as

the days goes by. South Korea is little private place or we can say it close so the first

connection is through music, films, and it’s been a good way to connect and how K-pop has

been around the world.

“Almost of K-pop fans all know how great it feels when someone outside of fandom

genuinely likes a K-pop song that they have introduced to them. Getting others into K-pop (

or at least into a song) is fulfilling because it’s not only validate the fact that K-pop is

awesome, but also gives you someone to spazz with. I love that fans are very particular

about converting people to the groups that they love. For example, I once told a huge EXO
12

fan on the seoul beats seam that I wanted to leaves a hint about EXO and that’s was going

online to do research.”

Based on article or google, K-pop fans love to shows K-pop music to others they like

to invite people to listen in K-pop music cause inviting people and seeing them listen happy

to K-pop makes them happy, it assume them that K-pop is awesome, and the main reason

why they are inviting is because they want someone to talk about their idol in K-pop

group/ K-pop music.

Being K-pop fan is being friendly but if insult their idols it will trigger them to insult

you and they will not forget that you insult their idol they will always think that you are

their enemy but it’s only minor you’ve still friends.

Almost K-pop fans all know how great it feels when someone outside of fandom

genuinely like a K-pop song. That they have introduced to them. Getting others into K-pop

(or at least into a song) is fulfilling because it not only validates the fact that K-pop is

awesome, but also gives you someone to spazzy with. I love that fans are very particular

about converting people to the groups that they have. For example, i once hold a huge EXO

fan or the seanbeats team that i wanted to leave a fant about EXO and that i was going

online to do research

Based on article in Google K-pop fans love to share K-pop music to others they like

to invite people in K-pop music cause inviting people and seeing their listen happily to K-

are inviting is because they want someone to talk about their idol in K-pop band/K-pop

music.
13

Being K-pop fan is being friendly but if you insult their idol because it trigger them

to insult you and they will not forget that you insulted their idol. They will always think you

as an enemy but it’s only minor; you’ve still friends about them.

Study Habits

Teen spend too much time watching music video, drama, searching information

about k-pop idols as a result. They lack of sleep, staying up late and sometimes skipping

meals, according to Hyhnaie in his blog (2016). In other words teens it’s because of K-pop

its influence them by hear them, they forget to their habitual activities such as to sleep and

to eat this two, plays important role of our part life especially students life, if the students

skip their meals particular their breakfast there’s a tendency that these students will not

participants well in their school activities impact they get dizzy.

If the students are not achieve atleast eight hours of sleeping they get tired fast as a

result they will sleep class hour.

In this statement also it states the negative effects of K-pop influence us. K-pop

greatly influences teens in bad and good way. Just what is stated above, in other words K-

pop music way influence the study habits of every individual students. And it way lead the

students to fail. Since students are have more much time. They are focus in K-pop and start

forgetting to their tasks in school and their homes. That way comes to students to fail

he/she avoid it.

Base in Donemy essay a website with the title of “K-pop addiction and its influences

to students academic”. They found out that due to the K-dramas that have been aired in the
14

Philippines T.V. the teenagers love the theme song of the particular movie. They starting to

love it, they are knowing who is the singer of that music and start idolizing then, among

other reason, Filipinos become more interested to k-pop, they’re started to idolized their

idols by means of what they doing or they do, singing what they sing, acting what they act

and impact Filipinos particular students are the one who really into K-pop addiction some

of other reason is growing technologies where social media really affect them “K-pop is no

longer a musical genre”.

Students use their free time to explore the work of their Korean idols, they browse

what is all about from their idols.

Since students have more free-time they are become wise, they grab the

opportunities to study. But for their academic’s but instead for their idols. They are

memorizing the song of their idol which it improves students memorization skills and their

reading comprehension. In Korean language and so say K-pop start killing us. We should

control this, it is similar to gaming addiction if we can’t control it as zoom as possible it will

ruin our lives.

Synthesis

Based from the data that is gathered by the researchers of this study entitled the

Impact of K-pop music in the Academic Performance of Senior High School, they have

different point of view regarding the influence of K-pop music.

K-pop has a good and bad effect on a person in some way. That some way is the

following; K-pop addiction is just like a game addiction if the students too into K-pop, The
15

moment they forget to their task. It may ruin their live, Due to large influence of K-pop

people they have create a community where everyone can join and interact. Each other can

build a bondings.
