Music Can Heal Mental Wounds but Only in the Right Hands By Eva Dorothee Schmid
Human beings have known about the healing properties of music since Biblical times – according to the
Old Testament for example.  David soothed King Saul’s aching brow by reaching for his harp.
There are also many references to the healing potential of music in texts left behind by the ancient
Greeks.
The same properties are not put to good use in the modern field of music therapy.  Music therapy is
psychotherapeutic procedure which does not compete with traditional medicine but rather tries to
complement it.
Music arouses emotion, soothes, comforts and can lead to changes in behavior.  It can also encourage
the healing process, increase a person’s ability to tolerate pain and help them overcome their fears.
All of this can result in changes in the body’s chemistry. Studies show that the right sort of music causes
the body to release an increased amount of so-called endorphins with the results that the person
becomes less sensitive to pain and feels much better.

What is the praying mantis? Although it is really no more than an insect, it is the only insect that can turn
its head and look over its shoulder like a man, wash its face like a cat, and bend over and drink water like
a horse. Yet, this unusual insect is considered to be a valuable garden helper.
One naturalist called the mantis “the dinosaur of the garden.” It has a slender, almost prehistoric-looking
body, with a weirdly moving head and huge black eyes. The greater slice-like front legs stay raised   as in
a praying position. They move with lightning speed to catch their prey. Even baby mantises remain poised
to strike or grab at anything within their reach.
Although it is one of the most rapacious insects in the garden, the praying mantis is absolutely harmless
to man. In fact, because of the insatiable appetite for the hundreds of harmful insects that invade gardens
every year, the praying mantis is quite valuable.
