Define
1. (Kindly do the correction in this definition)
b) Mass number (A): Mass number (A) is equal to the sum of the
number of protons (p) and neutrons (n) in the nucleus.
Atomic mass Number or mass number = Number of Protons +
Number of Neutrons
A=p+n
Example- A lithium atom contains 3 Protons and 4 neutrons.
Its atomic mass number A = 3+4 = 7
(Include the word number after atomic mass-Typo error-
Atomic mass and mass number are 2 different terms)
Home work:
1. A sulphur atom contains 16 Protons and 16 neutrons.
Find its atomic number and mass number. ( A= Z+ n)
(Z=p)
Solution- Atomic number (Z) = No of protons = 16 (Given)
Mass Number = No of protons + No of neutrons = 16
+16= 32
2. Write the atomic number and mass number of the first
10 elements with the following columns element, symbol,
atomic number, No of protons (Z), Mass number (A).
Solution-
