1. Determine the shearing strength of the beam shown 3 ft from the supports using the
approximate method allowed by the ACI Code. Determine the required spacing of #3
stirrups at the same section if fc’ = 5000 psi, fpu = 250,000 psi, fy for stirrups = 50,000 psi, and
fse = 200,000 psi.
2. The cross section of the simply supported pretensioned concrete beam has a width of 300 mm and a total depth of
500 mm. The beam has straight cables with initial prestress of 964 kN and the final prestress after losses of 624 kN. The
concrete is uncracked, with a creep coefficient of 2.0 and the modulus of elasticity is 27,646 MPa. The straight cables are
placed 400 mm below the topmost fiber of the beam. The superimposed live and dead load (in excess of beam weight)
are 12 kN/m and 8 kN/m respectively. Assume concrete weighs 23.5 kN/m3, span of beam =9 m.
a. Determine the concrete stress at the top of the beam at midspan after losses of stress.
b. Determine the centerline deflection of the beam immediately after the cables are cut.
