How and where to install

• An Ideal installation will be an open field with no obstacles and clear line of
sight to targets, however installation sites are not always ideal.

• When choosing a mounting location for the SR Sensor, the goal is to

optimize detection while minimizing the potential for false targets.

• It is highly recommended to conduct a site survey to identify optimal

position prior to installation.

• A site survey provides an opportunity to confirm coverage and mounting

location with the customer prior to installing poles, power, and
Installation Guidelines

How and where to install

1. Make sure the area is suitable for radars:

Ensure that the protected area is wide enough. Otherwise the radar has no relative advantage:

Don’ts

Detecting 2-3 meters inside/out a fence line – No

Multiple Buildings/Thick Foliage with no line of sight over 50-100 meters – No

A lot of traffic (busy road, crowded areas) – No

2. Line of Sight:

When choosing mounting location ensure best line of site

to the entire protected area.

Radars do not penetrate physical barriers such as walls,

trees, poles and fences.

3. Installation Height & Tilt:
Assuming good line of site, following are the recommended heights per model:

Note Usually line of site restrictions lead to higher installation heights, and in general the higher
the better.

When an installation height is much higher than the

observed terrain level, the recommended best
practice is to tilt down the radar such that it is
pointing at the maximum desired range of
detection - as illustrated.

4. Tangent vs Radial Movement:
Locate and map potential threat
penetration vectors. As much as possible,
position the radar such that threats move
radially towards it to improve detection
performance. Otherwise, expect reduced
range and effectivity when handling
tangent moving threats in high-clutter
environments.

5. Avoid Clutter Sources:

“Clutter” in terms of radar is any object that might generate background noise or detections
that are not real threats.

Major clutter sources are:

• Large unkempt vegetation such as large dense bushes or weeds, especially in windy regions

• Busy roads with vehicle/human traffic

If the radar has line of sight to such clutter sources, even partially, they might affect detection
performance even elsewhere within the coverage area.

6. Metal Objects:
Avoid placing the radar in the vicinity of large
static metallic objects: static objects such as
large poles, fences, rails, etc,. within the close
vicinity of the radar might result in inaccurate
target positions or “ghost” targets created by
real targets

Avoid placing the radar in the vicinity of large

moving metallic objects: trucks, cars, forklifts
etc, as these might generate too much
reflected signal and thus blind the radar. In
addition, such large “targets” might even be
picked-up outside the coverage of the radar
and generate nuisance alarms within the
coverage zone.

How and where to install - Summary

• The protected area is well defined and suitable for radars (wide enough).

• There is an obstacle free, clear line of sight to all areas of interest. Mounting height conforms with
recommendations per desired range and model.
• Approach vectors were taken into account when considering maximum detection range. Reduced
range is expected for tangent targets.
• Mitigate clutter – ensure that sensor coverage areas include as little clutter generators as possible,
avoid busy roads, dense vegetation, etc.
• Avoid large metallic objects in the vicinity of the sensor. Ensure that there are no large poles/high
fences/mounting brackets directly in front of it, and it is located away from large vehicle traffic
areas.

• PTZ cameras (if used for visual verification of targets) have clear line of sight to the entire

protected area.

Bracket Selection

• Wall • Corner

• Pole • Universal
Installation Guidelines

Mount and Bracket Selection - Notes

• All Brackets do not include accessories (bolts, screw anchors, mounting
straps) for connecting the bracket to the pole/wall itself.

• Never over-tighten the screws connecting the bracket to the radar itself.
Use spring washers and minimum torque required to securing; squeeze
the spring washers (roughly 0.7NM depending on equipment used).
Refer to the bracket user manual for full mounting instructions

• All brackets except the “Universal Bracket” use the same allen-head
screws as the radar for adjusting tilt.

Cables and Electrical Interface

• Magos offers proprietary cables at lengths of 15m and 2.5m. Use the shortest cable required.
If a different length is required, custom made cables can be manufactured with MOQ and
slightly longer lead time. Do not custom make cables without approval from Magos.
• Typically, cables should run from the radar to a nearby connection box (outdoor grade where
required).
• The interface is POE (Ethernet and 48VDC). Use recommended POE equipment and surge
protection. Consult with Magos support for recommended equipment.
• Keep radar connector closed at all times when not connected to the cable, as the radars are
not sealed when connector is open.

Final Notes
• When unsure about radar position (especially in first-time designs and setups)
– always consult with Magos support team – its free ☺

• If mounting several sensors or other equipment on the same pole as the radar
– make sure the radar’s line of sight (practically everything in front of it) is
clear of obstacles, cameras etc.

• Radar should be installed below the lightening protection rods

• If using wireless communication equipment – consult with Magos Support

team in frequency and channel selection. Make sure to point transmitting
antennas away from the radar.
