Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

An umbrella or sunshade may be a folding cover supported by picket or metal ribs,

that is typically mounted on a picket, metal, or plastic pole. It’s designed to shield an

individual against rain or daylight. The umbrella as we all know it these days are primarily a

tool to keep individuals dry in rain or snow. Its original purpose was to shade an individual

from the sun (umbra is Latin for "shade"), a perform that's still mirrored within the

word "parasol," (derived from the French Parare," to shield" and sol, "sun") a smaller-sized

umbrella used primarily by the girls. There's associate abundance of references to the usage

of parasols and umbrellas in art and literature from ancient continent, Asia, and Europe. As

an example, the Egyptian immortal nut protected the planet sort of a big umbrella only her

toes and fingertips touched the ground, thus protective humanity from the unsafe components

of the heavens. Though the Egyptians, just like the Mesopotamians, used palm fronds and

feathers in their umbrellas, they conjointly introduced stretched papyrus as a fabric for the

cover, thereby making a tool that's recognizably associate umbrella by fashionable standards.

About 2,000 years ago, the sun-umbrella was a standard accent for rich Greek and

Roman girls. It had become thus known as a "woman's object" that men World Health

Organization used it were subjected to ridicule. Within the 1st century A. D., Roman girls

took to oiling their paper sunshades, by choice making umbrellas to be used within the rain.

There's even a recorded suit qualitative analysis from the primary century over whether girls

ought to be allowed to open umbrellas throughout events command in amphitheatres. Though

umbrellas blocked the vision of these behind them, the ladies win their case.

Materials used to make an umbrella have, of course, improved through the years. One

amongst the foremost necessary innovations came within the early century, once Samuel Fox

planned the thought of exploitation "U" formed steel rods for the ribs and stretchers to form a

lighter, stronger frame. Previously, English umbrellas had been made of either cane or

baleen, whalebone umbrellas particularly were large and awkward. Rounded ribs and

stretchers square measure often seen these days solely on parasols and area umbrellas.

Advancements in metal-producing technology have created rounded metal ribs and stretchers

a lot of possible, however, and a few makers manufacture umbrellas with these

parts. Fashionable rain umbrellas square measure created with materials (nylon, most

commonly) which will face up to a wetting rain, dry quickly, fold simply, and square measure

on the market in a very type of colours and styles. Modern umbrellas square measure created

by a hand-assembly method that apart from a couple of essential areas. They are often done

by semi-skilled workers and selections of materials and internal control occur throughout the

producing method. Though a superior umbrella needn't be pricey, nearly each buying

call impacts directly upon the standard of the ultimate product. Collapsible rain umbrellas

that telescope into a length of a few foot square measure the foremost recent innovations in

umbrellas. Although automatically a lot of difficult than stick umbrellas, they share identical

basic technology. Among the variations between a stick umbrella and a folding umbrella

is that the folding uses a 2 piece shaft that telescopes into itself, and an additional set of

runners on the highest of the umbrella. This section can concentrate on the manufacture of a

stick umbrella.

Brief History

As the human race moves out of Stone Age, advances in technology and culture have

helped our ancestors to develop their lifestyle, change their climate and grow. One of the

instruments that made it easier and more convenient for them to survive was the umbrella and

parasol, which gradually managed to grow from exclusive use by wealthy and royalty to one

of the most widely used items in the modern world. Over the years, umbrellas have received

countless updates as one of the most successful ways to protect the individual from sun and

rain. The first documented use of parasol shielding the sun comes from Ancient Egypt, more

than 3500 years ago. Egyptian parasols, initially used with basic arrangements of palm leaves

attached to a stick, gradually developed into an item used by nobles, religious leaders and

royalty. During those days, umbrellas were seen as a symbol of running and nobles promoted

a pale skin culture that was unaffected by heat. Many hieroglyphic paintings found in ancient

ruins of Egypt portrayed the life of royalty and gods, all of which had parasols over their

heads. The neighbouring Assyrian kingdom practiced tradition, where only the kings had the

right to be protected with elaborately made parasols.

Egyptians and Assyrians never saw a need to waterproof their parasols and build

umbrellas because of the desert-like climate of northern Africa and Middle East.

Nevertheless, this innovation occurred in China in the 11th century BC, where the aristocracy

and royalty started to use first silk and waterproof umbrellas. As a symbol of dominance

influential people held multi-tiered umbrellas, with four-thirds of very intricate parasol

shielding the Chinese Emperor himself. Similar practice spread throughout the region and the

Siamese and Burmese rulers used eight to 24-layer parasols.

Review of Related Literature

Introduction

In this chapter, it consists of analysis of local and foreign literature and describing the

inquiry of the researcher.

This chapter is one of the pillars of this study.

Local Literature

Umbrella is the common use here in the Philippines since 1860’s. To look backward

in that time, umbrellas are too expensive, only the average people can afford the umbrella.

Nowadays, technologies have been invented and too many people admire these inventions.

Individuals can now buy an affordable and cheaper umbrella’s that can be use and can carry

while there in outdoor.

An umbrella is like a good friend of an individual. It is always there when people

need these, and while waiting in the wings when you don’t. It stays with you through rain or

shine, and as well protecting people from the sun’s harmful rays.

In the study of Alexa Montecillo (2019), In Philippines the most fashion to both

woman’s and man’s accessories are Umbrella. She stated that Umbrella is one of the most

useful tools in both summer and rainy season’s days. Individuals usually take a look first for

the appearance and quality of the product. Umbrella is made of nylon and hood that is not

get wet quickly and also a windproof.

However, the trendy umbrella is for sun protection only, providing minimal coverage

against rains. The least complex and easiest way get the plastic bag and place it over head.

Since not everyone has a plastic bag before going out, there’s always a fishing hat as a

substitute. One of the Filipino knows how to make this big brim hat from different types of

materials. The common fishing hat is made from wool felt or tweed cloth, this hat is

commonly used of the farmers or fishermen as a protection from the rain. It is naturally

waterproof.

Umbrella is the most convenient and affordable item that can be bought on the market

for everyday use. A lightweight that can be easily to use, designed to be comfortable and a

handle that best fit to your hand. They are very cheap and easily transportable from place to

place.

Fan is commonly used of the individuals that blow cool air to reduce feeling of heat

and irritability. Fan is one of the prioritized products of an elderly to eliminate stress and

extremely heat and helps to avoid related illnesses.

According to Dr. Ollie Jay (2015), fan is the only devices that can make individuals

feel cool and can afford to buy. Fan can be made of wood or metals and light-weighted

equipment that can be easily to bring or to move. Fan usually eligible to use since it is not

quite expensive in electricity unlike air conditions.

Philippines are one of the tropical and also a climate change country. Daily life and

well-being was threatened for people living on the poverty line in general, but also for the

country as a whole.

According to Dr. Bligard, (2019), Sunlight has a benefit to human bodies. One of the

highest benefits is the serotonin in the brain, which associates to a good mood and make

people feel better and increases body energy. Exposure from the sun can make people relieve

stress like walking the dog and do some exercise outdoor. It can also improve sleep which

melatonin has an ability to inform human body when it’s time to sleep. Vitamin D also came

from the sun, which maintains the health of human bones.

Some people are not aware of the related-illness from the sun’s heat. Individuals may

experience a heat stroke which is difficult from us. You may experience this kind of disease

if you will not discipline yourself to drink an 8 of glass of water and take a bath every day to

reduce heat in our body.

The health of individuals is the most important since we can’t do anything if our

body is not functioning well. Also, body is the biggest help in our daily lives to live happily

and energetic. Most of the time we end up being sick causes the heat and the cold weather. It

can decrease the immune system of the individuals.

The Philippines are experiencing summer months, stifling rain, high temperature, and

long term exposure to sun all present to your wellbeing. Several people suffered from heat

exhaustion and heat stroke on particularly warm days. Heatstroke suffering throbbing

headache, no sweating, rapid, strong pulse and loss of consciousness while the heat

exhaustion suffering faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool pale, rapid, weak pulse and

muscle cramps.

Dehydration is one of the causes of sun exposure, some of which have different

symptoms such as dry mouth, increased fatigue, nausea and dizziness, yellow urination, and

tiredness.

Some people protect their skin against the sun's heat. Ultra-violet radiation can affect

people's health. Some of the ultraviolet radiation related illness is; skin cancer, skin damage,

eye damage, and immune suppression. Sunburns is the most common disease that individual

get too much exposure from the sun. The best way to protect you from heat-related disease is

to use heat control and drink water protectively.

According to Sharon Mammoser (2015), Rain has a positive effect to individuals.

Rainy days can give a mystical quality in an area. A fog, a white backdrop that sometimes

fell on the ground, rain can as well relieve the emotional pain of individuals, it undergo to a

silence and sounds of the raindrops. Usually, after raining, there’s a rainbow with a beautiful

colors that can be seen in the sky. As well, it can be symbolized to a new brighter day.

On the other hand, Emily Beach (2015) says, rainy weather has an impact on mood

and can lead to unable to do outdoor activities. When raining or in a cold weather, it may

cause us to have cold or end up individuals fall to ill. To protect our body people uses things

like umbrella and sweater on a cold weather. Rain can make people sick and unable to do

things. Umbrella is the most important thing that individual can use to protect them from any

kind of illnesses.

Philippines are one of the countries that usually use technologies to make things easy

and comfortable. In the study of Porto Biomedical Journal (2017), Comfort came from

Latin word “confortare” which means “becomes strong, comfort or encourage:. Comfort

ability is one of the important foundations in health and as well in the environment. For

example, while the sun is rise, an individual is walking along the street. Even they use a heat

protection like hat, umbrella or other alternatives, they still feel uncomfortable, and irritable.

An anti-theft program is any tool or process that is used to avoid or detect

unauthorized possession of valuable items. Theft is one of the most prevalent and oldest

habits in crime. Anti-theft devices have evolved from the development of the first lock and

key to the introduction of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags and biometric

authentication to balance the introduction of new technologies to society and the subsequent

theft by others.

Anti-theft bag is one of the examples of using anti-theft process. Anti-theft bag is a

secured, built-in purse, backpack or wallet. It is designed to help discourage you from

becoming a fraud victim at home or at school. These can also be called theft proof bags or

evidence slash bags.

Anti-theft tools or process has a safety measures like items with limited features can

often be disabled in order to prevent the device from being used in case it is stolen. Disabling

the anti-theft device is usually done by at any point of use allowing the owner to be known.

Digital or other methods (digital keys, numerical codes, complex passwords, biometric

identification) may be used to identify. This can work even retrospectively: with a phone call

to the issuing bank, the incentive to steal can be invalidated as a stolen credit card.

Foreign Literature

A word "Umbros" came from Latin that describes shade, and a common known as

umbrella. Umbrella first spread in Europe in mid-18th century and known as a female fashion

accessory. Englishman Jonas Hanway, he is the first man who carried umbrella in public

and at that time, the male group of England was influenced afterwards the whole world.

China is one of the best known countries that made modern umbrellas. There’s a city in

China called Shangyu, which has a thousand of factories making umbrella. From a French

President named Nicolas Sarkozy, he uses umbrellas for his security purposes. [ CITATION

Luc15 \l 1033 ]

According to the study of Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (1938), Chamberlain’s

umbrella is one of the most easily to produced and reproduced by political emblem of late

1938 – 9. It is been represented in media with a wide range of context and visual forms and

as well represented as an accessories, adornments, novelties, souvenirs, and edible delicacies.

16

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Countries like Britain and France says that umbrella is a diplomatic engagement and they

knew that it is a shelter, protection originally against both of sun and rain.

In the study of Dylan Loh (2016), He highlighted the Hong Kong’s Umbrella

Revolution. It was began in September 2014 and ended in mid-December at the same year

with students and youths that occupied and bring traffics in the areas of Central, Admiralty,

Causeway Bay and Mong Kok. They found out that the Umbrella Revolution is a unique case

study of three main factors: Not purely domestic protest as it is a Special Administrative

Region (SAR), has a big amount of international media attention, and presented the Hong

Kong as a logical site in understanding China politics.

According to the study of Xin Liu and Michael Y. Hu (2011), they examined the

characteristics and the price premium depends on the brands of an umbrella. The found out

that average of the subjects are willing to pay 9.45 percent of the premium price for a branded

product with the attribute-compatibility.

In the study of Domenico Dentoni and Hamish Gow (2009), they explore how an

organizations that can collaborate a horizontal strategic alliance to expand the products to

international markets under the brands of umbrella. They use three theories that was been

established in the fields of agricultural economics, marketing and strategic management.

They use the grounded theory to recognize the method, analyse and evaluate the complex

dynamic issues in an organization.

On the other hand, Martin Peitz and Hendrick Hakenes (2004), studied the

branding of umbrella and provision of quality. They found out that if the products under the

same brand name; consumer will compare the quality and will change their beliefs in the

performance of the said products. They also find that umbrella was survives in asymmetric

17
University of Perpetual Help System – Jonelta
San Gabriel, General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite 18
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
markets and even in unprofitable products that can be used to stabilized the brands of an

umbrella.

On the study of Alexandra Harris (2017), he discovered that Japanese yokai, or what

they called monstrous spirits, the kasa-obake or named as the umbrella ghost is one of the

most prominent forms of apparition. She also found out that the Japanese paper parasol is

usually known as a protection against sun than rain, but it can be beautiful in both guises,

symbolically powerful and malign. Marione Rankine’s tour through the cultures of umbrellas

suggests how widely this product apparently simple accessory was been regarded with

reverence, superstition, and fascination. Thomas Coryat’s returned to England with news of

the Italian sunshade which of sky gods, a story of ancient ceremonial usage. These was been

much retold and refined since William Sangster, he is a proprietor of the Sangster’s

Umbrellas in London that was published his triumphal survey Umbrellas and Their History

in 1855.

Awareness is one of the most important factors that individuals must remember. Since

we do not know if what time or day the climate will change. Sometimes, individual don’t

expect that a rain will fell into the ground. That’s why individuals must be ready to bring the

stuffs that may protect them in case of any emergencies.

In according to health, people must aware of the related illnesses that they might catch

in a climate change. It might end up in flu, colds or other illness that may get in a cold

weather, high-fever, sunburns, sore-eyes or else fell to an infected diseases in a sunny

weathers.

According to the International Statistics on Crime and Criminal Justice, Robbery is a

property crime involving violence or abuse threat. Robbery included violent muggings,

snatching bags, and theft. The metadata responses included crime scene details (e.g. banks,

post offices, businesses, roads, etc.).

Nowadays, Anti-Theft System was developing. Anti-Theft is avoided in normal

circumstances simply by enforcing and culturally embracing property law. Physical labelling

(license plates, name tags) is often used to show the best anti-theft product ownership. When

simple owner recognition is not feasible and people may be inclined to take ownership of

objects for their own benefit at the expense of the original owner when there is a lack of

social observance. Motive and opportunity are two factors that enable theft to take place.

Because theft motives are varied and complex and are generally not within the victim's

control, most theft prevention methods are based on reducing theft opportunities.

One of the examples is Intelligent Anti-Theft and Tracking System for Automobiles.

According to Montaser N. Ramadan, Mohammad A. Al-Khedher, Senior Member,

IACSIT,and Sharaf A. Al-Kheder, Using an embedded network with a Global Positioning

Network (GPS) and a Global Mobile System (GSM), an effective automotive security system

is introduced for anti-theft. The customer communicates with vehicles through this program

and uses Google Earth to assess their current position and status. The user can monitor the

location on Google Earth of targeted vehicles. Using GPS locator, the target current location

is determined and sent via Short Message Service (SMS) via GSM networks to a GSM

modem connected to a PC or laptop, along with various parameters received by the data port

of the vehicle. Using a discrete Kalman filter, the GPS coordinates are corrected. The

attempt to run it by blocking the gas feeding line. This device is very safe and efficient to

Gap of the Study

The past literatures shown importance in the present study. The proponents have

accumulated bits of knowledge about the investigation they are moving in. The literatures

from the past study of umbrellas are well on the way to be alike.

Umbrella is the most convenient and affordable item that can be bought on the market

for everyday use. They are very cheap and easily transportable from place to place. In the

past literature, umbrella is used easily by handling it one hand only and it has a fast button

system for auto open and close feature. It’s lightweight and always ready travel umbrella for

men and woman. People can keep it anywhere but there are the possibilities that it can be

easily lost when you misplace it somewhere. Be that as it may, through the methodologies,

design and standards have been embraced and utilized in the past studies including the

utilization of a normal umbrella feature.

There are existing studies about the advantages of normal umbrella to our health, for

example, that it helps to reduce on exposing our body in a hot temperature. On the past

studies it not only protects us from the sun but also it protects us in storm and rain. It also

gives us a good feeling while using it. It will never hurt your hand because it has black gum

handle and withstands winds.

The foreign and local literature started the interest of the proponents to develop the

existing umbrella that is commonly used by the civilians. We proposed a developed umbrella

that focused on anti-theft feature with a combination of portable fan that has battery operated.

It also features the anti-UV canopy of the umbrella that prevents the fabric of the umbrella

from leaking and too much expose in heat from the sun. The proponents chose to produce

“Brella-mazing” that will make the company manufacture an enhanced and innovative

umbrella.

Research Design and Methodology

Introduction

Methodology involves a brief description of the research design to be used including

the justification why it is the best method for the study. This chapter covers a comprehensive

description of Methodology which includes research design, population level, sample size,

and sampling technique/s used in the study as well as instrumentation, research, procedure

and complete statistical analysis of the data gathered.

Research Design

22

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Research design refers to a scheme or plan of how the research will be conducted. The

researchers used the descriptive design and applied using online survey and questionnaires.

The survey was conducted by providing structured questionnaires to a number of identified

respondents from the collages inside the University. The participants who were asked to

evaluate the types of umbrella during the survey were randomly selected from identified

respondents. The online survey was aided using forwarding to those people who’s always

more time on internet. Moreover, some questionnaires were directly given to randomly

respondents, which will server us key information on how will we the researchers improve

more our product offerings to our target consumers.

Source of Data

The information will be presented by the researchers from the various sources:

Primary Data

The data gathered from the survey and questionnaire that will give an interview to the

prospective target audience about the product being studied.

Secondary Data

The data collected from the information database, books and other alternative

references are used in evaluating the current study in the same region.

Sampling Technique

23

The proponents of the study used a non-random sampling technique to determine

which place Brella-mazing will be most likely to sell by determining the highest sample size

and percentage of each population.

Statistical Treatment of Data

1. Slovin’s Formula – is used to calculate the suitable sample size of a population.

N

Flow Process Chart

Flow charts are one of the most important tools that are being used in improving

certain processes. By having this type of illustration, they help people to understand different

elements and recognize the relationship of various steps.

The flow process chart is a representation of steps in a process or a system that shows

the sequencing of steps in order to produce an output. It used symbols that represents the type

of action being taken.

Flow Diagram

Flow Diagram is a graphical analysis of the actual route or flow of individuals, object

s, documents, vehicles, or contact relevant to a process. Also, the word flow diagram is used

as a synonym for flowchart and also as a flowchart counterpart.

It is a common term for a system diagram that represents a flow or set of dynamic

relationships. Flow diagrams are used to organize and coordinate a complicated system, or to

show the basic structure and relationship of the components.

Time and Motion Study

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Improving productivity often involves reducing the movement and the time wasted.

Roughly all human effort is about motion and movement, other than thinking time. The time

it takes is very significant, since all movement takes time.

Time and motion study is the examination of the time spent in the various processes

of a worker or sequence of jobs in the analysis of industrial efficiency. Such experiments

came to be implemented on a wide scale as a means of improving working processes by

separating a job's various operations into observable components. These analyzes are, in

effect, used as aids in standardizing the job and in testing the performance of people and

equipment and the manner in which they were mixed.

Systematic Layout Planning/Activity Relationship Diagram

Layout is the most essential component of facility planning at many plants and

storage facilities. The layout affects the use of space, the handling of materials and is widely

acclaimed on work process times. The layout defines the facility's versatility and adjustability

in the response to changes in the product line and business goal.

Systematic layout planning (SLP) is a technique used to organize a place of work in a

plant by positioning two areas close to one another with high volume and rational

relationships. The process allows for the easiest product movement at the lowest cost and the

least amount of handling in manufacturing the product.

services are related with the sellers that wants to exchange their goods or services for money,

this simply means, market exists when there is a purchase and sell decisions by the two

different parties. A market is also the marketing and selling of products and services,

including market research, advertising and promoting.

This chapter highlights the discrete modes of marketing strategies. This includes the

price, product, promotion and market place and what its significance to the market.

Moreover, this chapter portrays the goal descriptions, type of service, and promotional

schemes to envision the given strategies to the proponents’ target markets.

Management theories area unit the arrangement of general rules that direct the

equivalent. It tends to however managers and supervisors establish with their organizations

within the data of its goals, the usage of compelling intends to urge the goals achieved and

the way to encourage employees to perform to the foremost astounding normal.

The proponents can adopt the executive management theory of Henri Fayol as a

management variety of the planned business. Body management theory endeavours to find a

sane technique to structure associate structure normal. The idea typically needs a formalized

body structure, associate clear division of labour, and delegation of power and authority to

executives important to their territories of duties. Fayol gave fourteen principles of general

management to direct the managers World Health Organization in his time didn’t utilize a

scientific approach of management. His theory depends on however the management need to

collaborate with the employees. It’s astonishingly complete as associate approach to manage

the management techniques. It’s likewise the foremost utilised in lightweight of the very fact

that it's been incontestable to figure. Its leverage is being intensive because it covers just

about something one may have to try and do in an exceedingly management position to

ensure accomplishment. The disadvantage to the idea is that it's thus far captivated with folks.

The proponents selected body management theory of Henri Fayol as a result of its

thought of applicable and reliable to use in managing the personnel in any organization.

planned business required to advance as Fayol distributed his fourteen points. Thoughts that

created managers stop at that time are acknowledged while not even batting a watch these

days. Keeping employees educated wherever they continue to be in associate degree
