Male Genital System

The male genital system subsection includes procedures on the penis, testis,
epididymis, tunica
vaginalis, vas deferens, spermatic cord, seminal vesicles, and prostate. Figure
4.24 displays
these structures.

Code assignment in the male genital subsection is determined by approach, such as

incision, destruction, excision, or introduction. The reason the surgery is being
performed
also may affect code selection. For example, an orchiectomy (removal of testi )
performed
because of a testicular tumor (54530-54535) is coded differently from an
orchiectomy per
formed prophylactically to prevent the relea e of hormones that may promote tumor
metas
tasis (54520).

The coder is reminded to assign 69990 when the operating microscope is used, but
not
mentioned in the procedure code descriptors. Moreover, the coder should note the
ranges
of codes available in the CPT code book for laparoscopic procedures. It is
important to
review these code , which are specific to the testes (54690-54699) and the
spermatic cord
(55550-55559).
