Female Genital System and Maternity Care

and Delivery

The female genital system subsection includes procedures on the vulva, perineum and
introitus,
vagina, cervix, uterus, oviducts, ovaries, and in vitro fertilization. Figure 4.25
shows the organs
of the female genital system.

The procedures in the female genital system subsection are performed on women who
are
not pregnant. To code procedures in the female genital system accurately, the coder
often must
know the patient's diagnosis as well as the description of the procedure performed.

Some female genital procedures are referenced to other subsections. For example,
open
destruction of endometriomas is coded to the digestive subsection. All laparoscopic
procedures
and nonobstetrical dilatation and curettage procedure code are located in thi
subsection.
Biopsies of genital Ie ions are coded in this section but excision of lesions, both
benign and
malignant, are coded in the integumentary system.

Many of the procedures in this section are performed in procedure rooms within the
office
suite using regional anesthesia. Regional anesthesia is not part of the surgical
package and
should be reported separately when performed and documented. A common regional
anes
the ia is code 64435, Injection, anesthetic agent, paracervical (uterine) nerve. If
the regional
ane the ia is performed by the same physician, modifier -47 should be added to the
surgical
procedure code (CPT Assistant July 2003, 15).
