UNDERSTANDING

SELF

APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT-1

In your own words, state what “self” is for each of the Philosophers enumerated below. After

doing so, explain how your concept of “self” is compatible with how they conceived of the

“self.”

1. SOCRATES - “The true task of the philosopher is to know oneself.”

An example is when I remember my value. I am constantly asking myself, "What are the

reasons why I am worthy as a person?". I reflect on myself. And it reminds me of,

because I deserve respect, and I have respect for myself. I also understand the importance

of my personal space, time, and life. And I have an inner peace that sustains me

throughout the day.

2. PLATO – Rational soul, Spiritual soul, and Appetitive soul.

My rational soul is, I want to pursue this field because I want to achieve my dreams. And

spiritual souls keep telling me that I'd be genuinely happy in this field. This is the right

path for me. I will be successful in this field. However, my appetitive soul tells me that

“what if I am wrong?”, “what if I failed? And “what if I didn't succeed?.”

3. AUGUSTINE – Relation to God, both in his recognition of God's love and his response

to it.

I've been through my darkest time, but I didn't lose hope because I felt His love even in

time of loneliness, and I have faith in Him.

4. DESCARTES – “I think, therefore I am”

I want to achieve success in everything that I do, so I work hard to get it.

5. HUME – “The self is not an entity over and beyond the physical body.”

Years ago, I was always scared to participate and recite in class because I am afraid to

make mistakes. I worked hard to change that mindset. Now, I can finally see my

improvements.

6. KANT – “Things that men perceive around them are not just randomly infused into the

human person without an organizing principle that regulates the relationship of all these

impressions.”

My friend always describes me as very compassionate to them and people. When I ask

them “why?'', they would say that it is because I always help people even in the small

things.

7. RYLE – “What truly matters is the behavior that a person manifests in his day-to-day
life.”

I am a very vocal person, especially when it comes to people who did things that aren't

good. I do call them out because I don't want to tolerate them and also for them to realize

that what they are doing is wrong. It is because I am a honest person.

8. MERLEAU-PONTY – “The mind and the body are intertwined that they cannot be

separated from one another.

I was 15 years old when I started to have Pyrophobia. Because of I experienced losing

our house in a fire.
