Speaking in Tongues (Initial Evidence)

Acts 2:1-4

I. Timing and Evidence of Speaking in Tongues

A. Timing
- When did they receive it?
- Conviction. Illumination, Regeneration, and Salvation.
- When they were filled with the Holy Spirit, they were already believers.
- Acts 2:4
- Who are they? The believers
- To be filled with the Holy Spirit is for Power.
- Acts 19:2
- Paul asked people of Ephesus if they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

B. Evidence
- Acts 2:4
- There is evidence that they received the Holy Spirit.
- Acts 10:44-46
- Peter, who is a bit racist went to Cornelius, when the people heard the scripture
they were filled with the Holy Spirit and they started to speak in tongues.
- How did Peter know that these people were filled with the Holy Ghost? They
spoke in tongues.
- Acts 19:6
- Paul lay his hands on them and they spoke in tongues.
- Acts 8:17-19
- Simon saw something. Take note of something.
- Charles Sparnham who started the Azusa Street Revival is the reason why there is
Pentecostal Movement. He persuaded his students to read the bible and apply
everything in their lives but they had problems with Acts 2. (December 1900) There must
be Speaking in Tongues. December 31, 1909 A chinese woman started speaking in
tongues.
- Could you be filled with the Holy Spirit and not speak in tongues? Possible but it is not
normal (Like an elephant with no trunk)
- How many believers should speak in tongues? All
- This is not a spiritual gift for some, it is for everyone.

- II. Purpose of Speaking of Tongues

1. Speaking of Tongues is a sign of surrender


a. Essence of sin is pride and wants to control everything
b. You will be like God.
c. Salvation involves humility and surrender
d. Tongues is a sign of surrender
e. Speaking in tongues is not in control.
f. Sometimes we will not do something because it will not happen.
g. God is challenging our pride of understanding and control
h. 1 Corinthians 1:27
i. Isaiah 28:11-12
j. God deliberately use the speaking in tongues because God knows that other
people will not accept it.

2. Speaking in Tongues is a Direct Connection to God


a. John 14:16 → “you know him”
b. 1 Corinthians 14:2 → speaks mysteries
c. We have language that the devil cannot fathom.
d. You are able to speak to God directly that goes beyond human limitations of
speech.
e. God is able to reveal something to you.
f. God’s power inside us through us. These power is unlocked by speaking in
tongues.

3. Speaking in Tongues is a sign of Redemption


a. James 3:6
i. Tongue can be used by Hell by sinning
b. James 3:4
i. Tongue is powerful
c. Speaking in tongues is redeemed by the Holy Spirit
i. Acts 2:7
ii. The moment when we worship God in speaking in tongues, they became
united.

III. Blessing of Speaking in Tongues

1. Power for Prayer and Praise


a. Acts 8:26
b. It is our spirit speaking through our mouth. Speaking in tongues is a perfect
prayer.
c. If you don’t believe in tongues, you are smarter than God.
d. God uses tongues to move people.
e. Dr. Carl Peterson, a brain specialist, during tongues → releases chemicals that
boost our immune system by 35 to 40%
f. Through research and testing he found out that as we pray in the Spirit, or
worship in the Spirit, (our heavenly language) there is activity that begins to take
place in our brain. As we engage in our heavenly language the brain releases 2
chemical secretions that are directed into our immune systems giving a 35 to 40
percent boost to the immune system. This promotes healing within our bodies.
Amazingly this secretion is triggered from a part of the brain that has no
other apparent activity in humans and is only activated by our Spirit led
prayer and worship.
