Idar-Oberstein—500 Years of Gem Carving History

The town of Idar-Oberstein, located in a scenic valley of the Hunsrück Mountains in the
western part of Germany, is actually a pair of villages a few miles apart which were politically
joined in 1933. Oberstein is known for its jewelry manufacturing and Idar is the gem cutting
center. Little known to Americans except those in the gem trade, in Europe, this town is known
as the “gemstone city” or Edelsteinstadt and has become an increasingly popular tourist
destination.

Historical records indicate that its 500-year-plus history and remarkable traditions of gemstone
cutting developed when miners found agates and amethyst crystals in Miocene-age basalt
formations nearby. However, many cutters in Idar claim that agate mining and cutting dates
back to Roman times, due to evidence of some Roman settlements not far away and a Roman
road that runs near an important source of cutting material.

Today the manufacturing there includes various cut gems, although originally, the industry
was founded only on the local deposits—particularly agate —but also jasper, rock crystal,
amethyst, and smoky quartz.

The city’s development of the agate industry, in the beginning of the 16th century, was based
on these mineral deposits, the availability of local sandstone used for the cutting and polishing
wheels, and water power to work the wheels. By the 1700s, there were about 15 workshops
cutting agate which used the nearby Nahe River for energy—a number which doubled by the
year 1800. However, when dwindling local agate deposits caused a slow down in the industry
and many cutters left the area. These emigrants discovered large agate deposits in Brazil,
they brought the material back and the cutting industry again began to flourish. By the late
19th Century as many as 150 cutting shops were in existence and the industry expanded from
cutting agate and jasper into carving various types of stone objects such as dishes, goblets,
bowls, snuff boxes, cane heads, parasol handles, fancy buttons, and even beads.

Now a town of about 50,000 inhabitants, Idar-Oberstein is recognized as the most

significant European cutting center for gemstones, other than diamond—and some of the
original family businesses are still in existence. The German Gemstone Museum (Deutsches
Edelsteinmuseum), situated there, devoted entirely to the display of minerals and cut gems,
jewelry, and carvings, is considered by many connoisseurs to be the best of its kind in the
world.

Exceptional Large Green Apatite
Madagascar
Faceted by Luigi Mariani
The name “apatite” comes from the Greek word apate, which means
“deceit” because it is easily confused with other minerals such as
zircon, aquamarine and indicolite. Given the small hexagonal crystals
in which apatite normally forms (see lot 1008 in this auction) this is a
large gem for the species and has exceptional high clarity. The rich
bottle green hue as well as the luster and clarity would easily allow this
stone to be mounted as a pendant. This spectacular gem is expertly

Oligoclase Feldspar Group: Suite
of Sunstones and Moonstones--
”Sun and Moon”
India
Oligoclase is not a well-known mineral
but has been used as a semi-precious
stone under the names of sunstone and
moonstone. Sunstone has flashes of reddish
color caused by inclusions of hematite while
moonstone shows a glowing shimmer called
adularescence. The display is produced
from lamellar intergrowths inside the crystal.
These intergrowths result from compatible
chemistries at high temperatures becoming
incompatible at lower temperatures and
thus a separating and layering of these two
phases. The resulting shimmer effect is
caused by a ray of light entering a layer and
being refracted back and forth by deeper
layers before it exits the crystal. This refracted
ray has a different character than when it 1048

Fine, Bright Orange “Contra Luz” Opal
Magdelena, Jalisco, Mexico
Opals were formed during the Cretaceous period and brought to the
Earth’s surface during the Pleistocene age. There are 25 or so varieties
of opals but the most significant fire opal deposits are found in Mexico.
One of the two largest sites for mining Mexican fire opal is located
near Magdalena, Jalisco, a small city located approximately 100 miles
east of Vallarta. Magdalena is in a region laden with igneous rocks,
1101, 1102 obsidian, volcanic lava, and more than 300 opal mines.

Mexican fire opals consist of silicon dioxide or silica spheres arranged

in an orderly pattern with iron oxide dispersed throughout giving the
fire opal its distinctive brilliant flame-like colors of yellow, orange, and
red. The three most important attributes of the fire opal are body
colors, transparency, and play-of-color (differing colors when viewed
from various angles). Simply put, the greater the play-of-color, the
more precious the gemstone. Because most opals are not faceted,
they are generally displayed in the cabochon form; however, fire opals
are often the exception.

Mexican fire opal was known by the Aztecs and was used by Mayans
as well for ritualistic purposes and in various mosaics. Even today
many connoisseurs believe that fire opals bestow courage, stamina,
and energy to the wearer due to its warm, fiery orange-red colors.
The volcanic regions of Mexico have produced some of the finest fire
opals ever seen. The present large freeform cabochon displays red
and orange fire as well as green flashes both on the face and with
the aid of transmitted light. Weighing approximately 24.38 carats and
measuring 24.11 x 16.98 x 12.70mm

White Kascholong Opal Carving Depicting a White
Peacock by Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio
Depicting the unusual subject matter of a white peacock this is a
unique, hand-fabricated sculpture incorporating a rare form of opal
known as kascholong opal. Derived from the Mongolian, it describes
a translucent, white opal with a porcelain appearance which does not
possess play-of-color. With similarities to mother-of-pearl it has on
occasion been called “mother-of-pearl opal”. The present high-quality
material, originating in Siberia, is extremely porous and suitable for
carving due to its hardness (Mohs 7.5), which is greater than fire opal
and more comparable to chalcedony. The feathers and feet of the
peacock have been rendered in gold vermeil. This is a stunning and
unique statement piece for any interior.
Measuring 34in across.

$40,000 - 60,000

Luis Alberto Quispe Aparicio

Following a second-generation family tradition in the fabrication of
objects d’art, Luis’ studio specializes in the carving of ruby. The
second hardest stone after diamond, few artists have managed
to successfully work this mineral since it requires a very advanced
technique for carving and polishing. His works are displayed in
museums in the United States and Europe and are enjoyed by private
collectors around the world.

Cerro Rico, Potosi, Bolivia
Cerro Rico, or Rich Mountain, was known as an Imperial City during
Spanish colonial times. Over the centuries some 3 million Quechua
Indians were put to work there to extract silver and tin ore from the
mountain. In addition to silver some other minerals can be found
there including this rare collector mineral known as phosphophyllite,

Large Amethyst Geode Split
Minas Gerais, Brazil
First identified in the 1600s, the term geode
comes from French géode, which in turn,
was derived from Latin and Greek word for
“earth”. Geodes form when mineral-rich
waters enter a cavity in a rock which then
undergoes a sudden change in pressure or
temperature, causing crystals to form from
the solution which line the cavity’s walls. The
present geode has been split into two in order
to reveal the inward pointing violet purple
crystals of amethyst lining the interior. Height

Large Amethyst Geode
Minas Gerais, Brazil
Amethyst geodes are created over the millennia through the formation
of gas cavities in lava tubes. The cavities then fill up with a liquid that
contains small amounts of iron. Over time, this liquid forms crystals
of amethyst. Crystals with a color that range from light lilac to deep
purple are formed when there is a trace of iron in the liquid, resulting
in amethyst geodes. Typically of tapering cylindrical form known in
the mineral hobby as “cathedrals”. Having an exceptionally elegant
form, the interior of this geode--known in the mineral hobby as a

impurities were present in the original quartz-

chromium is present, then the green-colored
muscovite mica variety called fuchsite can
occur disseminated throughout the quartzite
in parallel orientation. This gives aventurine its

sapphire and tiger’s eye, where microscopic rutile crystals bundle so
tightly that they bend light into band and star patterns. The present
exceptionally large stone of over 300 carats is from a from a limited

Rare and Large Green Sapphire
Burma
Long ago sapphires, with the exception of blue sapphires, were
often dubbed “oriental” and the term was used as a prefix before the
color designation. Green sapphire, for example, was called “Oriental
Emerald” until it was decided in the trade that the practice was
misleading (and gemologically inaccurate). While the gem gravels
of Sri Lanka occasionally produce very small green sapphires--the
present example originates from Burma--a significantly rarer source for
fancy-colored sapphires.

Of an impressively large size, this pastel green stone is a pure green

sapphire from Burma, unmodified by other colors. Its color is natural
and unenhanced by any heat treatment. This is not something
frequently encountered in the trade. Most sapphires appear to show
a blend of more than one color rather than a single pure hue. The
1189
present stone is rare for its substantial size, for its color and for its
excellent luster. While one may see small green sapphires from Sri
Lanka from time to time, a stone of this size and color saturation
originating from Burma is a very rare commodity indeed.

Yellow Scapolite

Scapolite, coming from the Greek word for “shaft”, is commonly

it is, nonetheless, a desirable stone for collectors. Its luster is superb
and with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 it would be of sufficient durability to
be mounted as a pendant or ring. The present oval-cut stone displays
an adamantine luster and vivid yellow hue as well as excellent cutting,

Large Rare Sinhalite
Sri Lanka
Sinhalite is a rare mineral commonly found
in brown to greenish brown and sometimes
greenish-yellow. First discovered in Sri Lanka,
(when it was still known as Ceylon), it was
misidentified as a brownish variety of the
normally green peridot. It was not until the
early 1950s that it was properly identified as
a new mineral. The name sinhalite is derived
from Sinhala, the Sanskrit name for the
island of Ceylon. While sinhalite is a relatively
unknown mineral to the general public, for
mineral collectors it is an important addition

Marra Mamba Tiger’s Eye Tabletop
Mount Brockman Station, Western Australia
Only rarely do Marra Mamba specimens
find their way to market, as the source for
this brilliant stone has now been mined out.
Fortuitous geologic circumstances produced
the limited deposits of this material, located
in central Western Australia, more than 1,000
kilometers northeast of Perth. Over millions
of years, water heated by volcanic activity
dissolved much of the silica from the banded
iron formation in this region, leaving huge iron
ore deposits of almost pure hematite. In other
places, red and yellow iron oxides and/or
silica were deposited as veins or replaced the
wall areas of fine cracks in the host rock. The
resulting stone, a highly sought-after variety of
tiger’s eye, is found only in this region.

The present specimen displays spectacular

bands of golden tiger’s eye, metallic black
hematite and brilliant red jasper. The gentle
curves of the layers are a testament to the
immense pressures to which the rock was
subjected over the millennia. Of circular

aesthetic table top is the only one of its kind

Possessed of both a high refractive index and high dispersion, zircon
is one of the few gems capable of rivaling diamond for brilliance and

zircon, diamond being one of them. In most zircons, the “fire” is often
masked by a dark body color. That is not the case with this wearable
and collectible stone. Zircons of more than 3 carats are exceedingly
rare. This beautiful zircon displays a rare natural color of orange with
little to no brown visible. This is a fine stone for the knowledgeable

Giant Fossil Clam Shell
Tridacna sp.
Pleistocene
Kenya
Fossilized clam shells are found in coral reef limestone along coastal
area quarries. The coral reef from which this amazing clam shell
originated was formed during the Pleistocene, the time of the last
ice age. The build-up of the reef took place during the main integral
period, 240,000-125,000 years ago. During the later interglacial
period, sea levels rose up to 20 meters and during this time the
largest part of the prehistoric fossil reef in which this specimen was
discovered was built up. Fossil clam shells are only found in the upper
layers of sediment; in coastal quarries they can only occasionally be
found. Their location near the surface suggests that they only lived
in this locality during the later part of the second reef-building period
of the Pleistocene. Today, living giant clams only occur in the Eastern
Indian and Pacific Oceans. This impressive and beautiful shell weighs

The Muonionalusta iron-nickel metal is known to be some of the

sizes such as this endpiece.

Dated to have impacted northern Sweden approximately one million

years ago, and initially discovered in 1906, this locality has become
one of the best sites for fine octahedrite irons. Searches for the impact
crater from the original shower, near the Arctic Circle have been
in vain, as several glacial periods have most likely transported the

These meteorites are almost always found buried under several feet of
glacial moraine, and require specialized metal detectors to be found
at these depths. The Muonionalusta is also the first meteorite in which
Stishovite has been identified, a rare and extremely hard silicon dioxide

Immersion for thousands of years in the Alaskan permafrost produced
the excellent patina and a rare blue mineralization which is so

Elephantidae family. As the woolly mammoth roamed the Alaskan
tundra during the last Ice Age, it was hunted by early humans for
meat, as well as for its tusks and bones, from which tools, art and
dwellings were made. It disappeared from the mainland at the end of
the Pleistocene, 10,000 years ago; experts argue over the extent to
which the cause of its extinction was due to climate change versus
hunting by humans. The present specimen exhibits the characteristic
