Rod Pumps
a downhole plunger is moved up and down via a engine at up at the surface. The plunger dispaces the fluid and brings
up the tubing through pump consisting of well place traveling and standing valves mounted in the pumps barrel

Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP)

Uses a downhole centrifugal pump that is driven by three phase, electrical current which is supplied by a cable that up
to the the surface on the outside of the tubing.

Gas Lift

The injection of gas down the annulus/casing into the tubing close to the bottom of the well. The injected gas lowers the
flowing density of the production fluid, therefore lowering the formation drawdown hence increase the inflow rate

Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP)

Uses a helical, metal rotor that is rotating in an elastomeric, double helical stator. The rotating action is supplied by
downhole electrical motor or by rotating rods.

Hydraulic Pumps

Uses a high pressure power fluid to: Drive a downhole turbine or flow through a venturi or jet, creating a low pressure
area which produces an increased drawdown and inflow from the reservoir

B.

Rod Pumps

Advantages
Can be used for a wide range of production rates and operating conditions
Simple to operate and maintain

Disadvantages

Volumetic efficiency (Capacity) of a rod pump is low.

Initial installation may have a high capital cost
Very limited application for deep, inclined and horizontal wells

Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP)

Advantages
Most efficient on a cost per barrel basis
Can achieve high production rates 100 - 60000 B/d even with high water cut
Can work in high temperature wells ( > 350 F) by use of high temperature motor and cables
Can be modified to lift corrosive fluids and sand
Can be used in horizontal and deviated wells if place in the verical or straight sections of the well

Disadvantages

Can be damage due to "Gas lock". Occurs in wells with high GOR fluids, downhole gas separators must be
installed.
Limted production range which is determined by type and number of stages, therefore changing production
rates requires either a pump change or installation of a variable - speed surface drive.
The tubing must be pulled for pump repairs or replacements
Can be modified to lift corrosive fluids and sand
Can be used in horizontal and deviated wells if place in the verical or straight sections of the well

Disadvantages

Can be damage due to "Gas lock". Occurs in wells with high GOR fluids, downhole gas separators must be

Gas Lift
Advantages

Can be used in crooked or deviated wellbores

Can be used in high temperature environments
Wireline retrievable gas lift valves can pulled and reinstalled without pulling the tubing, making it relatively
easy and economical to modify the design
Disadvantages

The availability of gas and cost of compression and injected can limit the method.
lift efficieny can be reduced by corrosion and paraffins.
Difficult to lift production fluid in fully depleting low pressure , low - productivity wells.
The start and stop nature of intermittent gas lift may cause downhole pressure surges and lead to increased
sand production.

Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP)

Advantages

Excellent for handling fluids with high solids content

Versatile
High Efficiency

Disadvantages

High torsional stresses placed on rod strings and temperature limitations on the stator elastomers
makes it not sutiable for deep wells

Hydraulic Pumps

Advantages

Multiple wells can be produced using a single surface power fluid installation
Adaptable to changing field conditions
Heavy viscosu fluids are easier to lift after mixing with lighter power fluids

Disadvantages

Potential fire hazards if oil is used as a power fluid

Diffculity in pumping produced fluids with high solids content, the effects of gas on the pumps efficency
and the need for dual strings of tubing on some installations
