Think
about the important people in your life. Whom do you love and admire? Is it a family member, a friend,
a teacher, or someone else? Choose someone who is alive, because we will use simple present tense to
describe this person.
1. Brainstorm
First, make a list of people you may want to write about. Then, choose one person on your list to write
about. Circle the name of the person you wish to write about.
Now, brainstorm some ideas about your person. What do they look like (appearance)? What is their
personality like? What important activities do they do? Remember, when you brainstorm, do not write
sentences. Simple get some ideas written on the paper so that you can use them later when you write.
Try to fill the box with many ideas. You don’t have to use all of the ideas in your paragraph, but you will
have many ideas to choose from.
2. Organize Your Ideas: Place your ideas from your brainstorm into the correct boxes here. Organizing
your ideas will help write an organized paragraph.

4. Revise
Bring your first draft to class on Wednesday, October 20. We will revise together in class.
If you want to get started, look for any irrelevant sentences in your first draft and cross them
out.
Make sure that you carefully read pages 26-28 and complete Practice 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in your
Writers at Work textbook. These practices will give you good experience with topic and
supporting sentences!
5. Edit
Again, bring your first draft to class on Wednesday, October 20. WE will edit together in class.
If you want to get started, look at your sentences. Make sure that each sentence has a subject
and a verb. Make sure that you use simple present tense to describe facts and present
progressive to describe any activities that your important person is doing “these days.”
Study fragments and run-on sentences very carefully on pages 30-33 in your Writers at Work
textbook.
