increase of 25 per cent on the
2016 show. The four-day show
closed on 30 November.

competition regulator for its

offshore businesses of TTS.
On 5 November
MacGregor, part of the
Cargotec group, received
a clearance decision from
the German Federal Cartel
Office (Bundeskartellamt)
for the company’s acquisition
of the marine and offshore
businesses of TTS Group
ASA. The acquisition was
announced on 8 February
2018. Completion of the
intended transaction is
still subject to regulatory
approvals in China and
South Korea, Cargotec said.
These are expected by the
end of 2018.
GRT demolishes STS crane

GRT described it as a rare

Manitowoc forecasts a total
revenue for 2018 of $1,800 to

EBITDA figure between $105
and $115 million.

that popped up on this project, as
usually happens, but thanks to
the teamwork and co-operation

keep the project essentially on
time and on budget.

GRT specialises in engineered
heavy lifting and transport and
has a long history with this

it. The crane stood at 54.8 metres

PORT SERVICES

specialist ALE has agreed with
Scotland’s Port of Dundee,
(owned by Forth Ports), and
lifting, jacking and storage
specialist OM Heavy Lift, to
provide the full service of
port operations.
ALE said it will work
alongside OM Heavy Lift –
which bought ALE’s Gottwald
MK1500 crane – and the Port
of Dundee to provide a more
complete heavy lifting and
port handling scope of work
to the renewables market.
“We are pleased to be
working together to
optimise our services,” said
Chris Taylor, commercial
director at ALE. “The Port
of Dundee is becoming an
increasingly bigger player
in the offshore markets and
we can really optimise these
opportunities and provide a
fully integrated service.”
GRT had already moved the
SSA International group crane
three times before its demolition
into only three ports in the world.
In a history spanning almost 40
years, it is estimated to have lifted
around four million containers.

of Excellence event is going
from strength to strength, the
association said. Companies
interested in entering and
attending next year’s ESTA
awards are being encouraged
to act soon as the 2019 event is
likely to sell out early.
Smaller companies are
especially being encouraged
to get involved as ESTA wants
to showcase the industry’s
successes. Ton Klijn, ESTA

The awards are held in spring
every year and have become
very popular with the dinner and
presentation event regularly
attracting more than 500 guests.
The 2019 event is expected to
be the biggest yet and will take
place on the evening of 11 April
in Munich, Germany, during
the Bauma construction
equipment exhibition.
The deadline for awards
entries is 18 January 2019.
This awards event is run
jointly by ESTA – the European
Association of Abnormal Road
Transport and Mobile Cranes
– and International Cranes and
Specialized Transport magazine.
They are open to companies that
are members of the European
national associations in ESTA,
tonnes, respectively. According
to Comansa, the improvements
have been achieved due to the
use of more compact wire rope,
with a smaller diameter, and a
lighter trolley-hook set design.
In addition to increasing the
maximum load capacity of the
cranes, Comansa said these
changes improve the loads in
all radii, including the jib-end
load. Comansa said it has also
introduced a modular counterjib
design which improves the
counterjib radius of both models
when they are erected with
reduced jib lengths. For special
projects, a 90 metre radius jib is
also now available as an option.
All models, other than the
20 tonne 21LC660, have a
new 132 kW hoist mechanism
providing speeds of up to
300 metres per minute.

Sarens said safety was a key focus when
designing the crane. The SGC-250 has a full
redundancy system for slewing and hoisting
operations, in which all 12 of the 310 kW, Tier
4 compliant Caterpillar engines (contained in
six power packs) are connected. The SGC-250
receives an EN ISO 13849-1 safety standard
rating of ‘PL E’ – which Sarens says is the
highest performance level possible.
The SGC-250 can operate with two hook
blocks: one on the main boom and one on the
jib, which enhances its job site coverage. The
crane’s main hook block weighs 105 tonnes

All SGC cranes share the same hook blocks
and has a safe working load (SWL) of 3,200

load hoisting (four for the main hoist and two
for the jib hook) while the other four are
boom hoisting winches. Maximum line pull
is 600 kN.
Double duty
Counterweight is up to 52 specially reinforced
containers, which are also used to transport
components of the disassembled crane.
Each container, when filled with locally
sourced sand or other ballast, provides
counterweight of 100 tonnes. Assembling the
crane takes eight to ten weeks. Construction
of the components for the SGC-250 started
in August 2017 and it was assembled in
September 2018. It was about 18 months
from the start of the project to its unveiling.
The SGC-250 was unveiled at the inland
port of Ghent in Belgium on 9 November.
Sarens CEO, Wim Sarens, and director of
technical solutions, projects and engineering,
Carl Sarens, presented the crane to an
audience of more than 300 guests. Sarens
described the crane as being the first of the
third generation of SGC. It joins the SGC-120
and SGC-140 which are out at work in the UK
and Kazakhstan, respectively. Smallest in
the series is the SGC-90. At the inauguration
event the new crane’s name, Big Carl, was
also announced.
The SCG-250 will work in the UK on
the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station
construction project. Sarens has been
commissioned to use the crane to lift more
than 600 pieces of pre-fabricated components
on the project over about four years. ■

to be transported to the UK, where it will play
a key role in the construction of the Hinkley
Point C nuclear power station, in Somerset,
south west England. It will be based there

FOUR NEW MEGA JACK 300 TOWERS FOR WORK IN EUROPE
UK-headquartered global heavy lift and transportation specialist ALE has expanded its
300 tonne capacity Mega Jack 300 fleet with four new towers that will be available for
civils projects throughout Europe.
The Mega Jack 300 jacking system was launched in 2018 and ALE describes it as
“a compact and versatile system that offers a superior solution to traditional climbing
jacks, across a wide variety of applications”.
The system was designed in-house by
ALE’s R&D department with the aim of
providing a cost-effective solution to jack up
heavy modules on sites where either space,
or time to do the job, is restricted. A set of 16
towers has already been used in Kuwait to
jack up hundreds of pipe rack modules more
than five metres high.
The four new towers will be delivered to
ALE in the UK where they will first be used
on a number of forthcoming bridge projects.
They bring the total amount of towers in the
group’s global fleet to more than 20.

Enerpac’s SL100 and SL200 hydraulic gantries
Gantry additions
Sarens is not the only company with new
heavy lift equipment; international high-
pressure hydraulics specialist Enerpac has
announced the latest additions to its hydraulic
gantry product line: the SL100 and SL200
Super Lift hydraulic gantries. According to
Enerpac, they offer higher lifting capacities
and accurate load positioning from 100 to
200 tonnes, respectively, on a narrow 610 mm
track gauge.
With two-stage lift cylinders giving a
maximum lifting height of 4.75 m (SL100) and
6.7 m (SL200), typical applications include
transportation and installation of presses,
machine tools, electrical transformers, and
injection moulding machines.
Enerpac says they are designed for
safe lifting in confined or limited access
spaces and that they are easy to mobilise
and demobilise.
The gantries include self-contained
hydraulics which Enerpac says allows quicker
and safer deployment. Each gantry leg
has self-propelled wheels for travel along
the narrow gauge track, together with
Enerpac’s Intellilift synchronised control
system which, the company says, provides
wireless control, unrestricted operator
positions and automatic synchronisation
for lifting, lowering and travelling.
“With significant growth in a number
of industrial sectors, the SL100 and SL200
models were designed to meet the need
for greater lifting capacities and new
applications,” says Peter Crisci, product
line director for Enerpac’s Heavy Lifting
Technology product line.
Additional components and accessories
are available, including header beams, lifting

also tarpaulin covers and transport frames for

side shift units, slings and shackles.
Enerpac says all of its gantries are CE and
ASME B30.1 compliant and tested at maximum
capacity and maximum extension and tested
under witness of Lloyd’s Register. “Safety is
one of our top priorities,” adds Crisci.

Ring crane upgrade

Returning to super heavy lift ring cranes,
international heavy lift and transportation
specialist Mammoet has increased the
capacity of its 200,000 tonne-metre
class PTC 200 DS.
The crane is already the largest in the
Dutch company's fleet. It has been upgraded
so that it can lift a 2,000 tonne structure in one
piece rather than in multiple sections. The
work will be carried out for Indian oil refinery
owner Reliance Industries and will take place
at the Jamnagar Refinery in Jamnagar, India.
Mammoet says it is the largest refinery in
the world. This approach is much faster and
will help minimise downtime of the refinery
during turnaround and maintenance work,
Mammoet claims.
Mammoet has also announced its
completion of work at a Gulf Coast
polypropylene plant undergoing expansion.
For maximum efficiency Mammoet decided
Mammoet has increased the capability of its 200,000 tonne-metre class PTC 200 DS ring crane
to use its Liebherr-made LR 13000 crawler
crane, which has a lifting capacity of 3,000
tonnes, located in one central position to carry
out all lifts.
Following the first round of lifts at the
plant, Mammoet reconfigured the crane with
a 72 m luffing jib on the end of 96 m of main
boom to execute 16 lifts ranging from 38.5
to 482 tonnes. The heaviest lift was a purge
bin. It was lifted from the support saddles
and tailed using one of Mammoet’s 600 tonne
capacity Demag CC 2800 lattice crawlers,
made by Terex Cranes in Germany. Next
the load was swung through 180 degrees
and placed in an existing housing. The lift
was made inside the scheduled three-hour
window. Several of the lifts were made with
the crane set at almost 129 m radius.
Eddie Ramos, project manager, says,
“Mammoet safely installed all major
equipment using only the LR 13000. By
applying different boom configurations to
extend its reach, the crane could carry out
the lifts from one location,” he says. “This,
in conjunction with the knowledgeable crew
on site, saved time and minimised disruption
to surrounding works, ultimately helping to
meet the client’s schedule.”
Project completion is due in the first
quarter of 2020. ■

Fagioli transports
hydrocrackers
In Italy, heavy lift and transportation specialist
Fagioli moved two large hydrocracking
reactors, each weighing 1,535 tonnes,
between the sites they were manufactured at
and the port of Marghera.
The reactors were located at energy

has added a 20-axle railcar, the Texx
900, to its specialized railcar fleet.
This 20-axle shiftable depressed deck
flatcar is designed to move heavy haul
and over dimensional loads up to around
900,000 pounds (408 tonnes) and can shift
up 13 inches (330 mm), down 11 inches
(280 mm), and 14 inches (356 mm) left to
right. The deck space for cargo is 40 feet
long, 4 feet high, and 9 feet, 6 inches wide
(12 x 1.2 x 2.9 metres).
“We are excited for this new addition
to the BNSF Logistics rail fleet. The Texx
900 is one of three similar cars in North
America and the only of its kind available
for booking outside a private fleet,” said
Dan Curtis, BNSF Logistics president.
“We are so proud of our engineers for
their relentless work to restore this car
to be a lighter, stronger asset.”

Each reactor weighed
1,535 tonnes and was 60 metres long
ATB Riva Calzoni sites in Roncadelle and
Venice. From these sites Fagioli moved
them to the port; from there, they were then
shipped to Nigeria where they will be used in
a refinery being built by Dangote Refining.
Each reactor measured 60 metres long
and in order to transport them, whilst
complying with onsite ground pressure
restrictions, Fagioli combined 72 axles of
Cometto MSPE 40t.
In total the self propelled transporters
with electronic steering formed two convoys
each more than 60 m long, 8.5 m wide, and
10 m in height.
Technip awards Jumbo
Leviathan contract
Jumbo Offshore has won a contract for the
transport and installation of a 410 tonne
subsea module as part of the Leviathan
development off the coast of Israel.
Technip awarded Jumbo the contract
where the manifold will be installed at a depth
of 1,643 metres. Technip’s project includes
a subsea production system connecting
high-rate subsea oil wells to a fixed platform
around 10 km off the coast. Jumbo will also
install other modules at a depth of 86 m. In
addition, it will also transport equipment
from the US Gulf Coast to the Eastern
Mediterranean sea.
Commenting on the job, Brian Boutkan,
Jumbo Offshore head of sales and business
development Americas, said, “By using one
of our DP-equipped heavy lift construction
vessels we can provide a unique solution for
the transportation and installation aspects of
this project.”

HOLLEMAN TRANSPORT JOB
The Bulgarian branch of heavy and
oversized transport specialist Holleman
completed a delivery of equipment for
Bulgarian copper group Aurubis Bulgaria.
The cargo arrived by boat and was
loaded onto trailers at the Port of
Ruse-East, Bulgaria. From there it was
transported to the consignee within
three days. The overland transport was
challenging due to the size of the load,
with the largest item measuring 5.40
metres wide and 5.10 m high.
The job required three route studies.
At one point the largest load passed
through a tunnel with only 40 mm
clearance. To transport the items,
Holleman used a combination of 270 mm
low-bed trailers and 80 cm semi-trailers.
Despite this, the height of the cargo meant
Holleman had to use many secondary
roads which, in turn, required the lifting
of overhead wires and traffic control.
The Leviathan Field is around 125 km
west of Haifa, Israel, and 35 km west of the
Tamar field in the eastern Mediterranean
Levantine Basin.
Jumbo’s fleet of heavy lift installation
vessels range in capacity from 650 to 3,000
tonnes. They operate worldwide in the oil
and gas and renewable energy industries.

Constant change
ICST looks at the rise and fall of markets in the fast-paced
global wind industry, as well as some innovative new
installation techniques. CHRISTIAN SHELTON reports
W
ith all the publicity surrounding the
need to reduce carbon emissions
and increase renewable energy,
you’d be forgiven for thinking that the global
wind market is flourishing. And in much of the
world it is... but not everywhere. Much like the
wind itself, the market fluctuates and in 2018
the German market lulled.
Until this year Germany had been a key
wind market, providing a fruitful source of
work for many transportation and lifting
companies. Earlier in the year, however, the
German government changed the way in
which its onshore wind auctions worked so
that bidding companies now need a permit.
This, combined with additional permitting
challenges, resulted in the latest German
onshore wind auction being under-subscribed.
In October 2018 the German Federal Network
Agency, BNetzA, announced the results of the
latest German onshore wind auction: only 363
MW of capacity won a contract, compared to
the 670 MW on offer. More than 900 MW of
projects were pre-approved for the auction
and had a permit but only a third of these
actually bid.
According to WindEurope, a Brussels-
based association that promotes the use
of wind power in Europe, the problem was
that many wind farm companies faced legal
challenges to their permits because regional
siting plans (that determine the location of
wind farms) are not as robust as they should
be, potentially exposing wind farm companies
to penalties for non-delivery.
Compounding the problem, it also became
harder to get permits for new wind farms
in Germany. According to Wind Europe, two
years ago it took 300 days; now it takes up to
700 days.
WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson said, “The
German government was right to change the
auction rules so that wind farms now need

a permit before they can bid. But it’s got
harder to get a permit. And even when you
get one, you’re exposed to legal challenges
because the regional siting plans are not
robust enough. Germany needs to address
this otherwise the auctions will continue to be
under-subscribed like this last one. And the
prices will be higher than they should be.
“This adds to the uncertainty already facing
wind in Germany, with the coalition still failing
to define the auction volumes for the coming
years. The wind industry is already laying
people off in Germany. The government has
got to sort things out fast.”
Rise and fall
This sentiment was echoed by wind specialist
Mariusz Sudol, who – along with Benjamin
Noé – heads up the dedicated wind division
of international heavy lift and transportation
specialist Sarens. A year ago Sarens set up its
dedicated wind division with the aim of better
serving its clients in the wind sector.
“It’s been a terrible year for wind-related
work in Germany,” laments Sudol. “We were
counting on the market in Germany being
strong but, because of the change in permit
law, the market has died. The wind market
is fast-moving and the difficulty is that it is
not constant – it changes year to year. One
year you can have lots of work in one country
and then the next, nothing. For example,
in 2014/15 we were very busy in Poland,
assembling almost 200 units per year. Then, in
2016/17, this dropped to just one or two units
per year. In Germany we were very busy, with
20 lattice boom cranes working there; now,
since the second half of 2018, we don’t have
any there at all.
“We cannot predict what will happen or
afford to keep all our cranes in one country,
so we really need to focus and keep on top
of what is happening in the wind market.
We know, for example, that Norway and the
Scandinavian countries will be busy, so we’ve
now transferred lots of our cranes there.”
In addition, the Spanish market is currently
proving to be a good source of work for
Sarens. “We’ve had some really big orders
from Spain,” Sudol said. “Next year we will
be working for Siemens Gamesa Renewable
Sarens is trying to reach developing markets
Energy and we’ll have around 40 to 50 cranes
out in Spain. We are also working for General
Electric, together with Fairwind, on a large
project involving 81 wind turbines in Spain. In
addition, we are doing lots of smaller jobs in
France, Belgium and Holland.”
Sudol says Sarens has also been working
in Australia, Africa, Vietnam, Serbia. “And next
year we will be very focused on Russia and
the Ukraine,” he adds. “We are also trying to
reach developing markets that other heavy lift
companies don’t go to rather than just sticking
to established markets.” He cites Sarens’
work in Mauritania and South Africa as being
good examples of this.
With such a widespread and fluctuating
client base Sudol stresses the importance of
being prepared. “We are very well-equipped
with new cranes right now. For example, we
have two 750 tonne lattice boom LG1750 SX
cranes. One is in Australia, and the other
is based in Poland, although it is currently
working in Norway for Vestas.
“We also have a Demag PC 3800-1
pedestal crane which is the pedestal version
of the 650 tonne capacity CC 3800-1 lattice
boom crawler crane. It was developed by
Terex Demag in close co-operation with
Sarens.” According to Sarens, the Demag »

PC 3800-1 offers improved crane capacity,
especially on the main boom, and there is less
need for extensive ground preparation since it
can level itself on outriggers.
Sarens has also established a presence
in Taiwan with its newly formed Sarens in
Taiwan offshoot. According to the company,
Sarens in Taiwan is positioned to make the
most of the Taiwanese government‘s policy
on offshore wind energy, which is generating
growth opportunities. The government of
Taiwan will be awarding a total of 10.5 GW
in grid capacity for offshore wind contracts,
and is already on track to add 4.066 MW of
offshore wind power by 2025, Sarens claims.
To meet new development needs, Sarens
in Taiwan will maintain a fleet of SPMT,

SGC-120s, SGC-90s, and CC 8800s and
will provide onshore logistics for
offshore projects.
In China, a joint venture between Sarens
and Chinese state-owned logistics company
Sinotrans has resulted in one of the larger
cranes in Sarens’s fleet, the 1,600 tonne
capacity CC 8800-1, plus a Boom Booster kit,
being transported over there, along with its CC
6800 crane. Sarens says that the two cranes
will be available for a range of work, including
offshore wind farm operations.
Despite having such an extensive fleet,
Sudol says Sarens is also looking to develop
its fleet further. “We are currently considering
buying more cranes specifically for the wind
market,” Sudol concludes.

“In particular, we are looking at buying
crawler and truck cranes.” And despite the
sudden decline of wind work in Germany, the
fluctuating nature of the market means Sudol
remains positive: “We will be back working
there very soon, I hope.”
Netherland-based international heavy
lift and transport specialist Mammoet is
also expanding its presence to better serve
the wind market. It remains undeterred by
the decline in the German market. On 13
December 2018, the company opened a new
office in Hamburg – a city which it says is
home to most of its customers in the wind
industry. Mammoet Germany said the new
office will allow it to expand and improve its
offerings to the North German market.
Australian market
Australia is also an important wind market
for Mammoet. In September 2018 it signed a
contract with Goldwind Australia, a subsidiary
of Chinese wind turbine manufacturer
Goldwind, for a multi-year framework
agreement with all contract terms and
conditions agreed upfront, providing Goldwind
Australia the option to select Mammoet for its
future wind farms in Australia.
Mammoet has already installed a project
team in Melbourne to commence operations.
The first projects planned will comprise
erecting a total of 253 Goldwind wind turbine
generators in Victoria.
For the purpose of this agreement,
Mammoet says it has extended its Australian
crane fleet with two new 750 tonne capacity
Liebherr LG 1750-SX cranes. According to
Mammoet operations manager Riki McMahon,
the LG 1750 is an ideal crane to work with the

wind turbines. “The addition of these cranes
ensures we are equipped for the future
developments and demands of the market,”
he says.
Further investments will be made in all
terrain support cranes, trucks, trailers and
auxiliary equipment, the company adds.

and Esteyco developed a wi-fi controlled
horizontal guidance system that enabled the
manoeuvres to be performed remotely, from a
boat located away from the tower.
From March to April 2018 ALE performed
test lifts of the T2 section, weighing 240
tonnes, then the T1 section, weighing 360
tonnes, both measuring 33 m high. Then ALE’s
new horizontal guidance system was used
to perform the lifting of the T2 section with
nacelle, weighing 540 tonnes.
The final offshore installation took place
two months later. This phase involved the
lowering of the gravity base structure
and transportation, installation and
maintenance platform from the port of
Arinaga, Gran Canaria, to the Plataforma
Oceánica de Canarias.
ALE performed the final lifting of the
T1 and T2 sections with nacelle, weighing
960 tonnes, in July 2018. According to ALE,
this lifting manoeuvre avoided the need for
costly crane vessels by using strand jacks
and the new horizontal guidance system.
ALE says it also developed a new type of
galvanised strands for the project, which have
greater resistance to the corrosion that can be
encountered on offshore projects, as well as a »

El Llano wind farm

Remaining in the Southern Hemisphere,
heavy lifting and transportation company
ALE reports it has provided the full-service
package for the El Llano wind farm in
Argentina. The job comprised the discharge
and port handling, transport, assembly, and
electro-mechanical installation of 14 wind
turbines comprising 154 components.
ALE received the wind components at
Puerto Madryn, in Patagonia. They were
then transported to site using a selection
of trailers. ALE used 36 conventional axle
lines and two spacers, three extendable
semi-trailers plus two trailers of different
capabilities. For the discharge on site, ALE
provided several cranes, ranging from 95 to
250 tonnes capacity. For the installation and
assembly scope, ALE positioned a Liebherr
LR 1600 W/2 crawler as the main crane, along
with Liebherr LTM 1500 and LTM 1250 mobile
cranes, as well as an LTM 1095 mobile crane
for the assembly of the T1 and T2 sections and
for support activities.

Areas of innovation
Offshore, ALE has been busy, too. ALE
completed work on the H2020 Elican project
off the coast of Gran Canaria led by Spanish
civil engineering and architecture firm
Esteyco. The job involved creating a bespoke
solution for installation of what ALE calls 'the
world’s first self-installing telescopic offshore
wind turbine'.
According to ALE, it was a complex project
that involved a lot of co-ordination with other
parties so planning began almost two years
before the first test lifts were carried out.
To reduce risk and increase safety
on the project, ALE’s R&D department

new recoiler design to work within the limited
space. This rolls over the unit and eliminates
the need for the strand guide, ALE explains.
“In co-ordination with Esteyco, we have
developed specific solutions for all the
challenges resulting from the project and
reduced risk thanks to our engineering
designs. This project has really demonstrated
our capabilities in the renewables sector
and the confidence our clients have in our
innovative methodologies for us to carry out
more projects involving these types of towers,
both in offshore and onshore,” said Cecilio
Barahona, project engineer at ALE’s
Spanish branch.
Self erecting prototype
Onshore, another bespoke engineering
solution ALE provided was to heighten the
prototype of one the world’s highest wind
towers: the Nabralift self erecting tower.
The job also involved transportation of the
450 tonne wind tower, in Navarra, Spain.
The Nabralift self erecting tower,
designed by Spanish wind turbine component
manufacturer Nabrawind Technologies,
stands 160 m high.
According to ALE, Nabrawind is working
on developing solutions for installation of wind
towers without the use of cranes, whatever

To transport the wind tower, ALE used 12
SPMT axle lines. Once in position, it used three
strand jack units to heighten it.

engineer David Arias Blanco. “Recognising our
track record in Spain, the client was confident
we could supply the complex solution

The STS comprises a diverse schedule of
presentions covering key industry topics, an
exhibit centre with 60 booths, and updates on

The safety evangelist

This last article in the series takes the form of an interview in which ALEX DAHM asks MARCO VAN DAAL
about his drive to improve safety in the lifting and transport industry around the world

O
ne of the main reasons for asking
Marco van Daal to write a series of
articles on safety for ICST magazine
was his clear commitment, right from the
outset, to the value of learning how to do
something properly. Five-and-a-half years
later, having written 65 articles published as
The Knowledge, helps confirm that dedication.
Every month van Daal found time to
write another instalment in the series, in
between his regular work training, conducting
seminars and delivering presentations on how
to safely execute lifting, rigging and transport
project, covering all likely (and some less so)
types of equipment and methods. His primary
aim is to help give everyone involved on site
the best tools and greatest chance of safely
heading for home at the end of every day.

WHAT MADE YOU BECOME

A 'SAFETY EVANGELIST'?
I have never been called this but it has a
nice ring to it. I have always had a thirst for
knowing how things work. As a kid I used to
take things apart just to see what was inside.
Vacuum cleaners, VCRs, TVs, radios –
basically anything I could get my hands on,
much to the dismay of my parents. Once I
figured out how it worked I wanted to tell them
about it. But they were only interested to know
why I had eight screws left over that used to
be part of the vacuum cleaner.
When I joined Mammoet back in 1993,
fresh out of university and green as grass,
I met engineers and operations guys who
enjoyed explaining how things worked. Soon

I found myself in a situation where I realised
that the more I knew, the more there was that
I didn’t know. That kept me going and drove
me to ask more questions.
To make it easy on myself (I have been told
that engineers like myself are naturally lazy
and I cannot completely disagree with that) I
broke things down into ‘basic building blocks‘
I knew I could remember. Without realising
it when I started doing them, this is still how
I conduct my seminars. I try and present a
seemingly complex matter in a very simple
and easy to understand way. Laws of Newton,
buoyancy, trigonometry, transport and crane
stability, gravity, tides and much more are
explained in such a way that everybody (no
exception) understands the principles.
I live by a statement once made by Albert
Einstein, see Figure 1.
At some point in time the roles slowly

reversed and I became the one answering
questions and explaining the working and
principles. I didn’t even realise this was
happening, it was pointed out to me by a
colleague. I noticed a strange thing taking
place in our industry. Asking questions
was often a taboo because it was thought
and taught that we are supposed to know
everything that happens on our projects
and why. Unfortunately, this is seldom the
case and it has led to unsafe situations, near
misses and some seriously horrific accidents.
Before long I started to like the explaining
and talking to colleagues, clients, engineers,
sales people and anybody who had a question.
One thing led to another and now 25 years
after my first encounter with heavy equipment
I make a decent living giving seminars,
training and speeches around the world. This
is actually quite funny because I have always
been afraid of speaking in front of large
groups of people.
WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE THINGS THAT NEED
TO BE DONE TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY
OF ACCIDENTS IN OUR INDUSTRY?
In my mind there are only two things:
communication and training. I could go as
far as saying that only training is required, as
communication is part of training but, since »

communication (or lack thereof) is such a
large contributing factor to accidents, I often
list it as a separate item. Training includes:
understanding the concepts (before you
actually get your hands on the equipment);
communication (agree on who gives the
instructions and how and who follows them);
hands-on training (to learn the functions of
the equipment); follow-up training (to stay
up-to-date with new developments and new
versions of the equipment); and, eventually,
the training of performing the job (this also
gets you the experience that prepares you for
even bigger and more complex projects).
For reasons that I have not been able
to figure out, training is not a line item in
the budget of many heavy lift and transport
companies. Maybe this is because it is seen as
a cost rather than as an investment.
It is strange to me that human resource
personnel and accounting personnel (to name
but two professions) often attend training
even though they have been educated for
years in school to perform that profession.
Heavy transport and lifting personnel rarely
attend training even though there is no formal
education and most knowledge is passed on
verbally within the company. See Figure 2.
HOW FAR CAN WE REALISTICALLY
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS?
Ideally we want zero accidents. Realistically
we have to acknowledge that this is not
possible. We are working with humans and
humans make mistakes. It’s as simple as
that. According to my research, 80 per cent
of all accidents or incidents are caused by
some sort of error in communication and
15 % by lack of proper training (not being
communication training). See Figure 3.
I believe that with some basic training we
can reduce the number of accidents by 50 %
easily. The rest will be a bit harder to tackle
as we see more and more that heavy lift and
transport projects are more price driven
than safety or quality driven. This is a bigger
problem in developing countries than it is in
developed countries.
I'd like to draw an analogy with the airline
industry in the USA. All airlines combined in
US airspace amount to 15 million flights a
year, carrying almost a billion passengers.
One in 1.4 million flights suffers a serious
incident. This doesn’t mean that an aircraft

crashes but it makes an emergency landing
for a wide range of reasons. One in 1.4 million
flights. It means that theoretically you could
board an aircraft every day, seven days a
week, 52 weeks a year for 3,835 years without
experiencing an incident.
Our industry has a long way to go.
WHAT IS THE WORST EXAMPLE OF A BAD
PRACTICE THAT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT?
The one that comes to mind straightaway is
the bridge replacement at Alphen aan den
Rijn in the Netherlands. This accident in 2015
was completely avoidable. It was caused
by a total breakdown in communication at
every level and lack of respect for the laws
of nature. To position two hydraulic cranes of
different capacities on two barges of different
sizes performing a tandem lift close to the
crane’s maximum capacity and then plan to
tow the two barges with the load suspended
while having no ballast plan or pumps
on board is putting equipment, property

and human life at risk and that is… well...
inexcusable. See Figure 4.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF
FINDING OUT AT A LATE STAGE THAT
SOMETHING IS NOT GOING TO WORK?
This is a bit more difficult because we don’t
get to see these examples. They are caught
just in time and (hopefully) suspended and
fixed to avoid an accident. I can draw from
my own experience while being the project
manager on a triple load-out project.
The last of the structures was being
loaded on SPMT [self propelled modular
transporter] while the barge was prepared.
Our client arranged the barge. They had
submitted all barge data to us in order to
prepare the ballast plan and determine the
travel path of the SPMT. An important detail
to mention is that we never saw a side view
of the barge. A plan view and the ballast tank
layout was all we ever saw. When the barge
arrived it turned out to be a launch barge
with a slanted stern where the rocker beams
are normally installed. Basically, we ran out
of real estate to drive on. Within 24 hours a
structure was designed and installed to
allow the last load-out to still take place.

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO MAKING THE MESSAGES,
METHODS AND INFORMATION FROM TRAINING
COURSES ACTUALLY SINK IN?
As I said earlier, it is unfortunately still not
common in our industry to send heavy lift
and transport personnel for training. Slowly,
however, it is changing for the better. A few
driving forces are behind this development.
Clients are asking more critical questions
now than they did once upon a time. Large
EPC contractors are getting more critical in
their sub-contractor selection. Insurance
company people attend heavy lift and
transport training so they better understand
their exposure.
Last but not least, unfortunately, almost
50 % of my clientele has just suffered an
accident or near miss and they realise that »

training. These are the basic building blocks of
any successful company.
One thing I realised very quickly is having a
degree (even graduating cum laude) gives you
a bit of an edge over those who don’t, but not
for very long. Out in the field we are all equal.
We are all guys working with and around big
and heavy stuff that demands respect.
For continued success and growth,
employees have to like what they are doing. It
is the task of management to create this kind
of environment. Workers have to be open-
minded. Others may have a better solution.
Also important is a willingness to try a new
approach and, with that, accept the fact that
you may have to start over again.
In today’s fast-paced environment and
instant-gratification society, it may come as a
bit of a surprise to some that it takes time to
become successful. Regardless of education,
you will likely have to start at the bottom and
work your way up to become experienced
and, even more important, to become trusted
by others.
With my seminars and books I help
companies and individuals to obtain that
knowledge and become more successful
and trusted.
But be aware – knowledge is not yours to
keep, it is yours to share. ■

How safety determines your future. MIKE CHALMERS reports
W
inning an SC&RA safety award
impacts a company across multiple
facets of the business. It ranges
from promotion, worker retention and
insurance coverage to company morale and
even the ability to secure future work.
A proven safety culture, strengthened by
industry recognition in the form of awards,
speaks volumes about a company’s level
of commitment to its culture, its people, its
mission and its customer base. Undoubtedly
an established reputation for safety can grow
a company’s bottom line.
For SC&RA members looking to apply,
Crane & Rigging Project Safety and Crane
Rental Service Awards are given each month.
All other SC&RA awards are recognised
and presented at the Association’s Annual
Conference each April. Yearly awards are
presented in four categories: Crane & Rigging,
Transportation, Industry and Longevity.
Mitch Unger, Miller Transfer president,
knows about the residual value that safety can
bring to a company’s financial future. Miller
received an SC&RA Transportation Award and
the Driver of the Year award for Mike Nichols
in 2016. Safety begins, Unger believes, with
core values and a commitment to culture.
“We try to be as transparent as possible
with our workforce, and we want them to be
all in with us in the same way that we want to
be all in with them,” Unger maintained. “At the

end of the day, it doesn’t matter what industry
you’re in. We have a proven process and we
share that with prospective customers. As
we’re sharing our experiences and attempting
to form this relationship, safety certainly
becomes a part of it.”
Unger explained that safety awards,
for example, the ones Miller has received
from SC&RA, along with other recognition,
including positive CSA scores, helps to build
the story of a business, which generates trust
with potential customers and even other
companies who are looking to partner with
a company, which ultimately makes good
business sense.
“There’s absolutely a cost factor to
success – to building that culture,” Unger
pointed out, “but there’s also a payoff. And the
safety component is vital to building that trust
component which, especially in specialized
transport and rigging, can mean the difference
between securing and sustaining work, and
losing it – or never getting it in the first place.”
Direct impact
The notion of an increasingly expanding and
competitive industry isn’t lost on Jennifer
Gabel, of JK Crane, who understands the
value of being recognised by her Association
and acknowledged by peers. “The Safety
Awards programme is a great way to foster
safety initiatives because the industry-wide

recognition is an added incentive,” she
explained. “We post our awards to our social
media sites and keep them prominently on
display so that our customers can see them
when they’re in our office.”
Like Unger, Gabel has learned the value
of putting together an effective story for
her business. “In recent years, we’ve had
experiences that indicate it’s becoming
more effective to utilise safety records
when interacting with insurance companies,
potential workers and hopeful clients –
building a narrative,” she added. “Any award is
a bit of a PR moment for us – whether locally
or industry wide via SC&RA. It allows us to
be seen, especially on the local level, which
proves effective for potential business and
hopefully attractive to quality workers who
now have many options to choose from – and
certainly aren’t going to look in the direction of
a poor safety record and reputation.”
Chris Vlk, president at Dobson Industrial,
Inc., echoes Gabel’s thoughts about attracting
insurance companies within a competitive
space. “Having zero recordable injuries in
any given year is a major achievement in our
industry,” he stressed. “Having back-to-back
years is even more impressive – which has a
direct impact on our workers compensation
insurance premiums, where we’ve been able
to negotiate deep discounts, saving us huge
amounts of money.”
Beneath Vlk’s suggested money-saved-

reputation can easily take money out of your
pocket before it was even there. “If you have
a certain number of recordable incidents that
cause your EMR [experience modification
rate] to go up, we know that certain companies
simply won’t do business with you.”
Gabel added that money spent cutting
corners can also come back to haunt you.
“I can’t think of too many scenarios that can
devastate your business financially more than
a lawsuit. Any money you thought you might
be saving, especially on safety, could easily be
wiped out. And you just never know what type
of accident you might have; there are plenty
of factors out of your control in this business
which makes the factors you can control –
safety above everything else – all the more
vital to protecting your workers, the project
and your company. And hopefully this focus
allows you to grow financially as a result.”

Mutual success
Such growth is literally fuelled by safety
culture, according to Jeff Hammons,
president at JHam Group Consulting. “A lot
of companies you might want to work with
will demand this type of high-level execution
of safety culture – you’ve got to pre-qualify
with them first,” he affirmed. “You’ve got to
go through a pretty extensive process in order
to even qualify to bid for their business. And
then, once you’re there, if you win the work,
you’ll be validated by how you execute those
services and represent that culture.”
More and more companies that Hammons
works with are subscribing to this belief, he
said, “Which is why I work with them. The
most successful, profitable way to do business
is to execute in the area of safe performance,
with proper culture development initiatives
in place to sustain it. A culture like this gives
everyone in the organisation a voice and that
only strengthens the business and solidifies
the initiatives that are in place so, as the
culture grows alongside the company, it only
gets stronger in time.”
From an insurance standpoint, Hammons
said companies are wise to produce upstream
initiatives that produce downstream results,
noting that insurance companies look to
establish financial partnerships with safety-
conscious companies where everybody wins
and grows together.
To that end, Joe Doerr, programme

Again, this is born out of a commitment to
safety. “In today’s market, from operators to
drivers, the scenario is pretty much reversed,”
he said. “Now, everyone is hiring, so potential
workers are examining who they want to work
with much more seriously. Your ability to
attract workers who will take your company
to the next level will definitely be impacted by
safety, on every level.”
