ACTIVITY 2
ACTIVITY 2 | Studying an Example Essay Discuss the questions that come
before the example essay with a partner. Then read the essay. Work with a
partner to answer the questions after the essay. In this narrative essay, the
writer tells a story of a humorous language problem he experienced in Japan.

1. What are some words that cause problems for you in English? Why are
they difficult?

Actually there are some words that I personally think are sometimes
mispronounced. Like the word 'know'. I often forget that the word
must be pronounced without the letter 'k' but I always forget...Haha

2. Describe a situation in which you could not express yourself effectively

in English. What did you do?

Maybe by trying to practice my pronunciation more often. And that

tends to make progress for me.

3. In a few sentences, tell what happened in this story. Use your own
words.

There was an English teacher who worked in a small area in Japan, one
day he wanted to buy flour in a grocery store to make bread. However,
he does not have the language vocabulary to express his desires. He
didn’t know what flour was in Japanese. So, he tried to find pictures of
bread on the packaging.

But he didn’t find it. Then he saw his student, immediately he asked him
what is the Japanese vocabulary for flour. However, this time he was
wrong again because flour in Japanese means chrysanthemum flower.
And in the end he came home with an empty hand.

Since then, the writer studied Japanese and vocabulary seriously. This
makes us realize how important it is to learn a language so that we can
overcome communication barriers.

hook is successful? Why or why not?

As I said earlier in answer no. 4 that this essay was very successful in
making me understand how important it is to increase our knowledge of
language vocabulary and general knowledge about unique things in
other countries. So that we know how to communicate well.
