Inequality is a cause of
high blood pressure
Extreme social and financial inequality is an
unacknowledged cause of high blood pressure
(hypertension), independent of all the usual known factors
such as diet and exercise.
It’s apparent even in communities where heart
disease is rare, such as among the Tsimane people
of the Bolivian Amazon.
The Tsimane have been the subject of research for
around 20 years since it was discovered they had some of
the lowest rates of heart disease recorded anywhere in the
world (see page 18). They also live closer to the way we all
lived before industrialization.
Even so, high blood pressure was still seen in the
poorest Tsimane communities, researchers from
Washington State University found.
Although the Tsimane social order is mainly egalitarian,
there was still some inequality, and blood pressure
readings were highest in the communities where
inequality was also more distinct. “It’s bad to be poor, but
it’s also bad to be poorer,” said researcher Adrian Jaeggi.

unpleasant it can be—and unnecessary. Researchers can get just as
much information from our saliva.
The results can also be more accurate, and using the technique could be a
game-changer, especially for people who have a problem with the standard
nasopharyngeal swab.
Saliva tests can be unreliable when blood gets mixed in with the sample, but

Quite a lot off good things happen to you—and your gut—
when you eat green vegetables.
Vegetables contain a type of sugar called
sulfoquinovo ose—known as sulfosugar because it
contains the element sulfur (sulphur)—which
requires speccialized bacteria to break it down.
This process pproduces hydrogen sulfide, a gas
that has strong anti-inflammatory effects at
low doses.
Researcheers from the University of Vienna
have discovered sulfosugar stimulates
the growth of key organisms in the gut
microbiome that aren’t affected by other
sugars. The process has a positive knock-on
effect; it also produces a sulfur compound,
DHPS, tthat acts as an energy source for
other intestinal bacteria.

Don’t just flush your urine away.
A quick look at the color could
tell you if you’re consuming
enough liquids every day
W
e’re supposed to drink around two liters
(3.5 pints) of fluids every day; that’s
around 10 glasses of water, which sounds
like a lot. But our fluid intake can come not just from
water but any beverage such as tea or coffee, and
vegetables and fruit account for 20 percent—that’s
two of the 10 glasses.
Not surprisingly, it can be hard to keep track.
That’s where the color of your urine comes in
(or out). The lighter the shade, the more likely
it is that you’re properly hydrated. Conversely, a
darkish hue suggests you need to be drinking more
(nonalcoholic fluids, of course). Having a mouth
that is constantly dry or feeling tired are two other
tell-tale signs of dehydration.
As fluids are essential for every bodily function,
making sure you have enough every day is
important. Many factors can change the amount we
need to be consuming—our age, sex, activity levels
and whether we live in a hot country can all change
the recommendations—but the two-liter rule is a
good guide.
But how do you know just how light your pee
needs to be to suggest that you’re hydrated? Sounds
like a silly question, but it’s the stuff of graphic
designers and printers who for years have wrestled
over the shades of colors. The ultimate arbiter is
Pantone, which has created a universal standard for
all colors and hues and has even numbered them.
So, they’ve decided to do the same for the color
of your pee (believe it or not). Pantone has been
commissioned by water producer Highland Spring
to come up with a Healthy Pee chart. Of course, the
stunt is designed to get you to drink more Highland
Spring, but if it gets you to look at your pee, it’s served
a purpose.

STAY HYDRATED
CONSIDER HERBS
According to herbalist Meilyr James, owner of the Herbal Clinic in Swansea,
Wales (www.herbalclinic-swansea.co.uk), herbs can encourage circulation to the
peripheral nerves and assist with healing. Use the following as a tincture:
• 3 parts Centella asiatica (Gotu kola), 1:4 tincture
• 2 parts Zanthoxylum americanum (Prickly ash), 1:4 tincture
• 20 drops per 50 mL of Capsicum frutescens (Chili pepper), 1:3 tincture
For example: 30 mL Centella asiatica, 20 mL Zanthoxylum americanum, 20 drops

Note: Tincture of capsicum is extremely strong when neat, so use with caution. It’s not suitable for
those with duodenal ulcer or diarrhea.
