18 DNV GL ©
Benefits of Playlists

 In previous versions of Safeti, there were multiple ways of defining the content of
run rows, meaning you had to learn multiple rules, which could give rise to quality
issues
 Now, one consistent approach can be used to intuitively define which items are
included in a run row and which are not, supported by a contextual GIS view
highlighting your choices

19 DNV GL ©
New workflow (cont.)

20 DNV GL ©
Separated vulnerabilities from Building types*

 A “building” and its “vulnerability” to

hazards were linked in S6.7
 Confusing to some users and meant
similar vulnerabilities could not be
reused across multiple buildings
without creating multiple buildings
 “Buildings” and “vulnerabilities” now
separated
 More intuitive and data saving design
 Users define vulnerabilities and
building separately and link them as
required
 “Building vulnerabilities” are global
and when defined are run for all
studies
*Only available with a 3D Explosions license

21 DNV GL ©
Separated vulnerabilities from Parameter sets

 For risks to people calculations, the

“vulnerability” to hazards were defined
as part of the study parameters
 These have been separated in S72
 Vulnerabilities' are now defined on the
Risk tab
 Helps separate “Risk” and
“Consequence” calculations which
means more efficient handling of study
runs e.g. sensitivity analysis

22 DNV GL ©

Long pipeline risk model

 New model in Safeti 7.2

 Key capabilities include:
– Automatic and configurable pipeline segmentation and event spacing
– Automatic and configurable failure case generation along the pipeline
– Multi-segment valve and inventory interactions
– Safety system event trees for ESD
– Pipe wall thickness failure frequency correlations are available

30 DNV GL ©
Long pipeline risk model: capabilities

 Define your pipeline

– Draw it on a map
– Specify where valves are and the valve properties
– Define sections of the pipeline which differ:
– Elevation
– Pipe wall thickness
– Diameter differences
 Safeti creates a complete pipeline definition containing segments to be modelled
 Create breaches of interest (small, medium, large etc.) which will be modelled for
all sections along the pipeline
 In addition to the systematic breaches you can produce detailed results from a
location of interest along the pipeline

31 DNV GL ©
Modelling pipelines: Key challenges

 Every outcome location has different consequences

Pipeline

Village

32 DNV GL ©
The problems with modelling pipelines

 We need to create individual scenarios for continuously changing release locations

 This requires:
– Pipeline pressure at the release location
– Distance to closure valves
– Local pipe wall thickness
– Local burial depth

 The solution in Safeti is to automate this process

33 DNV GL ©

35 DNV GL ©
Continuously variable scenarios

 We can now calculate release scenarios for every sub-section

 Each sub-section will comprise location specific properties
 Safety systems are modelled, giving rise to cases for:
– Valves close
– Upstream valve fails to close
– Downstream valve fails to close
– Both valves fail to close

Fire Exceedance Curves*

 Capability to generate thermal exceedance

curves added to S72
 Covers all Jet, Pools and Fireballs
 Ability to combine results or show separately
 Can also filter curve data (flux level and
duration)

*Only available with a 3D Explosions license

41 DNV GL ©
Effects in Safeti 3D Explosions*

 Safeti has had the capability to

generate exceedance/hazard frequency
contours for some time
 Process was manual and error prone
(e.g. zeroing out certain input fields)
 Risk effects in Safeti is designed to
make the process much easier
 Simply insert a hazard type and
defines a threshold
 Risk effects are treated in a similar way
to vulnerabilities and modelled for each
 “Effects” are global and when defined
are run for all studies

*Only available with a 3D Explosions license

42 DNV GL ©
Dangerous dose updates

 Number of dangerous dose options

increased to 6
 Previously only 1 level allowed
 NB All 6 levels can be used in
consequence calculations (Phast) but
only 1 in risk calculations
 You can use this for e.g. SLOT and
SLOD reporting

43 DNV GL ©
NFPA68 update

 Predicts the overpressure inside the building given a certain level of venting. This
model is based on NFPA68 guideline.

Abuilding
Avent  Cvent
P
 Here, Avent is the ventilation area, Abuilding the internal surface area of the building,
and P the overpressure developed inside the building (Pa)

 In NFPA68 (2007), currently in Phast, the venting parameter Cvent is defined as a

function of the laminar burning velocity SL of the indoor flammable material.

 The most recent edition of the NFPA68 guidelines (2013) has extended the
definition of the venting parameter as a function of the laminar burning velocity,
the effective hydraulic diameter of the enclosure and its length to diameter ratio.

44 DNV GL ©
NFPA68 update

 NFPA 68 indoor explosion model has

been updated to the 2013 version
 As indicated, calculation basis of the
venting parameter has been extended
to account for:
– Total surface area of obstacles inside
the building
– Aspect ratio of the enclosure (length
to width)
– Height/Diameter of the vent
– Pressure rise
 Previous 2007 version did not need
these inputs

45 DNV GL ©
BLEVE Blast update

 BLEVE Blast model updated to CCPS

2nd Edition
 For explosions close to the ground, the
reflection increases the impact of the
original shock wave
 The shape of the vessel (spherical or
cylindrical) as well as the height
(elevated or grounded) influence the
strength of the reflected wave. This is
typically evaluated using correction
factors
 In the new update, the vessel
characteristics are used to determine
the correction factors that should apply
 The previous model did not account for
this

46 DNV GL ©
BLEVE Blast update

 BLEVE Blast model updated to CCPS

2nd Edition
 Here, vessel dimensions (Elevation,
radius or Height) can have an impact
on the resulting blast wave so these
are now a key input
 NB the calculations are not sensitive to
the vessel inventory

47 DNV GL ©
Export Chart Data to Grid
