EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Science and technology are an integral part of modern life, and as such, it poses
great impacts into different fields and lives. Specifically speaking, science and
technology in education. In this paper, the researcher perceived the impacts of science
and technology in education, and examined the negative and positive views of the effects
of the modern science and technology innovation on the students and the education
system. It relied on several researches about the impacts of science and technology in
education, and used data from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
(PNAS). As expected to what has been hypothesized, the impacts of science and
technology in education has been well-approved rather than the negative feedbacks that
has been a concern for the past years. Findings indicate that due to the modernization and
surge on the wave of trends, science and technology has been keeping up-to-date and so
as the educational systems.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this research report is to perceive the impacts of science and
technology in education. It is to examine the negative and positive views of the effects of
the modern science and technology innovation on the students and the education system.

As defined by Joseph S. Szyliowicz, et al., “Education, discipline that is

concerned with methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments
as opposed to various non-formal and informal means of socialization... Education can be
thought of as the transmission of the values and accumulated knowledge of a society.” As
texts that were produced, education is the process that teaches us humane values and the
process of life. And as society becomes more complex and schools become more
institutionalized, so is the concept of science and the fast wide-ranging development and
innovation in technology.

In Oxford Reference, “Science encompasses the systematic study of the structure

and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment, and
technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.” Whereas, in
Springer Link, “Science is the knowledge that illuminates the way, guides to the correct
path and relieves the stress of worldly duties from the person who owns it. Technology is
the innovation, change, or modification of the natural environment in order to satisfy
perceived human wants and needs. Science needs technology in applying the rules and
procedures and technology uses the science for its development and improvements.”
Nonetheless, science and technology has been connected to each other, and brought
immense change into people lives. Some evidences of its influence have been apparent,
such as the learning content, where before teachers used Manila paper for their learning
tool, but know they can use animations on PowerPoint presentations, videos and other
kinds of advanced content creations to enhance the learning process.

Science embraces every attempt of humans to explore, interpret and

manage the natural world. The purpose of science is to transform the environment
towards improving the general quality of life, thus making the world a better. The
scientific enterprise is one that is challenging and innovative. It blends with technology
which focuses on inventions and problem solving. Consequently, the harmonious
interplay of science, technology and society is the springboard for sustainable
development. It equally facilitates and enhances industrial and technological progress
among the people and within a nation. This consciousness stems into global agitations for
literacy in science and technology.

The Republic Act No. 10533: the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, or
simply known as the K-12 curriculum launched two new levels, grades 11 and 12, in
preparation for college. It included the Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics Strand. This strand emphasizes the disciplines of science, technology,
engineering and mathematics. It provides more understanding on the scientific and
technological matters.

There are two reasons why the researcher chose this topic:

The modern education system heavily relies on the technological advancements

and innovation, such as laptops, iPads, projectors, and etc. It is relevant to know the
profundity and how far schools and the education system can rely on these technologies.

As the research is a STEM student, it is relevant to her study. The scientific and
technological aspects that is evident in her curriculum.

The researcher is conducting this study about the impacts of science and
technology in education to know the depths of its effectiveness. It is also to raise
concerns on the negative effects which is relevant on today's “new normal”.

METHOD

Information for this report was sourced from various secondary sources, all listed
in the Bibliography. Data from publications by the Proceedings of National Academy of
Sciences also proved valuable.

RESULTS

The impact of science and technology in education has always been evident, in
terms of the learning systems, tools and curriculum. A major evidence points to the
adaptation of the "new normal", caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19
pandemic is quickly demonstrating why technology and online education should be a
vital part of teaching and learning.

On the positive effects, which is a partially big 65%, the respondents' reason is
because it contributes more into teaching, it develops the minds of the students and
facilitates learning.
However, the negative impacts, which accumulated to 35%, include distraction
for the learning process, misinformation, promotes laziness and kills creativity in
students.

DISCUSSIONS

Other than the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic proving the importance and
impact of science and technology in education, the K-12 curriculum that has been
implemented in 2016 also posed a great influence in this.
On the positive effects, the respondents' reason is because it contributes more into
teaching, it develops the minds of the students and facilitates learning. Some more
evidences on the positive impacts of science and technology are gaining 21-century
technical skills, improved quality of education, and personalize learning activities and
opportunities.
However, the negative impacts include distraction for the learning process,
misinformation, promotes laziness and kills creativity in students. In this, the findings
suggest that the negative impacts of science and technology in education may drive
students to learn in no direction due to the distractions it may cause. It may also lessen
collaboration and communication, and rather focus on self-centrism.

CONCLUSION

The changes in science and technology over time drive changes and innovations
in industry as companies evolve and take advantage of maturing developments in science
and technology. New technologies and processes can potentially produce new jobs or
occupations. To remain relevant, universities and educational institutions must develop
new programs in response to these new and emerging occupations. Universities respond
to emerging occupations by creating degree and certificate programs needed to train the
workforce of the future.
Technology provides students with easy-to-access information, accelerated
learning, and fun opportunities to practice what they learn. It enables students to explore
new subjects and deepen their understanding of difficult concepts, particularly in STEM.
Importantly, the negative impacts of science and technology may lessen if the students
strive for the betterment and quality of life.
