The current study titled “Emotional Struggles of Social Studies Major

Student School Year 2020-2021” is the study that aims to determine the

emotional state of students and how it affects their learning. To do this, the

study aims to find out the factors that cause their emotional struggle, what

emotional problems they face. Another is how we can tell that a student has a

certain trajectory problem when it comes to emotional. Lastly, to find out the

possible actions that can be taken if a student is going through an emotional

struggle.

In addition, there were a total of ten (10) respondents for this study. The

researcher used a descriptive approach as a research design of the study. The

researchers conducted interview guide questions through the Google form to

gather information that would help our research be more accurate. Based on

the result, it was found that almost all of our selected respondents may have

experienced a problem when it comes to their emotional health, some of them

have been caused by the extreme mental illness of the problems they face

such as : family problems, financial problems, having homework and studying

at the same time, as well as having a lot of school work and punctual

deadlines. Because of the problems mentioned students experience stress,

depression, overthinking, loss of appetite and sometimes looking at emptiness.

Meanwhile, the respondents shared some activities to provide a solution for

other students who are also experiencing emotional problems, according to

them we should just pray to God, cry if we need to release our emotions, we

can also listen of musics such as labor songs and prayer, watching movies

that can also be done with friends, chatting with housemates and doing things

we know will ease our feelings like leisure. From the recommendations shared

by the respondents we gained extra knowledge so that we can give relief to

our problem when it comes to emotional struggles. With the help of this study

we can fully understand the situation of students from Social Studies Major, as

well as other students who are now faced with the new education system

because of the Covid19 pandemic.

This study makes possible recommendations that will help students to

avoid and have adequate knowledge regarding emotional struggles and to

provide solutions for better learning, from problems that may concern family,

financial and school matter. Through this study we prepared possible

recommendations for Social Studies students from Lemery Colleges to prevent

Students Emotional Struggles that affect their academic performance.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This research chapter contains the introduction, statement of the

problem, theoretical framework, conceptual framework, scope and limitations of

the study, significance of the study, and definition of terms.

Page I 2
Introduction

An inverse relationship between emotional struggles and educational

attainment is a well-known phenomenon in the scientific literature of sociology,

epidemiology and psychiatry in society. Despite nearly a hundred researches

on the matter, no agreement has been reached on how the organization is

progressing and supporting. Many studies have shown the impact of

educational attainment on emotional struggles (socially caused) and also, there

is support for the influence of emotional struggles on educational attainment

(social choice). Naturally, this knowledge comes from a lot of research on the

adult population because the level of SES and educational attainment has been

established in recent years. However, there are many factors to investigate the

relationship between emotional struggles and academic performance in

childhood. The social processes caused by childhood depend on the level of

SES and the educational tradition of the family of origin. Equally important,

education is a central part of all childhood, with an educational path starting at

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas

an early age. If a link between emotional struggles and academic performance

is to be found during childhood and adolescence, early recognition and

interventions should be obtained. However, there are many longitudinal,

population-based studies in children and adolescents. As academic

performance is linked to future educational achievements, and emotional

struggles during childhood increase the risk for subsequent emotional

struggles, early intervention is extremely important. Given the multifactorial

etiology of mental illness, and the number of factors that predict educational

attainment, there is reason to assume that the relationship between the two is

complex.

Page I 3
Background of the Study

Emotional struggles is a very interesting issue nowadays, especially to

those students that are facing adolescent period. Most of the time students

cannot focus on their studies because they are struggling emotionally there

were cases that it is because of their family problem, environmental or even

love problems. But whatever the reason it is not a thing or a simple thing that

we can took for granted. That is why the researcher decided to choose this

topic to study and learn more about it. With this the researchers may bring

awareness about the said topic and become an issue that will be resolve in the

near future. We all know that emotional struggles of the students is very

important for them to be able to cope up with their studies, what the

researchers trying to expound is there any factors given on how emotional

struggles is significance to the academic performance of the students. Is there

any variable can explain why this student emotional struggles can be a big

issue to deal with? Furthermore, there are already related topics that have been

studied and the researchers think that this kind of topic will be a great one to

focus on. Imagine that with this study this hidden problem of the students that

been taken for granted for a long time will be solve and give a chance to

elaborate and explore.

Statement of the Problem

This study focuses on determining the significance of Student’s

emotional struggles that affects their academic performance.

1. What are the problems encountered by Social Studies students in

terms of their emotional health?

2. How do students cope with their problems?

3. What are the possible actions that can help students cope with

emotional struggles?

Theoretical Framework

According to Weare, (2010). The concept of school emotional struggles,

while addressing the following two key aspects. First, research in the field has

identified two complementary lines of intervention in school-based emotional

struggles initiatives: programs aimed at enhancing emotional struggles and

well-being by fostering social and emotional competencies and resilience skills,

and schemes targeting the prevention and relief of emotional struggles

difficulties, behavioral issues, and at-risk behaviors.

According to Cefai & Cooper, (2017) Although systematic reviews of

intervention suggest that, for maximum efficacy, programs need both to support

universal emotional struggles promotion and to address social, emotional, and

behavioral problems. Comprehensive framework that outlines in detail the

specific competencies and behaviors targeted by school emotional struggles

Page I 5
interventions is still needed.

According to Waddell et al., (2012) Interventions may be implemented at

the universal level, that is to say, with all students, or at the targeted level, with

students at particular risk of developing, or already manifesting, mild emotional

struggles difficulties. Recent studies suggest that universal preventive programs

are perceived as less stigmatizing. Furthermore, similar effect sizes have been

observed for both universal and targeted prevention programs, indicating that

there is a need for both universal preventive interventions complemented with

targeted interventions. In particular, systematic reviews of universal programs in

children and adolescents demonstrated significant reductions in internalizing

emotional struggles such as stress, anxiety and depression symptoms.

Similarity, studies on the effectiveness of prevention programs for externalizing

problems documented significant reductions in targeted behavioral issues, with

effects lasting through one-year follow-up.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the significance of student’s emotional struggles to

their academic performance in selected students in Lemery Colleges S.Y. 2020

-2021.

The qualitative method of research was used with the interview

questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. For the respondents of

the study, the researchers choose ten (10) respondents from random students

of Lemery Colleges.

Significance of the Study

Study will surely be a great benefit to the following.

The students, the result will provide students the clarity of the importance of

their emotional struggles to their academic performance.

To the teachers, it will help them to guide their students having the knowledge

with the strength This and weakness of their students.

To the parents, it will help them to become aware on their children’s special

needs in terms of emotional struggles support.

Definition of terms

Epidemiology. has been defined in various ways over the years.

Generally speaking, the definition always encom-passed the scope of this

activity at the various stages of medical science history. (AJ Lebrun)

Multifactorial. it is referring to multiple factors in heredity or disease. For

example, traits and conditions that are caused by more than one gene

occurring together are multifactorial, and diseases that are caused by more

than one factor interacting (for example, heredity and diet in diabetes) are
Page I 9
multifactorial. (William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR)

Sensorimotor. the sensorimotor period refers to the earliest stage (birth

to 2 years) in Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. This stage is

characterized as the period of a child’s life when learning occurs through a

child’s sensory and motor interactions with the physical environment. These

interactions are known as circular reactions and are a means of building

schemes in which infants try to repeat a chance event caused by their own

motor activity [1]. Piaget separated his sensorimotor period into six

sensorimotor substages: reflexive schemes, primary circular reactions,

secondary circular reactions, coordination of secondary circular reactions,

tertiary circular reactions, and mental representations. (Kendra Cherry, MS)

Continuum. it is the illustrating the relationships between definitions. We

describe the impact of each of these descriptions upon the attainment of a

sustainable competitive advantage for the firm. The quality definition continuum

can serve as the basis for understanding some principles of total quality

management implementation and success. (KW Seawright)

Onset. in medicine, the first appearance of the signs or symptoms of an

illness. (William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR)

Prohibitive. tending to prohibit or restrain; tending to preclude use or

purchase.

Diathesis. refers to a predisposition or vulnerability for the development

of a pathological state. Diathesis-stress models argue that certain pathological

states or diseases emerge from the combination of a predisposition with

stressful events (Zuckerman, 1999).

Intervene. the act of interfering with the outcome or course especially of

a condition or process (as to prevent harm or improve functioning)

Predominance. the state or condition of being greater in number or

amount.

Internalized. to give a subjective character to specifically: to incorporate

(values, patterns of culture, etc.) within the self as conscious or subconscious

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

According to (Nedregård and Olsen, 2014) Today’s younger generation

represents the largest group of students in history. The transition from

adolescence into young adulthood involves major changes in several areas –

financial, housing, social, and emotional – and this transition period can cause

relational challenges that some young adults experience as stressful. It has

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
also been maintained that the proportion of students who experience their

student life as mentally stressful is increasing.

Michaela C. Pascoe, Sarah E. Hetrick and Alexandra G. Parker (2019)

published an article about “Students in secondary and tertiary education

settings face a wide range of ongoing normative stressors, which can be

defined as normal day to day hassles such as ongoing academic demands.

Accordingly, secondary/high school (defined here as junior/lower

secondary education and senior/upper secondary education)] (UNESCO, 2012)

and tertiary (defined here as post-secondary education) (UNESCO, 2012)

students commonly self-report experiencing ongoing stress relating to their

education, which we refer to as academic-related stress, such as pressure to

Page I 12
achieve high marks and concerns about receiving poor grades”.

Verouden et al ( 2010),Stated that non-help-seeking behavior might be

the explanation for the discrepancy between the documented treatment records

and reported health problems of students. According to research on health

problems among Dutch students, a significant number of students does not

seek professional help for their health-related problems. Recent studies support

these findings and additionally found that non-help-seeking behavior is reported

especially by students suffering from emotional struggles complaints.

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
According to Manwell et al.,( 2015) There is no general agreement on

the definition of emotional struggles. For a long time, the term emotional

struggles has been used as a euphemism for mental illness. However,

emotional struggles and mental illness are regarded as distinct constructs

nowadays and two main perspectives differentiating between emotional

struggles and illness are available in the literature.

Scheid and Brown (2010) claimed that the continuum approach

considers that emotional struggles and mental illness are the two opposite

poles of a continuum. Thus, there are various degrees of health and illness

between these poles, with most of us falling somewhere in between. The

categorical approach, on the other hand, represents emotional struggles and

illness as a dichotomy. People who manifest mental illness symptoms would

belong to that category and labeled correspondingly, while those absent of

these symptoms can be considered as mentally healthy. Page I 13

ACMH (2013) stated that children and youth with emotional struggles

challenges sometimes experience difficulty at school for a variety of reasons.

ACMH receives frequent calls from parents whose kids are struggling to be

successful or sometimes not even being allowed to stay at school due to un-

addressed emotional struggles needs. Accessing the services that children and

youth may need to help them better manage and support their emotional

struggles needs at school can be quite challenging. We hope this section will

help.

According to Wigfield [Link] (2016), Achievement motivation is not a single

construct but rather subsumes a variety of different constructs like motivational

beliefs, task values, goals, and achievement motives.

Vuori and Okkonen, (2012) stated that motivation helps to share

knowledge through an intra-organizational social media platform which can help

the organization to reach its goals and objectives.

As claimed by Sparfeldt and Rost, (2011) Assessing students’ goals

and their achievement motives with reference to a specific subject might result

in higher associations with domain-specific achievement criteria .

Page I 14
Local Literature

Velasquez, 2014 stated that Prohibitive economic conditions and the

inaccessibility of emotional struggles services limit access to emotional

strugglescare in the Philippines. Further, perceived or internalized stigma has

been shown to be a barrier to help-seeking behaviors in Filipinos.

Lally et al, 2013 stated that Just as is the case in Western population,

there is a cultural drive to ‘save face’ when there is a threat to or loss of one's

social position, and as such Filipinos may have difficulty in admitting to

emotional struggles or seeking help. There is a strong sense of family in the

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
Philippines and so, when problems are thought to be socially related, Filipinos

will turn to family and peer networks before seeking medical help.

According to Duran, (2020) To lower the increasing suicide rate and

prevent young people from taking their own lives away, we need to raise

awareness about emotional struggles in our schools. Learning about emotional

struggles illnesses will leave a positive impact on the students struggling: they'll

learn about therapy and how to treat their problem.

According to Garcia 2018, Emotional struggles includes our emotional,

psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It

also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy

choices. Emotional struggles is important at every stage of life, from childhood

Page I 15
and adolescence through adulthood.

As DOH stated that Children’s emotional struggles can affect young

people in a variety of ways to varying degrees in the school environment. One

child’s symptoms may be really hard to manage at school while another child

with the same condition may not have much difficulty. In addition, like all of us,

kids with emotional struggles challenges have good days and bad, as well as,

times periods when they are doing really well and times when their emotional

struggles symptoms become more difficult to manage.

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
Children with emotional struggles needs often need a variety of types of

supports in school for them to be successful. For example, a child with

hyperactivity may benefit from working some activity into their daily classroom

routine. A child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder might benefit from their

teachers being trained to interact with them in a certain way. A young person

who struggles with disorganization might be helped by being taught planning

skills. Children who may become aggressive and those who get overly anxious

may benefit from exploring what things lead up to those feelings and being

taught strategies to recognize when it is happening and things to do to avoid

the problem from escalating.

Michael P Sy, 2019 stated that, emotional struggles care has recently been

a priority health program in the Philippines as evident in the present lobbying of

the “Emotional struggles Act of 2016“. In spite of these developments, the

existence and quality of interprofessional collaboration among Filipino

Emotional struggles Professionals remain unexamined. Page I 16

Rene Samaniego, 2019, stated that National information on emotional

struggles services in the Philippines indicates that there are substantial gaps

and inconsistencies in the delivery of emotional strugglescare. The recently

enacted Emotional struggles Act legislation provides a platform for the delivery

of comprehensive and integrated emotional struggles services. However, there

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
remain many challenges in the provision of accessible and affordable emotional

strugglescare.

Page I 17
Foreign Studies

According to (Mehta et al., 2015) important efforts to bring together the

best evidence about emotional struggles have been done and raised the

challenge of agreeing about fundamental issues in the field such as the

definition of emotional struggles and other related concepts (Mehta et al.,

2015). According to WHO, emotional struggles is understood not as a mere

absence of illness, but rather, in a broader sense, as a state of well-being in

which individuals develop their abilities, face the stress of daily life, perform

productive and fruitful work, and contribute to the betterment of their community

(WHO, 2004). This definition served as the basis for WHO Emotional struggles

Action Plan, 2013–2020, which incorporates the concepts of emotional

struggles promotion, mental illness prevention and treatment, and rehabilitation.

Particularly, developmental aspects of children and young people, including, for

instance, the ability to manage thoughts, emotions, as well as to build social

relationships, and the aptitude to learn, are emphasized in the plan as critical

facets to be tackled in emotional struggles interventions.

Hayhoe, Leach, Turner, Bruin, and Lawrence (2012) examined spending

habit differences among college students and included financial stress as a

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
variable in their model. Financial stress was measured by summing the number

of positive responses to seven financial stressors, such as “not able to save for

an emergency” and “not able to pay utilities.” Hayhoe et al. (2012) found that

the number of good financial behaviors was negatively associated with number

of financial stressors.

According to the study of Mohammad Mofatteh (2021) “Emotional

problem is one of the most significant determinants of life quality and

satisfaction. Poor mental health is a complex and common psychological

problem among university and college students in developed and developing

countries. Different psychological and psychiatric studies conducted in multiple

developed and developing countries across the past decades have shown that

prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression (SAD) is higher among university

Page I 18
and college students compared with the general population.

According to world emotional struggles survey results, 50% of psychiatric

disorders exists by age 14 (Sorel, 2010). Emotional struggles, being

developmental in nature and aetiology, are best addressed through prevention

measures during early age. Educational institutions, being the students’ primary

environment during their formal educational years, should establish systems,

wherein actual and potential emotional struggles among the youth can be

addressed. The link between emotional struggles of students, and academic

engagement (Reis, Hoppe, & Schröder, 2015; Roth, 2013), and school

environment (Chen, Romero, & Karver, 2016).

However, Larivière et al. (2013) found that the productivity of the

United States on emotional struggles research has dropped significantly and

remained stable in other two English speaking countries (the United Kingdom

and Canada) since 1980.

Anspaugh DJ, et al. (2011). Stated that breathing exercises are one way to

relax. . Being relaxed can help ease stress. It can also relieve anxiety,

depression, and sleep [Link] relax means to calm the mind, the body, or

both. Relaxing can quiet your mind and make you feel peaceful and calm. Your

body also reacts when you relax. For example, your muscles may be less tense

and more flexible. There are lots of ways to relax. Some ways are designed to

relax your mind and some to relax your body. But because of the way the mind

and body are connected, many relaxation methods work on both the mind and
Page I 19
the body.

According to Elizabeth Scott (2020). When we face stressors in life, we

can carry physical and psychological tension, and these tensions can feed off

of one another. Feeling physically tense can increase your psychological and

emotional tension, and vice [Link], relaxing your body physically

can help relieve psychological stress, and relaxing your mind can help you to

physically relax and release tension in your body.1 When your stress response

stress and hope that stressors pass quickly. It's not uncommon to be caught

off-guard by stress. It's important to know when you have too much stress and

According to Mayo Clinic Relaxation techniques are a great way to help

with stress management. Relaxation isn’t only about peace of mind or enjoying

According to (Timimi, 2010; Summerfield, 2013). On the contrary, the

number of publications from European countries and the five major emerging

national economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), has

experienced remarkable growth, and collectively account nearly for half of the

publications in the field. Still, the predominance of knowledge generated in the

developed world today, which tends to be grounded on psychiatric and

psychological perspectives, might be eclipsing non-traditional views on

emotional struggles and well-being that are popular in other regions of the

world and, therefore, limiting the development of effective initiatives that align

better with local norms, values, and needs in LMICs.

According to Melissa R Garabiles, 2019 Depression and anxiety are

comorbid. From the network model perspective, comorbidity is due to direct

interactions between depression and anxiety symptoms. These interacting

symptoms are called bridge symptoms, suppression of which is expected to halt

other symptoms. This study investigates the network structure of depression,

anxiety, and bridge symptoms in a sample of migrant domestic workers, who

are among the most vulnerable and marginalized groups of workers.

According to (Cruz, 2013; Salaverria, 2013; Sauler, 2013; Tomacruz,

Philippines. The social and emotional struggles aspects of student welfare in

tertiary level institutions have gained more attention from stakeholders of

education in the Philippines, wherein college students are still considered in the

adolescent youth bracket. News reports have revealed college students

involved in violent acts, such as murder transpiring within (GMA News, 2012)

and outside university premises (Baclay, 2010; Pedrosa, 2013). Also, there is

an increase in incidence of suicide committed by college students through

various forms such as jumping from a building (Manila Bulletin, 2013) and

shooting self with a gun (PHnews, 2013). Experts have reported that there is

one suicide referral made per day among the youth.

According to (Tomacruz, 2018). Commentaries from various journalistic

publications in the Philippines argue that these destructive exhibitions of social

and mental problems among the youth can be attributed to both social and

academic factors, and that addressing these problems requires a holistic

approach coming from various social institutions such as the family, the school

and policy-making bodies. Page I 22

WHO, 2014 stated that there are only two tertiary care psychiatric

hospitals: The National Center for Emotional struggles in Mandaluyong City,

Metro Manila (4200 beds) and the Mariveles Mental Hospital in Bataan, Luzon

(500 beds). There are 12 smaller satellite hospitals affiliated with the National

Center for Emotional struggles which are located throughout the country.

Overcrowding, poorly functioning units, chronic staff shortages and funding

constraints are ongoing problems, particularly in peripheral facilities. There are

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.

no dedicated forensic hospitals, although forensic beds are located at the

National Center for Emotional struggles.

The National Alliance 2014, on Mental Illness estimates that one in five

people live with some sort of mental disorder or disease. Despite the fact that

the average age of early signs of mental illness is 14, most individuals don't

seek help until adulthood. Underlining the seriousness is the fact that 60

percent of high school students with mental illness don't graduate.

Philippines Statistics Authority, 2010 stated that there is little

epidemiological evidence on mental disorders in the Philippines; however,

some important data are available. For example, 14% of a population of 1.4

million Filipinos with disabilities were identified to have a mental disorder. The

National Statistics Office identified that mental illness is the third most prevalent

form of morbidity, however the finding that only 88 cases of emotional struggles

were reported for every 100 000 of the population is likely an underestimate of
Page I 23
the true extent of these issues.

According to Cramer’s model 2016, of help-seeking behavior posited

that self-concealment, social support, attitudes toward counseling, and problem

severity are essential in understanding individuals’ intent to seek counseling.

Path analysis results from 359 Filipino university students indicated that the

original Cramer’s model did not achieve the requisites of good model fit and
LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.

that social support was not associated with problem severity. After adding loss

of face to Cramer’s model, we found positive associations with self-

concealment and intent to seek counseling and a negative association with

attitudes toward counseling. Multiple group analysis of the expanded Cramer’s

model indicated that, apart from social support and problem severity intercept

differences, path coefficients, intercepts, and residual variances were invariant

across gender. The previously nonsignificant social support to problem severity

path is now significant. The addition of loss of face and accounting for gender

differences in social support and problem severity improved the model fit of

Cramer’s model.

According to Melissa R Garabiles 2019, Electronic mental (e-mental)

health interventions can address emotional struggles needs of different

populations. Cultural adaptation of these interventions is crucial to establish a

better fit with the cultural group and to achieve better treatment outcomes. This

study aimed to describe the cultural adaptation of the World Health

Organization’s e-emotional struggles program Step-by-Step for overseas

Filipino workers. We used a framework which posits that cultural adaptation

should enhance (1) relevance, wherein the cultural group can relate with the

content;(2) acceptability, where the cultural group will not find any element

offensive;(3) comprehensibility, where the program is understandable; and (4)

completeness, wherein the adapted version covers the same concepts and

constructs as the original program. We aimed to have English and Filipino and

male and female versions.

Synthesis of Reviewed Related Literature

After the researchers read and understand the review related literature

and studies the researchers come up to the conclusion that the student’s

emotional struggles has a great impact to their academic performance. In a way

that the stability of student’s emotional struggles is directly proportional to their

academic performance, if the students having difficulties on their academic

performance it is simply means that they are struggling emotionally. Just like

what Duran said “to lower the increasing suicide rate and prevent young people

from taking their own lives away, we need to raise awareness about emotional

struggles in our schools. Learning about emotional struggles illnesses will leave

a positive impact on the students struggling: they'll learn about therapy and how

to treat their problem”. We must spread the awareness on emotional struggles

because it is not that simple and it must not took for granted for the reason that

it is a big existing problems nowadays. A lot of students didn’t finish their

studies because they are not aware of emotional struggles there were cases

that students are at the stage of extreme depression and choose to end their

lives knowing that suicide is the best solution to their problems. In order to

prevent this to happen again and again the researchers highly recommend to

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design used, sources of data

instrumentation and ethical consideration.

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive method of research. It involves the

analysis of the significance of student's emotional struggles to their academic

performance of the selected Students in Lemery Colleges S.Y. 2020 – 2021.

The main focus of this study is to gather insights from people’s thoughts which

may provide the basis for the researchers to make a survey instruments for use

in a qualitative study. The descriptive research design aim to accurately and

systematically describe the population, situation or even phenomenon. It can

answer what, where, when and how questions but not why questions. A

descriptive research design can use a wide variety of research methods to

investigate one or more variables.

Tradition and Inquiry of Data

qualitative research.

The goal of descriptive research is to describe phenomenon and its

characteristics. This research is more concerned with what rather than how or

why something has happened. Therefore, observation and survey tools are

often used to gather data (Gall, Gall, & Borg, 2017). In another explanation

regarding the utilization of descriptive method, Descriptive research is a type of

research method which explains the existing phenomenon under the study. In

this regard, the data collected through investigating the effects of the

phenomenon on the investigated population

This inquiry was used by the researchers to describe the emotional

struggles of the social studies students school year 2020-2021. It would help in

achieving the objectives and purposes of this study. The research involved the

use of structured questionnaire to collect the data from the participants.

Questionnaires are prepared to use as researcher’s guide towards the

satisfaction of research objective.

Generation Method Page I 27

Interview was used to achieve the objective and purposes of this

research. An interview is generally qualitative research techniques involves

asking open-ended questions to converse with respondents and collect elicit

data about a subject. The qualitative research interview seeks to describe and

the meanings of central themes in life world of the subject of this study.

Interviews are particularly useful for getting the story behind a participant’s

experience. The interviewer can pursue in-depth information around the topic

interviews may be useful as follow-up to certain respondents to questionnaire,

to further investigate their responses.

Furthermore, a research would utilize interview. It would help to have

better understanding and explore research subjects’ opinions, experiences,

phenomenon. Interview questionnaire are open ended questions so that in-

depth information will be collected from the participants. The primary data

collection method is through in-depth interviews

Sources of Data

While data collection and data analysis were intricately woven together

throughout this phase of the study. The primary sources of data for this study is

the selected students of Lemery Colleges.

Participants

In the research methodology, the participants are typically a sample of

the population you want to study. You are probably not going to study all

school children, but you may sample from the population of school children.

You need to include information about the characteristics of the population in

chapter three.

And the chosen participants of the researchers for this study are ten

(10) random of Social Studies students of Lemery Colleges S.Y. 2020 – 2021.

Instrumentation

The instrumental used was a research-made questionnaire check list to

gather the needed data. The draft of the questionnaire was drawn out based on

the researcher’s readings, previous studies, professional literature, published

and unpublished thesis relevant to the study. In the preparation of the

instrument, the requirements in the designing of good data collection instrument

were considered. For instance, statement describing the situations or issues

pertaining was toned down to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of

the respondents. Open-ended options were provided to accommodate to free

formatted views related to the topics or issues. In this way, the instrument is

authorized to obtain valid responses of the students. Preference for the issue of

the structured questionnaire is premised on several research assumptions such

as a) cost of being a least expensive means of gathering data, b) avoidance of

personal bias, c) less pressure for immediate response, and giving the

respondents a greater feeling of anonymity. In the end, it encouraged open

responses to sensitive issues at hand. In addition, the instrument was validated

by few consultant and former professors before it laid on to the study.

Ethical Consideration

The importance of selecting an appropriate research methodology and

methods is the importance of the ethical considerations around conducting the

research. In this special issue of student’s emotional struggles. Some ethical

dilemmas commonly encountered as an “insider research” including the power

differential and ongoing relationships with participants it is fundamentally

important that human research ethics approval has been obtained.

Emotional Health

The researchers have formulated questionnaire that was answered by

ten (10) Social Studies Students from Lemery Colleges School Year 2020-

struggles. The following themes are generated from the responses of the

participants based on the interpretation of data gathered of the researchers.

Themes for research question 1:

Emotional Problem

According to the study of Mohammad Mofatteh (2021) “Emotional

problem is one of the most significant determinants of life quality and

satisfaction. Poor mental health is a complex and common psychological

problem among university and college students in developed and developing

countries. Different psychological and psychiatric studies conducted in multiple

developed and developing countries across the past decades have shown that

prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression (SAD) is higher among university

and college students compared with the general population.

The study aims to explain the importance emotional problems as problems

encountered by Social Studies students in terms of their emotional health. The

findings revealed based on the answers gathered from the respondents, they

are all experiencing emotional problem which makes it an obstacle for the

development of their mental health. In this study, the various factors involved in

the emotional problem will also be explained based on the answer given by the

respondents.

Respondent 5 stated when he "suddenly started crying, my mood

changed, and didn't go out of the room and was felt without eating" he could tell

that he was already struggling emotionally. Respondent 6 said that he can say

that he is already struggling emotionally "when someone raising their voice

talking to me, I fell bad and feel uncomfortable if someone humiliating me".

Respondent 8 and Respondent 9 said that they can say that they are is already

struggling emotionally because "sometimes I'm being moody, I'm feeling

Page I 33
worthless and guilt in something".

School Works

Michaela C. Pascoe, Sarah E. Hetrick and Alexandra G. Parker (2019)

published an article about “Students in secondary and tertiary education

settings face a wide range of ongoing normative stressors, which can be

defined as normal day to day hassles such as ongoing academic demands.

Accordingly, secondary/high school (defined here as junior/lower

secondary education and senior/upper secondary education)] (UNESCO, 2012)

and tertiary (defined here as post-secondary education) (UNESCO, 2012)

students commonly self-report experiencing ongoing stress relating to their

education, which we refer to as academic-related stress, such as pressure to

achieve high marks and concerns about receiving poor grades”.

Respondent 2 clearly stated for him that "The no. 1 factor is when I

follow the school works one after the other and at the same time it makes me

feel uncomfortable even though I want to rest I think I have a lot to do why I just

relax, stress-laxing comes in where I get more stressed when I rest because it's

worse I think about the task and overthink that I might not finish because I just

relax ". Similar to the opinion of Respondent 5 , Respondent 7, Respondent 8

and Respondent 10, according to them "when homework and school are too
Page I 34
much, excessive number of tasks or requirements and work and academics.

Through the opinion of the respondents it was found that major factor

causing the emotional struggle of Social Studies Students from Lemery

Colleges School Year 2020-2021 is having a lot of work for learning and giving

sequence work, despite having a lot of work at school, it also affects the

employment of some students, who have to work to meet some financial

problems regarding their education and some family responsibilities, also

having they have a problem regarding time management in response to the

household chores assigned to them.

Economic

Hayhoe, Leach, Turner, Bruin, and Lawrence (2012) examined spending

habit differences among college students and included financial stress as a

variable in their model. Financial stress was measured by summing the number

of positive responses to seven financial stressors, such as “not able to save for

an emergency” and “not able to pay utilities.” Hayhoe et al. (2012) found that

the number of good financial behaviors was negatively associated with number

of financial stressors.
LEMERY COLLEGES, INC. Page I 35
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
Very few studies have examined factors related to the likelihood of

reporting financial stress. Brougham, Zail, Mendoza, and Miller (2013)

examined different sources of stress, including academics, financial, family,

social, and daily hassles, but the primary focus of their study was to identify

coping behavior among students. They found that college women were more

likely to report financial stress than college men (Brougham et al., 2013).

Anticipated debt has also been shown to be a strong predictor of financial

stress among medical students (Morra, Regehr, & Ginsburg, 2013). Archuleta,

Dale, and Spann (2013) found that among college students, higher levels of

financial satisfaction were significantly and negatively related to financial

anxiety.

Just like the simple student, a select group of respondents also said that

one of the problems they have that causes emotional struggle is the economic

problem or financial problem. According to respondent 6 "the factor that

contributes to his emotional struggle is the problem of money", which is not new

for students who experience poverty. As a result, some students are forced to

work in conjunction with their studies to meet their financial needs regarding

their education. We cannot deny that this is a problem that affects the

emotional struggle not only for students because even our country is facing it,

yet our Government continues to take action to solve some problems such as of

the aforementioned.

Relaxation

Anspaugh DJ, et al. (2011). Stated that breathing exercises are one way

to relax.

But because of the way the mind

and body are connected, many relaxation methods work on both the mind and

the body.

According to Elizabeth Scott (2020). When we face stressors in life, we

can carry physical and psychological tension, and these tensions can feed off

of one another. Feeling physically tense can increase your psychological and

emotional tension, and vice [Link], relaxing your body physically

can help relieve psychological stress, and relaxing your mind can help you to

physically relax and release tension in your body.1 When your stress response

is no longer triggered, it becomes far easier to approach challenges in a

proactive, peaceful way. Learning to master techniques that enable both types

cost, pose little risk, and can be done nearly anywhere

Upon answering the questionnaire the respondents see it themselves

that they are really experiencing emotional struggles and the things they usually

do when they are struggling emotionally is to pray listen to music and relaxing

themselves and thank to their family and friends. Just like what respondent 2

responded ,What I usually do is listen to music and cry because I feel better

when I do that and I'm motivated to keep going, and I say in my mind "you're

going to cry all that now, later we'll get up and start again".Another is, go to the

amusing environment go to the cozy place where you can see the green

environment and hear the birds chirping.

The researchers found out that in order for the respondents to cope up

with their problems they usually listen to music go for a nature tripping, talk to
Page I 38
their family and friends and specially relaxing their mind and body.

Motivation in Life

According to Wigfield [Link] (2016), Achievement motivation is not a single

construct but rather subsumes a variety of different constructs like motivational

beliefs, task values, goals, and achievement motives.

Vuori and Okkonen, (2012) stated that motivation helps to share

knowledge through an intra-organizational social media platform which can help

the organization to reach its goals and objectives.

As claimed by Sparfeldt and Rost, (2011) Assessing students’ goals

and their achievement motives with reference to a specific subject might result
Page I 39
in higher associations with domain-specific achievement criteria.

The respondents has seen that the different motivations in life may help

them to overcome their problems in their mental health. Respondent 2 stated

that “always think positively or be weak as long as you don't let these

emotional struggles kill your brain and heart. Don't give up when you know your

life still has a destination." Similarly, Respondent 3 mentioned that the “When

you are experiencing an emotional struggle, calm yourself first, do not think

that you are no longer capable because God has not given you a test without

a solution. When you experience that, go through prayer, don't be alone, be

open with friends so that they can help you ease your feelings and you will

just think. You can do that because in every fight you have with you, God will

not leave you, you can get through that just trust him. "Also Respondent 7

briefly mentioned that " Find someone to talk to because it's a big help if you

can pour out what you're feeling instead of just holding back, it's more painful in

the chest when you're on your own. And find a place in your home or

somewhere to think. " Respondent 5 said that “Find someone to talk to because

it’s because it’s a big help, if you can pour out what you’re feeling instead of just

holding back, it’s more painful in the chest when yo’re on your own. And find a

place in your home to think. According to Respondent 9, “My only advice is

don’t cry or be weak until you let these emotional struggles kill your brain and

heart. Don't give up when you know your life still has a destination. “Also about

the thought of Respondent 4, “that the advice that I can give to the students

who struggling emotionally is to never give up because these problems will

make us to be stronger individual. It is important to not giving up because it

teaches us to have a valuable lesson in life. Respondent 6 said that “Find

someone to talk to because it's a big help if you can pour out what you're

feeling instead of just holding back, it's more painful in the chest when you're on

your own. And find a place in your home or somewhere to think”. Respondent 1

stated that “Be strong and always think positively. Life must go on. Never let the

negativity reigns on your life”. According to Respondent 8 “For me, in order for

us to overcome this, we just need to be strong, no matter how difficult the

situation is, we need to not send thoughts that we know. We have nothing good

to do in our emotional health. Let's just talk to friends and people around us so
Page I 40
that we forget the things that cause us problems or stress”.

The researchers discovered that the different motivations in life may help

the student's to overcome their problems in their emotional health. The

participants realized that giving simple motivation to the students may them to

control their emotional health problems for their performances. The

researchers have analyzed that students should not struggle in silence, they

can be unsilent. They can live with a emotional struggles conditions, as long as

they open up to somebody about.

categories that emerged from the data were augmented by literature, including

literature from the internet.

The purpose of this study was to identify the Emotional Struggles of

Social Studies Primary Students of ten (10) selected Social Studies students at

Lemery Colleges, in order to identify the students were asked to answer six (6)
Page I 42
research questions.

1. What are the problems encountered by Social Studies students in terms

of their emotional health?

2. How do students cope with their problems?

3. What are the possible actions that can help students cope with emotional

struggles?

By answering this question, the study achieved the following objectives:

 to describe the emotional struggles experienced by students from the

Social Studies Major.

 to gain an understanding of their experiences.

Summary of Data

The findings were discussed in accordance with five (5) themes that

emerged from the data:

THEME 1: Emotional Problem

THEME 2: School Works

THEME 3: Economic

THEME 4: Relaxation

THEME 5: Motivation in Life

Page I 43

The Themes and their Implications

THEME 1: Emotional Problem, was experienced by the participants due to

several reasons such as family problem, it is really difficult to focus on learning

especially if they have family problems. Proper time management and

housework are needed in this time of pandemic. Participants experience

problems such as financial which adds a lot of thinking for them, this is because

of the crisis of facing Corona virus pandemic. Many have lost their jobs and

some of the respondents have to work at the same time to meet the financial

need for learning such as load and to purchase equipment that will be used to

keep pace with online learning. This also cause emotional problems thinking for

sequential and sometimes piled up school work. Stress, anxiety, depression,

overthinking, disappointment, discourage and health problems are some of the

problems faced by the respondents.

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas Page I 44

THEME 2: This theme is about school activities that present emotional

problems to the respondents. Based on the responses of the participants they

develop an emotional problem when the tasks are simultaneous or having

multiple tasks. This becomes a problem for them because they have to

manipulate their time for study and for household chores. And because it is in

online learning, giving a short time for the deadline also causes them a

problem. here is the statement of the participants according to this theme: think

about the task, school works are too much, excessive number of task and

requirements, activities and the deadline.

THEME 3: On the economic theme, here comes the problem faced by the

respondents when it comes to financial, especially and we are now facing the

crisis in the city of Covid19 many have lost their jobs, some of the respondents

SUMMARY

This study used a semi-structured interview, in relation to which poorly

structured interview is the most popular interview technique with individuals,

and it is a frequent and important tool at the stage of planning. of an SSWM

intervention. Structured interviews provide a more open framework, allowing for

concentrated, conversational two-way discussions. They can be used in both

sending and receiving data.

This study identifies the common problems experienced by Social

Studies Students when it comes to emotional health, it also identifies the factors

that cause the development of emotional problems and also explains if how can

it be said that they are struggling emotionally. In the data collection there were
LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas
COLLEGE DEPARTMENT
about three (3) themes obtained by the data, (a) Emotional Problems (b)

School Works (c) Economic.

This study also pointed out the ways respondents react when they

experience emotional struggles as well as, who are the people they often

approach when experiencing emotional problems and how they help them. A

one (1) theme derived from data interviews that creates secondary research
Page I 46
questions, (d) Relaxation.

The third question in this research is to identify possible action that can

be taken to cope with emotional struggles. In this study respondents provided

advice for other students experiencing emotional struggle. In gathering the data

interviews one (1) theme was captured (e) Motivation in Life.

Recommendation

Based on the responses of the participants, the researchers is able to

form the following recommendations:

1. School and institutions could provide seminars that aims to informed and

improved as well as can help students overcome emotional problems. In

this way, students will be well informed on how they are going to face

emotional struggles.
LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas

2. Encourage the students to learn more about managing time and

manipulating it by doing school works and chores at the same time. This

way, students won’t feel more stressed because of simultaneous

activities and deadlines because they already know how to manage their

time properly.

3. Student can apply for scholarships in order for them to ease their

financial problem.

4. Students should focus on thinking positive and being relaxed when faced
Page I 47
with emotional problems.

5. Encourage students to be more motivated in life. This way they will feel

more relax and free from anxiety as well as it would be helpful in

overcoming emotional problems.

6. Further research must be done in the form of quantitative research. This

way, the researcher can determine if the Social Studies students has

emotional struggle. Also, the future research can help identify if there is a

need for action plan in order to addressed student’s emotional struggles.

Conclusions

Most of the findings that were derived from the data interview are

assessed with the experiences. Meaning, the participants have their own

struggles and problems about emotions. According to Center for Parent

LEMERY COLLEGES, INC.
Bonifacio St., Bagong Sikat, Lemery Batangas

Information and Resources (2019), emotional struggle is a condition exhibiting

inability to learn, maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships, inappropriate

types of behavior, mood of unhappiness or depression and a tendency to

develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school

problems.

Emotional struggles are problems due to various causes such as family

and health problems, school works and financial. Students usually feel more

emotionally unstable due to these reasons. In general, emotional struggles are

Page I 48
experienced by the students.

In relation to this, these are the themes that are related to the research

questions; (a) Emotional Problem, (b) School Works and (c) Economic, (d)

Relaxation and lastly (e) Motivation in Life. As the researchers, from the themes

that were derived and to other themes that was collected it answers the

research questions that the students have Emotional Struggle and it results in

disturbance in emotional health as well as in other aspect of their life.
