Base material data

Concrete compressive strength, f’c = psi/MPa
Is f’c less than the minimum allowed 2500 psi (17 MPa)? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, then code requirements do not apply and anchor design is not in compliance with, Section
17.6.5.2.5.
Is f’c greater than the maximum allowed; 10,000 psi (70 MPa)? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, then the 10,000 psi (70 MPa) must be used in the calculations to satisfy the code design
requirements, Section 17.3.1.
Base Material Thickness, ha = in./mm

Strength reduction factor for anchor

Tension,  = Shear,  =
Note: Reduction factors for ductile steel elements are different from those for brittle steel elements per
Section 17.5.3, Table 17.5.3(a).
Is supplementary reinforcement provided? Yes/No
Note: If No, strength reduction factors used are per Section 17.5.3 Table 17.5.3(b).

General anchor data

Is anchor torqued? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, minimum edge distance is 6da, otherwise minimum cover requirements per ACI 318, Section
20.5.1 must be satisfied.
If anchor does not produce splitting and is not torqued, it may receive a cover less than required by
Section 20.5.1.3 and 20.5.1.4, by substituting the actual anchor diameter, da, in calculations, by a
smaller diameter, da`, that meets the cover calculation requirements of Section 20.5.1.3 and
20.5.1.4

Center-to-center spacing between anchors, s = in./mm

Note: Minimum spacing is 4da if anchor not torqued and 6da if anchor is torqued. If this requirement is
not satisfied, then splitting may occur unless supplemental reinforcement is provided, Section
17.9.2.
Minimum distance from anchor shaft center to the edge of concrete, ca1 = in./mm

Anchor subjected to tension force

Is steel strength checked? Yes/No
Is concrete breakout strength of anchor in tension checked? Yes/No
Is s < 3hef? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, anchors must be considered as group anchors in design, Section 17.5.1.3.1.

American Concrete Institute – Copyrighted © Material – www.concrete.org

3

Is s < 1.5hef from minimum three edges? Yes/No

Note: If Yes, then hef used for calculations is the larger of ca,max/1.5 and s/3, Section 17.6.2.1.2.
Is anchor reinforcement provided? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, concrete breakout failure is precluded and calculations per Section 17.6.2 are not required.

Note: Tested headed studs, headed bolts, and hooked bolts must have pullout strength in uncracked
concrete at least equal to 1.4 the calculated pullout strength in cracked concrete.

Is hef > 2.5ca1 and s < 6ca1? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, group action must be considered, Section 17.6.4.2.
If required, is reinforcement provided against side-face blowout? Yes/No
Note: If No, engineer to revise design and provide reinforcement against side-blowout. Side-face blowout
force can be estimated at 25% of the tensile capacity of the anchor steel and reinforcement must be
provided to arrest tensile failure of the concrete due to lateral bursting forces at anchor heads near
the free surface. The diameter of the side-face blowout cone is about six times the edge distance.
Spiral reinforcement is recommended. Limited studies have indicated that confining reinforcement,
ties at anchor heads, increased local side-face blowout failure load.

Is anchor shear strength checked? Yes/No

American Concrete Institute – Copyrighted © Material – www.concrete.org

4

Note: For cast-in headed bolts and hooked bolts the anchor shear strength must be reduced by a factor of

must be reduced by an additional factor of 0.8, Section 17.7.1.2.1.

Is the group of anchors welded to a steel plate? Yes/No
Note: If Yes, ca1 is the distance from the edge to the farthest anchor row that is selected as critical. Steel
plate thickness must be the greater of 3/8 in. (9.5 mm) and 1/2da, and minimum spacing between
anchors must be not less than 2.5 in.
Is ca2 < 1.5ca1 and ha < 1.5ca1? Yes/No

Note: If Yes, pryout may be precluded.

Is/are anchor(s) subjected to both shear and tension forces? Yes/No
