DESIGN CONCEPT

Week 7, Lecture B
AD 303 LANDSCAPING
WHAT IS DESIGN CONCEPT?
A concept is an idea, a theory or notion, but in architecture
we could also describe a concept as ‘an approach’ to the
design.

• Every interior/urban/landscape/
architectural project should be derived
from a concept

AD 303 LANDSCAPING
WHY DO WE DEVELOP CONCEPTS?
• In order to create a creative idea for projects
• To set a theme for a project
• To have a creative flow and idea consistent throughout the product or project

Types of concepts
• Analogies: looking at other things

• Metaphors: looking at abstractions

• Programmatic concept: looking at the stated requirements

AD 303 LANDSCAPING
Analogies
• Superficial: to take the same shape of something without any
change.

• Structural analogy: to make a structure of building from a

shape of something.
Metaphor
• Identify the relation between source and target.

• It deals with abstraction

Programmatic Concept
• Abstract ideas
intended mainly as
functional solution.

• Form follows function

• Function comes first
then astatic values.

• Examples: master plan

of cities, hospitals,
military academies.

• Urban planning:
relocation,
orientation, creating a
void.
DESIGN THEME
• Futuristic
• Industrial
• Sustainable
• Sensory
• Botanical
• Adaptive reuse

In a single project you can have too many concepts

under one theme
