enry Ford had to make the biggest decision

future, as well as the Ford Motor Co. The 1929

on automobile sales. While Ford’s affordable
cars were still selling, their sales numbers had
definitely slumped. Henry Ford was feeling
the pressure as Chevrolet and Plymouth both
unveiled new 6 cylinder engines to compete
in the market. He had been trying for awhile to
develop an X8 engine, similar to the ones used
in many aircraft, but his attempts to convert this
engine configuration to automotive use failed.
Henry knew a smoother running, more powerful
V8 engine would give him an edge, but history
had shown these engines to be too expensive
to produce for the affordable everyman’s cars he
was trying to market.
He had been producing V8 engines since he took over Lincoln Motor Co. in 1922. But these
were large, expensive engines made from bolting the cylinder assemblies and the crank case casting
together. This worked fine for the high-end luxury car market, but was out of reach for Ford’s working
class clientele. The answer he thought was to design a new smaller version of these engines made from
a single casting. This idea presented many unique engineering challenges.
No one knows whether Henry was afraid of failure or just protecting the project from the
watchful eyes of his competition. But he decided to keep his new V8 endeavor a secret. In the summer
of 1930 he sent a handful of trusted engineers to his Greenfield Village in Dearborn. The research team
was given the reconstructed Thomas Edison laboratory from Ft. Meyers Florida to work in. Here they
labored to bring Henry’s dream to life. Henry’s ground-breaking instructions to the group included
keeping the block a single casting, creating a valve train that would need no adjustment, and driving
the distributor off the front of the camshaft. As the designs took shape on blueprints, the patterns and
castings were carried out in secret at the Rouge plant to test their ideas. By the winter of 1931 these
new V8 creations were being road-tested in Model A’s. Ford committed much of his personal financial
resources to the development and production of the new V8 engine. If not for his personal wealth the
Deuce may have put Ford out of business. On December 7th of 1931 Henry boldly stopped production
of the Model A and announced his new 1932 V8 would be available by April of 1932.
In March of 1932 a legend was born. Production of the new Ford V8’s started, and a new page
in automotive history began. In spite of some early problems with the new engines these stylish,
affordable, more powerful cars did become a success. Henry Ford’s gamble had paid off. While the
design of the new engine was certainly an amazing feat of engineering, the planning and development
of tooling and machinery to produce these engines in the same amount of time as the previous 4
cylinder engines was just as important to the success of this undertaking. Production of these engines
with numerous changes and upgrades continued for 21 years until 1953. In 1933, under the guidance
of Edsel Ford, the Ford V8 car was completely redesigned to make the most of the new engine.
Ford’s success in the Elgin road race of 1933 gave proof to anyone who doubted Ford’s performance
superiority. The top seven finishers were all Ford V8’s. Fred Fame won the race in his 1933 roadster,
averaging 80.22 mph over the 205+ mile course, and hitting a top speed of 100.3 mph along the way.

The popularity of the new Ford V8’s continued and the improved performance available in these
light cars inspired an explosion of racing applications and years later a whole new hobby called “Hot
Rodding”.
Racing on southern California’s dry lakes dates back to the early 1900’s. Early racing began at
Muroc Lake (now Edwards Air Force Base) and spread to numerous other dry lakes in the area. The
popularity of this racing, and the number of car clubs supporting it, spread during the 1930’s and in
1937 the SCTA (Southern California Timing Assoc.) was established. When the Ford V8’s first hit the
dry lakes they found it tough to beat some of the highly modified “four-banger” powered cars, but
this soon changed as new performance parts for the V8’s became available. Dry lakes racers like Ed
Iskenderian and Vic Edlebrock Sr. began testing and producing new parts to modify the new engines.
They were both able to turn their hobby into a successful business venture. The origins of the term Hot
Rod and when it began are unclear. It became popular by the early 40’s and many believe it was an
abbreviation for hot roadster or the hot racing cams (known as rods or sticks in the lingo of the day)
that were being put into the V8 engines. Because of their light weight the 1932 roadsters were the first
choice of many racers. Many of the cars were driven to the dry lakes and then stripped of their fenders,
windshields, etc. for race day. Some even replaced gasoline with alcohol “fuels” for even more power
and increasingly better speeds on the track.
Most racing was suspended during WWII, but when our young hero’s returned home they found
a lot of used 1930’s V8’s awaiting them. The renewed energy and imaginations of these young people
couldn’t be stopped. The booming post war economy saw new speed equipment shops opened across
the country and hot rodding and racing in many forms spread with them. Abandoned air fields soon
became drag strips and idle horse racing tracks spawned dirt track stock car racing. Much of this racing
was dominated by the Ford V8’s until the mid-fifties.
Even today Henry’s V8 legacy lives on. Many hot rodding purists still opt for the legendary
engines to power their rides, and the performance equipment industry is still producing the goods.
Ron Main’s “Flatfire” a Streamline Bonneville racer sports a supercharged, fuel burning,1946 Ford
Flathead V8 that produces 700 plus horsepower and has gone over 300 MPH at Bonneville.

after his return from Vietnam in 1971, he spent the next 35 years as an industrial
photographer. During his time at Lockheed, Peter’s award winning “Journey into
the Imagination” photo was proudly featured at both Lockheed and Walt Disney’s
Epcot center, a presentation sponsored by Kodak and Disney. When Peter retired,
he switched his main focus from aircraft to cars and the authentic lifestyle of the
people who drive them, bringing the hotrod era to younger and older generations
alike. His work reflects the vintage, grainy look of the past captured through the
rugged, devotedly Americana filter.

Like a set of chess pawns, these lifters are key pieces in the Flathead valve adjusting game. The two lifters on left are probably
original. They are hollow and very light. The others are heavier aftermarket lifters in both solid and hollow styles. The variety
of styles shows different approaches to making the valve adjustments an easier task. Some came with key wrenches to aid
adjustment. Some people, including myself, preferred to drill holes in the block, so a nail or small rod could be inserted to
keep the lifter from turning during adjustment.

The Time Has Come to Beat the Heat ...


In my decades of driving and working on old Fords, I’d heard many tales told by fellow Ford
enthusiasts about improving the flathead’s cooling system by doing tricks like; “Take your water
pumps off and grind-off every other impeller fin” or “Fit thermostats into the hose necks” or
“Put flat washers in the heads to restrict the water flow” being just a few among many theories
said for turning heat-plagued flatheads into cooler runners.
Drake’s new impellers By really studying the flathead engines and diving deep into the design and evolution of the water
feature an 8-fin perfect helix
configuration for maximum
pumps, I learned that the 1 94 9 and later pumps had re-designed impellers which greatly improved
coolant flow at all RPM ranges the coolant flow, thus lowering the engine temperature. I also discovered that later truck and
commercial flatheads had water pumps with larger shafts, better seals and improved bearings
verses the earlier style’s simple bushings. By also studying the radiators and their ample cooling
ability, it became a simple quest; to increase the pump’s water flow while gaining longer pump life
through superior internal components.
I’d compiled my list of upgrades and made my own improved versions for our inquiring customers.
Now with thousands of Drake’s pumps out in the early Ford world, we’ve not received one
