CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

People nowadays are digital natives who grew up in the era of Google, social media,

and instant connectivity. The changing times mean that teachers and other non-teaching staff

need to continuously adapt to their evolving role. They will have to be able to facilitate

learning through new methods of teaching and various media, some of which may not even

exist yet. This is precisely why fostering creative and critical thinking in learner is

paramount. The American Library Association (ALA) defines Digital Literacy as the ability

use the information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and

communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. Digital literacy does

not mean IT proficiency. It requires thinking skills, an awareness of the necessary standards

of behavior expected in online environments, and an understanding of the shared social media

issues created by digital technologies. The Philippines has the opportunity to play an

enormous role in the digital evolution. Philippines has over 73 million social media users

according to the data report of Simon Kemp in February 18, 2020. The number of the social

media users in the Philippines increased by 5.8 million between April 2019 and January

2020, social media penetration also stood at 67% in January 2020. Furthermore, there were

173.2 million mobile connections in the Philippines in January 2020 and was equivalents to

159% of the total population. Digital literacy in Bicol region is continuously growing since

the Department of Education is imploring the digital media to utilize it as one of the basic

methods in teaching and other related practices, thousands of students and teachers in the

Bicol region are now experiencing the same thing that other regions in the Philippines are

facing in this digital evolution.


The study entitled Digital Literacy of Teaching and Non-teaching of College of Arts

and Sciences in CBSUA calabanga campus is all about the role of digital evolution in the

methods of teaching and other related educational practices both the negative and positive

effect to the teachers and students of the aforesaid university. By collecting data from the

respondents, the data will be sorted and verified by the researchers and thus will be ensured.

The significance of this study will be benefitted by the students, teachers, non-

teaching staff, and the University’s administrator. The study will showcase the different vital

practices which may be used to eradicate the struggles in adjusting and managing to the

digital technology.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research attempts to find vital information to the Digital Literacy of faculty and.

non-teaching of the College of Arts and Sciences in CBSUA – Calabanga campus. More

specifically it seeks to find the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of skills in utilizing digital technology of teaching and non-teaching

staff of the College of Arts and Sciences in CBSUA Calabanga campus?

2. How do the teaching and non-teaching staff absorb the evolving educational setting in

the era digital technology?

3. What are the impact of digital technology to teaching and non-teaching of the College

of Arts and Sciences in CBSUA Calabanga – campus in the aspect of providing the

platform of education to students?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The following are the objectives of the study:

1. To know the level of skills in utilizing digital technology of teaching and non-

teaching staff of the College of Arts and Sciences in CBSUA Calabanga campus.

2. To understand the effect of digital technology to the teaching and non-teaching staff

of the College of Arts and Sciences.


3. To know the impact of digital evolution in educational setting in the College of Arts

and Sciences of CBSUA Calabanga – campus.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be great benefit to the following:

STUDENTS. The results will provide the students with some vital and relevant information

about the effects of digital literacy both the positive and negative and how it can be avoided

or up hold. In addition, it will give the students realization about the efforts of teaching and

non-teaching faculty of the university. Furthermore, at the end of this study students would

finally know the significance of digital evolution.

PARENTS. The result of this study will give also the parents of the students an insight about

the evolving educational setting of CBSUA Calabanga campus and how will the parents help

to up hold the adjustment of both students and teachers.

TEACHING AND NON-TEACHING STAFF. The given data will give the teaching and

non-teaching of the College of Arts and Sciences a related information on how to up hold

teaching practices utilizing the new technology and significant realizations that the students

are appreciating the risk they are facing on the era of digital evolution.
ADMINISTRATION. The administration will too understand the struggles of students, the

teaching and non-teaching staff in digital evolution which somehow will lead to the practices

that the administration will provide to resolve this struggles for the greater good of the

community of the university.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This research is all about the Digital literacy of teaching and non-teaching in CBSUA

Calabanga campus. How digital evolution affect the educational setting of the university, the

students, and other related staff in the university.

This study focuses only in the teaching and non-teaching of the College of the Arts

and Sciences as respondents. This study assumed to be done within a month right after the

validation and approval of the aforementioned research.
