INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

To achieve successful learning, students need to be actively involved and interested in any form
of learning. They need to be very inspired and involved in learning to do this. Inherent
encouragement and genuine interest in the classes are expected from students throughout the
learning process.

Genuine dedication can lead throughout the student life to higher academic achievements
(Online recording of lectures and easy access to lectures and slides in most universities is
common. This has led to heated debates on the position of resources like PowerPoint (Horvath
& Lodge, 2015; Sørensen, 2015)

The decrease in the number of students attending lectures in person encouraged calls to
substitute lectures with other ways of teaching. However, these may not be effective or, be
successful in coping with the real issue of student engagement, as the number of students who
download slides and listen to lectures is often less than 20 percent in one week. After the
invention of the internet, the lecture did not disappear but changed from reading texts to
collecting learned material. Current developments in digital technology show that further
lectures are necessary.

The current student age group is often accused of being self-centered and lazy, and being
referred to as "Millennials’’ (Stein, 2013). This generalization ignores the challenges facing
students by balancing more busy lives with overlapping works/life/ study requirements (Abbott,
2013). and the increasing diversity within the whole group of students of cultures, religions,
ages, and lifestyles. This leads to a more focused and analytical approach to the current study
methodology. Students are used to quickly access and entertain information at minimal financial
and mental cost. Clear, well-organized websites like Wikipedia are especially useful for targeted
information collection. The job of educators is not only to help students meet the minimum
requirements but to encourage students to monitor and not just to absorb their learning.

There is a growing trend in higher education to transcend conventional teacher-focused

teaching to more student-centered methodologies that actively engage students in the learning
process (Hutching, 2015). When trying to improve the teaching environment, communication
with the classroom is considered a potential area of focus (Walsh, 2011).

Traditional education, also referred to as back-to-basic education, conventional education or

customary education, refers to traditional customs that society has traditionally regarded as
appropriate in schools. Many modes of change in education encourage the implementation of
graduated learning strategies which concentrate on the need for individual students to express
themselves more internationally.

The knowledge-based economy, which has brought about significant change in educational
technologies and organizations, has shown a growing demand in recent years for creative
modes of education. The advancement in technology and networking technologies is a dynamic
platform for promoting learning more flexible, more versatile, portable and on-demand. The new
economy needs more people to learn new knowledge and skills in a timely and effective way.
Such radical changes in the demands and technologies of education drive a transformation to
modern Internet learning, commonly known as e-learning.

To order to support learning processes to various areas and levels of knowledge or expertise,
digital learning and distance education contexts have been broadened. One of the subjects
most focus has been how academic achievement and learning outcomes can be maximised.
During online education performance, ICT auto efficacy or other factors have been described as
affected ( Honnicke, 2016)

Along with the technological advancements, the Philippine education system has also
been affected. New techniques and methods is being applied and practiced by both the teacher
and the students. Online courses were also made available along with this advancement, yet
our current education system is still coping up with almost new discoveries everyday, despite
this advancement, we still uses traditional, or semi-modernized learning system.
While the current education system in the Philippines is divided into three (3) categories
consisting Primary, Grades one up to six (1 up to 6) having the age bracket of six up to twelve
years old (6 up to 12 years old), Secondary, Grades seven up to twelve (7 up to 12), having the
age bracket of twelve to eighteen year old (12 up to 18 years old), and under the Tertiary is the
Universities and Colleges - Undergraduate Level. Vocational courses are also accessible.
Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL) is already practicing a semi-modernized teaching and
learning method by using smart classrooms and BlackBoard Learn (BBL) a software and
application for online teaching, learning, community building, and knowledge sharing. While also
practices the traditional teaching and learning method by having the students in the school
premises with assigned class schedule, classroom set-up, and physical presentation during
class hours, with a professor to teach the class.
Traditional learning system is build up of typical classroom set up, with teacher and
student both physically present. This teaching method and learning system is the first education
system that is still used up to date. Modern learning system, on the other hand, enables
students to learn through the internet, and online courses with the convenience of their own
home, and their selected time.
This research is conducted with the hopes of learning if modern or traditional teaching
method and learning system has an effect on the students both with their academic
performances and their perspective for the effectiveness of both traditional and modern teaching
method. And does online/digital day should be part of the senior high school curriculum in
Malayan Colleges Laguna?

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The statement of the problem is to learn the perspective, personal opinions and
preferences of senior high school students as to which teaching and learning method (either
modern or traditional teaching and learning method) is effective, and does it gives enough
experience to a student to be equipped in the work field from schools that implements and
practices online/digital day, and as well as students from Malayan Colleges Laguna. Upon
learning this, does online/digital day should be part of the senior high school curriculum in
Malayan Colleges Laguna?

The modern teaching and learning method is where students are taking courses
through the internet websites,  paid online courses, and an option of personal tutors. While the
traditional teaching and learning method involves a classroom set-up where the students were
to follow a certain schedule, and shall be physically present, thus enables the hands-on
experience, and social interactions.

The purpose of the study is to know the insights of the senior high school students from
schools that practices digital day and use it as data to know whether the online/digital day
should be officially part of the senior high school curriculum in Malayan Colleges Laguna. The
breakdown and specific research question is as follows:
 Does the senior high school students know the impact of both the modern and
traditional learning method?
 What are their insights about the said two methods?
 What are their insights with complete implementation and practice of
online/digital day have an effect on future work performance?
 What are their insights if the complete implementation and practice of
online/digital day gives enough experience to a student to make them equipped
in the work field?
 Does the online/digital day should be completely implemented and practiced of
the senior high school curriculum on Malayan Colleges Laguna?

OBJECTIVES
 To raise awareness about the pro’s and con’s of both traditional and modern
learning method.
 To encourage the student to utilize both of the learning methods.
 To produce relevant information about the insights of the students on both
learning method.
 To provide information about the perspective and insights of the students about
the traditional and modern learning method, if it should be completely
implemented and practiced in schools.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be a significant endeavour in promoting a good teaching approach to Senior High
School students in Malayan Colleges Laguna. This study will also be beneficial to the schools
who want to change their teaching approach. It could also help future researchers to further
know how different teaching approaches can affect their students’ academic performances and
future performance and possible approach in work field. Through this study we can help not only
the students to know if the teaching approach is (effective/efficient) in their academic
performances but also the school to know if it is already time to add online/digital day as part of
the curriculum. This can benefit students, teachers, staff and admins, the school itself, us— the
researchers, and future researchers who wants to further know the effects of trying different
teaching approaches and perspective of the senior high school students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study focused on the (effectiveness/efficiency) of digital learning approach to Senior High
School students of FEU Alabang and UST Senior High School that already practicesses the
online/digital day, and senior high school students from Malayan Colleges Laguna to know if
their insights to the matter, whether online/digital day should be part of the senior high school
curriculum in Malayan Colleges Laguna. To prove this, we are going to have a collection of data
from the students of the said schools. We are to know how it affects their studies, since during
elementary days, schools do not implement digital day. We will be conducting an interview with
selected Senior High School students regarding this teaching approach. Rest assured that the
other data given will be held at utmost confidentiality.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design used in this study is quantitative research. Quantitative
research is defined as using statistics to test hypotheses and predict using calculated amounts
and eventually describe an event using figures. The researcher has the opportunity to use
technically advanced statistical analysis by using numbers to ensure that the results have a
statistical relationship and are not merely a fluke observation (Kowalczyk,2016)
This research design is appropriate for this study since it allows researchers to
measure the learning effectiveness of online classes on  SHS students by gathering quantifiable
data.

DATA COLLECTION METHODS

This study is a survey research. The objective of this study is to assess the effectivity /efficiency
of online learning approach to Senior High School students of Far Eastern University Alabang
and University of Santo Tomas SHS. To be more specific, the objective is to see if online
classes can be an effective and efficient alternative to the traditional classes that students are
used to. Survey will be conducted and will be given to SHS students of the said schools to see if
the proposed online learning is an effective alternative to traditional face-to-face learning inside
a classroom. The data collected will be held with utmost confidentiality.

DATA ANALYSIS
The researchers will use descriptive analysis, the discipline of quantitatively describing
the main features of a collection of data; describes a set of data. This will be used to analyze the
data that the researchers will gather from both students of those that attends school that are
already practicing online day, and data gathered from students of Malayan Colleges Laguna
from the online survey that will be conducted. This will help the researchers to plot and
categorized the student’s reply on the given survey. The researchers aim to determine the
similarities from each student with their answers and contradictions of answers from all of the
respondents to further know if online day shall be practiced and be part of senior high school
curriculum in Malayan Colleges of Laguna.
