THE INVENTION OF GLASS.

Glass ____________________ in the Middle East more than four thousand years ago.
It ___________________by heating together sand and various chemicals. The mixture
gets harder as it becomes cold, but it never becomes completely solid. In some ways, glass
is like a very thick liquid. Old windows are thicker at the bottom than of the top, because
the glass slowly runs down over the years.
Glass can be made into many different shapes. Centuries ago, the ancient Egyptians
discovered how to shape glass around a core to make bottles. Then, in 100 BC, the
blowpipe _____________________. It is still used today for blowing glass into beautiful
shapes.

Nowadays, we use glass for many different things. It _______________ for windows, and
it also polished and shape to make eye-glasses, telescopes, cameras and microscopes.

Pilkington, invented a new process to produce large sheets of smooth glass in 1956.
Glass is not only transparent, but also brittle- it breaks into sharp pieces very easily . For
example in cars, we need special safety glass. It’s got a lot of layers so that it doesn’t break
into pieces.

THE STORY OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY.

The statue of Liberty Enlightening the world was a gift of friendship from the people of
France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and
democracy.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designed as a National
Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned in 1876.


When Bartholdi got back to Paris, he made a small model.
Statue was a woman, It was called Liberty.
It was declared as a symbol of freedom in the new world.
The statue skeleton was constructed from strong steel.
The Statue’s steel framework was made by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, better
known as the man behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Many people worked together, some of them on Liberty Head and Crown.
Other worked on the right hand and the torch.
The arm holding the torch was sent to Philadelphia.
The Liberty head was shown at the world fir in Paris.
Visitors were able to climb inside . In this way money was raised to pay the statue.
The Statue of liberty was constructed in Paris France.
It took nine years before it was completed in 1884.
The Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and it was packed in 214
Crates.
The crates were carried by train and then put on a ship to America.
The Statue was reassembled on her new pedestal in four months time.
On October 28th , 1886, the declaration of the Statue of Liberty took place in front of
thousands of spectators. She was a centennial gift ten years late.
