Giving homework

Since we all agree that homework is important for the ESL learner, no matter their level
or age, the issue of homework with adult learners is a tricky one. We need adults to be
completely on board for their language learning and that includes the completion of
homework
Tasks.

Here are some t ips on how can we get adult learners to do their homework!

1. Make is short and snappy. More than 10 minutes is time that they will struggle to
find. Help them work out when they can fit homework in their schedule. By doing
work outside the lesson, they will progress faster.

2. Make it relevant to what they have been learning in the lesson by using the
Practice activities or assign them a section from the learning plans to shore up
their knowledge.

3. Get them prepping for the next lesson with a pre-lesson activity or find a video or
an article to introduce them to the topic.

4. Make it relevant and practical. Learning is about applying knowledge to real life.
If their homework can be useful for them, make it so!

5. Vary the homework. Use the Conversation Starter videos, or the Listening activity
from the units combined with reading comp or vocabulary boosting activities.

6. Make it challenging but not difficult enough to put them off.

7. Always follow-up with them in the next lesson. Ask them how they got on, did
they have any doubts they wanted to clarify. Congratulate them for doing it!
