(Setting: Breaking News airing on television: Office)

News Reporter: [no space, ikaw lang nasa screen] Ross Horton here, date October 13 year
2021. Right now there’s an on-going investigation for the murder of Ms. “Good Writing”... right
now I’m recording this to recount everything we know so far of the case...
TOPIC #1 CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD WRITING

News Reporter: Now let’s see what we have here in the police investigation report about the
on-going investigation. Ha! her very own personal file, perhaps a shed of light to the life of a
writer before her death. Maybe these reporting and working on this big case could finally be
enough to impress my boss and finally have that promotion. Good Writing is said to have
CLARITY and FOCUS. [START voice-over] The victim let other people know what exactly her
purpose is in a manner that is concise and clear. It all starts with planning--to know what she
wants to convey and not just saying it out--so she won’t end up with ideas that might not be
comprehensible. This is important in keeping all the focus and ideas aligned, so nothing will stay
out of line and also leave little to no room for any misunderstandings. What’s more, in practicing
clarity and focus, Ms. Good Writing has also taken into consideration her audience. It’s likely
you will not get lost in what she is saying, or need to have to repeat things. [END voice-over]
When dealing with Ms. Good Writing, it will be a smooth and relaxed time because of the
controlled flow of ideas and the focus of what she want to truly relay.

News Reporter: We have here an excerpt of Ms. Good Writing’s diary… [START voice-over]
*clears throat* “Jack loves his pet butterfly. He always finds himself staring at his garden of
flowers mesmerized by the lingering butterflies all over his garden. The garden was a gift from
his mom and the butterfly was the gift from his uncle Joe, who is fond of insects. Uncle Joe is a
hardworking man. After work he goes to his wife’s bakery shop. He stays there to help his wife.
The butterfly sips nectar from the flowers. And blue is the color of the sky. What a pretty sky”
[END voice-over] … wait, hold on, that doesn’t seem right…

News Reporter: Apologies. It seems I was mistaken. That was made by Ms. Good Writing’s
estranged cousin, Ms. Bad Writing. It says so here in the diary… *clears throat then tries to
read* [START voice-over] I couldn’t comprehend what that was all about. It was so full of
different ideas that it became hard to know what the theme really was. [END voice-over] See,
this is why CLARITY and FOCUS is essential.

News Reporter: Ms. Good Writing also shows COHERENCE and ORGANIZATION. Just like
what I said earlier, the victim’s writing has a very visible flow that is arranged accordingly. There
is a sense of order to the unity of ideas transitioned in such a pleasing way. [START voice-
over] Everything Ms. Good Writing says is connected and coherent because there is one
controlling idea. It’s hard to be interpreted properly without that kind of organization so
everything needs to be aligned together to remain compelling to others. [END voice-over]

News Reporter (murmuring to himself): I bet this one never had that kind of problem before,
though… *clears throat* moving on. Ms. Good Writing adheres to her IDEAS and THEMES.
[START voice-over] It’s just that she has a main motivating idea which makes it easier to find
a starting place and from there make progress. That clarity, focus, coherence and organization
from earlier? All of that is because of this--because Ms. Good Writing has a defined idea in what
she was doing. She illustrate it through examples, details and descriptions. [END voice-over]

News Reporter: I see… isn’t that how many famous people do it? They have strong themes
and ideas. Everything revolves around it and paves the way from start to finish. Yes, that makes
sense. Next one is… Ms. Good Writing has STYLE and VOICE. . [START voice-over] It’s the
thing that tells people apart from each other, differentiating one from another by personality
alone. Everyone has a distinct “voice” of their own just by how they phrase things and arrange
words in a particular manner, from the perspective shiftings, the vocabulary and tones which
makes us more recognizable. It also encompasses grammar, formats, spelling, and
abbreviations. [END voice-over]

I see… Ms. Good Writing stands out because she has a style of her own and because she
follow through, this leads to a higher chance of consistency. People don’t get confused with her
Good Writing. Hmm, I wonder what kind of style and voice I have...

News Reporter: and ah, of course. Ms. Good Writing is also an upstanding, obedient citizen.
She follow the mandated grammar rules. (amused) As they say, the cornerstone of being
“decent” or “good” is to follow the law and observe the proper use of grammar. [START voice-
over] It can affect how much people will like you--of whether they can tolerate you from start to
end. Proper use of it lays out clarity and airs out confusion. We can be better understood by
others if we express ourselves using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. That’s why Ms.
Good Writing is so loved--because she follow this mandated rule in expressing herself and
engaging others all throughout.
News Reporter: Ms. Good Writing is also… THOUGHT-PROVOKING and EMOTIONALLY
INSPIRING. Of course. Ms. Good Writing is interesting if she can engage others to such an
extent. She’s clear and focused, coherent and organized, filled with good ideas and follow
themes, has her own unique style and voice and follow the grammar rules--it makes sense that
she can also elicit a response from other people. This is what makes Ms. Good Writing so…
good. Besides that, she also have CREDIBILITY and BELIEVABILITY. To be believed, claims
need to be accurate and grounded on facts. Ms. Good Writing is truthful and is skillful enough to
persuade people to believe her claims as she state it.

News Reporter: Ms. Good Writing also utilizes WORD CHOICES effectively. It’s the act of
choosing the right words and stringing them together the right way to effectively land an impact
on others. [END voice-over] Eloquent as she was, Good Writing has her skill down too… hah,
what can’t Good Writing do? So I guess that ends with the characteristics of beloved good
writing. That’s all I have for now. I’ll update this once we get new leads on the case, .

SCENE 5 (Setting: Crime Scene: Library)

News Reporter: Excuse me, may I interrupt for a while?

Detective #1 (motion to stop): I’m sorry, this area is off limits, a thorough investigation is
currently underway.

News Reporter: Forgive my intrusion, I’m a reporter currently assigned to work on the case. I’m
sorry to have overheard all of that. (busy looking at the area)

Detective #3: This is considered trespassing, isn’t it? (squinting eyes)

News Reporter: No need to get so serious! I just came here to draft a report! I took a few notes.
How about it? I can read it out to you if you want.

(some detectives look at each other, as if unsure)

FBI Director (sighs with exasperation): Go on. The two suspects have already been reported
anyway. It’s no secret anymore

News Reporter (as if jotting things down):

Great! Thank you very much. Now, let’s see… traces of both Creative and Technical narrative
have been identified in Ms. Good Writing. It is generally defined as a representation of a series
of events, and while Technical Writing focuses more on the content, Creative Writing leans
more on the structure. There is a contrast between the two, such that the attractiveness of the
flow of the story engages readers more in Creative while Technical discourse theories that can
be used to formulate narratives using logical relationships that exist between segments of a text
that show how they are dependent on each other. Creative Writing relies on ingenious ideas
and creativity while Technical Writing focuses more often on scientific context and the
coherence of content. Yet even for being so radically different, both Technical and Creative
have exhibited some characteristics shown by Good Writing, showing that there is indeed a
connection between the three of them from the very beginning. Hm… so how was that?

SCENE 6: ENDING (Setting: MS TEAMS)

Detective #4: (visibly skims through the folder) this doesn’t make sense at all! Is it… (looks
around as if in shock)

Detective #2: wait… wait no--doesn’t that mean the killer is…

Detective #3: Hold on, there must be some kind of  mistake!

Detective #1: let’s be rational here, there’s no way--

FBI Director: ALL THIS TIME THE KILLER IS--!

News Reporter: (smiles as they face the screen and make a motion like shooting it with his
finger)

*effect: shattered screen*

*static*

*black screen*

*roll credits*

In the end, there is no superior or inferior between Creative and Technical. In the end, they both
exhibit the possibility to be “Good Writing” but it’s always the person that writes that determines
whether something turns out to be good… or it turns out to be bad.
