Summary of the webinar on “Skill Development for

Sustainable Employment”

On October 11th, “Apex DMIT Ltd” organized a webinar where 5 distinguished panel
members took part in discussing the skills required for competing in the world today. The
topic of the webinar was “Skill Development for Sustainable Employment”.

As the webinar begins, after some exchange of greeting the host for the webinar, Zara
Mehbub, country director & CEO, Apex DMIT Ltd; addresses one of the major concerns of
the webinar which is “the major shift from traditional way of working to a compete online
based working situation caused by the Covid- 19 pandemic which than resulted in demands
for totally new set of skills”. Then she throws in some questions which are “Is our workforce
ready to take on this change?” and “Are our students ready for what lies ahead?”. Then she
invited, Dr. Bikarna Kumar Ghose, Managing Director, Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority,
ICT Division; to start his prestation on “Hi-Tech Park Authority’s effects and initiatives in
order to bring employability in a sustained manner”.

Dr. Bikarna Kumar Ghose, then started his presentation where he stated that “there is a
difference between the market demand and the actual level of skills of the graduates of our
country.” He also stated that “our graduates have acquired the knowledge but lack the skills
required” and so he stated that they are providing high end labs to universities to try and
provide the students the required skills. He finished his presentation by going through what
“Hi-Tech Park Authority” will be doing for the students.

The host, Zara Mehbub then goes on to Ms Rubaba Dowla, County Managing Director,
Oracle Bangladesh; and asks her about the skills her company looks for when going for
requirement. Ms. Rubaba then gave the answer by mentioning 4 skills where the first skill is
“the sales representatives mast have human skills and data driven insight” the 2 nd skill she
mentions is “the employees must follow a collaborated approach” the 3 rd skill she mentions is
“employees must be savvy virtually as they would be in person” and Ms. Rubaba ends her
part by mentioning the last skill which is “continuous training to be up to date with new
platforms”.

Then the host, Zara Mehbub ask Dr. AKM Saiful Majid, Chairman, Grameen Bank, former
director of IBA, University of Dhaka; to provide 3-5 skills which is making the IBA students
ready to face the world. As an answer Dr. AKM Saiful says “acquiring knowledge and skill is
a lifelong process so there isn’t any particular skills one can acquire”. He also added that
students must try to acquire Data driven skills and learn about blockchain technology. Lastly,
he added that the government, the academia and the industries must work together to build a
way to how students can acquire required skills for the future.

The host, Zara Mehbub then asks Mr. Mike Kazi, Chairman, Apex DMIT ltd, president, EO
Bangladesh; about some skills when looks for when requiting. As the answer rather then skills
Mr. Kazi mentions that, they mandate their employees to read 12 books a year and give
presentation on that for self-development.

At the end of the webinar everyone mentions that personal skill development is very
important for the new generation and in the future how this will be the bridge that will
connect our graduates to their desired industries.
