Procedures

Attention-getting procedures
Record different means of getting the entire class’s attention when they are engaged in an
activity. (This may be different for different subject areas.)

- Interactive timer – when students are working on activities I will provide a visual timer
for them on the board
- Call and Response – “Can I get a- ““Whoop, whoop!”
- Bell - if necessary, I will bring in a small hand bell that will signal students to stop what
they are doing and look at me

Question-answering procedures
What expectations will you have when students are asking or answering questions? (Remember
that a question should get everyone thinking about an answer and thinking that they may be
expected to provide an answer.)

- When somebody is talking, there will be no interruptions allowed

- Students will raise their hand when they would like to speak, and can speak when called
on
- In certain circumstances, I will let students know when it is appropriate to call out
answers (ex. small group discussions, large group debates)

Transition Procedures
What routines will you establish around the…

Bell schedule:The bell signifies that students should be seated with all materials needed
for the lesson so that attendance can be taken and class can begin on time. IF students are
not prepared on time, they will miss out on our class reading time.
Start of class: When students arrive in class, they will be provided with an outline of the
day on the board including what materials will be needed. They will be responsible for
getting all of the things that they need before the bell rings. Once they are prepared, they
may respectfully visit with classmates until the bell rings.
Start of day: Lunch orders??
End of class: At the end of class students will clean up their area and will be dismissed
by the bell. No running out of the classroom will be tolerated.
End of day: Students will do a pick-up of the floor and stack chairs and put textbooks
away. All materials will be put away neat and tidy (ex. paperwork in binders, etc.).
Change of activities:
Change of subjects: N/A
Distribution of materials: Any materials students need for the day will be made
available at the back of the classroom for students to access before class begins.
Accessing of equipment: Students will have access to materials at the back of the
classroom that they can access anytime. These materials are student responsibility, so if
they chose to mistreat and/or lose materials, they will go without. Students will be
required to get all their materials gathered before the bell rings.
Classroom clean up: Students are expected to clean up after themselves. The last period
class will ensure that the room is neat and tidy before dismissal.

Daily and Safety Procedures

What will you expect of your students and yourself with regard to:

Late arrivals: Students who are late must bring in a late slip from the office. Students
will be responsible for checking in either with me or a peer to figure out what they
missed.
Absences: Students will be responsible for checking in either with me or a peer to figure
out what was missed. I will make myself available during lunch breaks to help students
catch up if they request it.
Use of cell phones and other communications technology: Cell phones are not be used
during class time unless students are instructed to do so to look something up, play
Kahoot, etc. If a cell phone is being used inappropriately during class time, I will put it in
my desk drawer until the end of class.
Bathroom breaks: Students must ask a teacher to use the washroom to ensure we know
where all students are. In case of an emergency, students can let another student know
where they are going on their way out the door.
Pencil sharpening: Pencils can be sharpened before or after class, or during independent
work time only. There will be extra pencils for students at the back of the room that they
may use, however; these pencils are the student’s responsibility. If they run out, they will
have to find their own.
Student telephone calls to home: Students may use the classroom phone with
permission to call home before or after class, or during class in case of an emergency.
Individual seatwork: During independent work, students will be expected to work
quietly and raise their hand if they need help. When permitted, students will be allowed
to work with peers quietly. If the noise gets too loud, they will have to return to their own
seats.
Playground and free time rules: Students will follow school rules during this time.
Late homework or assignments: Any late assignments are student’s responsibility to
get handed in. They will not be docked any marks for late work.
Missing homework or assignments: Any missing assignments are students’
responsibility to get handed in. They will not be docked any marks for late work,
however; they will receive in incomplete if work is not handed in.
Homework reminders: I will remind students daily about assignments being due. After
the due date, I will put a list of missing work on the board for students to see.
Student illness or injury: Students will be responsible for acquiring missing work due to
illness or injury. I will keep contact with parents to ensure students are set up for success
in these situations.
Fire drills: School policy – I will review evacuation policies/routes with students on the
first few days of class. When we hear the alarm, we will immediately exit the building
out the nearest exit and line up by grade.
Lockdowns: School policy – Students will be gathered in a secured space away from
doors and windows, and the classroom door will be locked. Attendance will be taken and
we will wait in the classroom until we are given further instructions.
Positive Relationships

Quickly establish a class list and seating plan so that you can begin to learn the names of
your students. What seating arrangement are you planning and how will you decide who
sits where?

Students may sit where they choose on the first day. This will become the seating plan for the
first 1-2 weeks in order for me to learn student names. After this, students will be allowed to
choose their own seat if they can do so without being disruptive or inappropriate. If behaviour
gets out of hand, a seating plan will be created and implemented by me. I will save the seating
plan in PowerSchool and will check when I do attendance that students are in their assigned seat.

Begin recording student interests. What system will you use to do this?

I will have a word document with a table to record student interests. There will be a table for
each class, and appropriate space to record any important information. I will use my student
learner profiles that will be completed the first day of class to begin this process.

What specific things will you do the first day and first week to encourage student-with-
teacher and student-with-student interactions?

I will learn student names as fast as possible to ensure the beginning formations of solid
relationships. We will be playing an ice breaker game the first day, and throughout the week I
will work on establishing a routine that includes constant discussion and group work.

What body language and tone of voice will you use in different situations throughout the
day ~ at the start of class, with large and small group instruction, and when dealing with
inappropriate behaviour?

The beginning of class will be started with a calm but stern tone of voice. I hope to show
students how excited I am about the material we will be covering throughout the semester. When
dealing with inappropriate behaviour I will use a stern but caring voice. I will not raise my voice
unless needed for students to hear me over noise.

Interventions

Classroom Rules
Record the rules you will establish, whether alone or with your students, and list a few possible
consequences if a rule is not followed. It’s good to have student input but be sure to cover all of
the important areas. With consequences, it’s better to rehearse a few ideas than to think them up
on the spot.

Rule: Treat every person and object with respect.

Consequences: Students will lose privileges of using classroom materials if they cannot treat
them respectfully. If they cannot respect their peers and teachers, they may be asked to sit at an
independent table, leave the classroom, or speak with administration if necessary.
Rule: Have a growth mindset.
Consequences: Students who are struggling with this will be given multiple opportunities to
improve upon this skill. As the teacher, I will consistently monitor this skill and point out
students who model the skill as well.

Rule: Be a learner, not a finisher.

Consequences: If students find themselves rushing through their work without understanding
and taking in the information, they will be asked to go back and do the work properly or will be
assigned something extra to ensure outcomes are being met.

Rule: Be kind.
Consequences: There is zero toleration for bullying in our classroom. Any sort of bullying
behaviour will result in a conversation with administration.

Strategies
Record your strategies for dealing with some common student misbehaviours.

Distracted (ex. by cellphone or spinner): Student’s will get one reminder to put their
distraction away during class time before the object is placed in my desk for the
remainder of class. If there is a reoccurring problem with a student, a 1-on-1 conversation
will take place to discuss strategies going forward.
Talking: Students will get one reminder before they will be asked to change seats.
Off task: Students will get one reminder before they will be asked to change seats. There
is a table located directly beside my desk that they may be asked to sit in at any time.
Name calling: There is zero tolerance for bullying. This will result in a 1-on-1 discussion
with myself, and depending on the severity administration may become involved.
Pushing and shoving: There is zero tolerance for bullying. This will result in a 1-on-1
discussion with myself, and depending on the severity administration may become
involved.
Running in classrooms or in hallways: 2 warnings before a 1-on-1 discussion will take
place to discuss the issue.
Swearing: 2 warnings before a 1-on-1 discussion will take place to discuss the issue.
Copying someone else’s work: Plagiarism will be discussed at the beginning of the
course. Copying someone else’s work will result in the student having to redo the project
completely.
Taking things that don’t belong to them: Respect of property is a classroom rule, and if
this rule is broken students will lose privileges of using classroom materials. If this
situation cannot be resolved by myself, administration will be contacted.
Writing or scratching on desks, furniture, lockers, or walls:
Fighting: There is zero tolerance for bullying. This will result in the students involved to
discuss the situation with administration.
