Step 1 Apply edge banding to all wood edges that will not abut
another piece of wood and will show. To apply edge band,
cut the banding a little longer than the piece’s edge. Preheat
an iron; lay the banding centered on the edge and iron it to
the wood. Use a metal roller to press the banding onto the
wood. Apply heat again to any banding that didn’t adhere.
Hold a file nearly perpendicular to the banding and file away
any excess. See “Build a Box,” page 32 for more on banding.
Step 2 Begin to assemble the main box by attaching the ends
and the divider to the bottom. Using a Kreg pocket-hole jig,
drill two pocket holes along the bottom edges of the two
ends and the divider. Drill two holes along the top edge of the
divider and of the end that will go on the shelving side. Run a
bead of wood glue along all of the edges that will be attached

seated. The slim table itself requires just six cut boards—each leg and tabletop is made from two boards
connected using a pocket-hole jig and screws. Heavy-duty shelf brackets connect the legs to the tabletop.

CLUBHOUSE
A SPOT TO CALL HER OWN
QUITE POSSIBLY MADE ELISE
PERSSON THE HAPPIEST
PRETEEN IN TOWN. With the
basement taken over by Elise’s teenage brother
(and his video games and friends), a shed in
the backyard became the go-to place for Elise’s
artistic activities and girlfriend gatherings.
Instead of building the shed themselves,
Anders and Angie Persson of Charlotte purchased
a prebuilt shed from Sheds USA through Home
Depot. After selecting a model online and
making sure it was available in their area, Angie,
an interior designer, customized the shed by
choosing from a variety of upgrades, such as the
French doors that open out to welcome fresh air
yet allow plenty of natural light when closed.
Angie worked closely with a landscaper to
determine how the shed would be incorporated
within their existing landscape. The Perssons
painted the structure the same color as the house.
For the light-filled interior, Elise and Angie made
purposeful design choices to establish a creative
“clubhouse” for Elise and her friends. “I wanted
something that could grow with her and grow 2
with us,” Angie says.

natural dye plant workshop lean in. “The roots
are used for medicinal purposes, but they also
create a yellow dye. In fall the plant’s berries
are harvested for a purplish dye color.”
As the group carefully scavenges in the
stunning Columbia River Gorge between
Oregon and Washington, Heffner explains
she started WildCraft for moments like
this—to connect people, craft, and land.
“Today, people can get materials from
all over the world,” she says. “But if you

“Part of the charm of natural dyes is
not knowing exactly what color you will
achieve,” Heffner says. “A blue flower doesn’t
necessarily mean blue dye. If you had an
apple tree in your yard, and in spring you
clip some branches, you’ll get a different
color than if you clip it in summer due to
changes like climate or rainfall. That’s why
it’s tricky to get the same color twice.”
But no one is complaining. “I don’t
need consistency to feel successful,”
says student Sarah Morton-Erasmus.
“The process is what fascinates me.”

petite sink vanity, doubling storage in a small bathroom, opposite and above.
Match the piece to your room’s color palette with spray paint. (We chose navy
for the drawer fronts and metallic gold for the hardware.) Remove drawers,
pulls, and label holders. On a protected surface and in a well-ventilated room,
spray the drawer fronts and hardware with an oil-base primer. When dry,
sand and wipe clean. Spray with desired colors. Let dry and apply a second
