Harappan Pottery
During the Harappan period, the pottery made by people was highly advanced. They
had great technical skills and used various techniques to make different types of
pottery, like jars, dishes, basins, etc. They also experimented with different shapes
and styles of vessels. They used pottery for both utilitarian and cultural purposes.
Some of the pottery was made for everyday rough use like cooking and storage,
while others had elaborate designs and symbols that represented religious and
cultural beliefs. The Harappan pottery also had a lasting impact on later cultures.
The emergence of Lustrous Red Ware reflects technological adaptation and
innovation, incorporating earlier traditions while introducing new techniques and
styles. The shift from the Harappan culture to the Lustrous Red Ware Culture
signifies cultural continuity and resilience. The Harappan pottery traditions did not
vanish but underwent a transformative phase, influencing later cultural
developments. The use of graffiti marks for symbolic communication on pottery might
have set a precedent for similar practices in later cultures, contributing to the
development of symbolic languages.
● The Harappan people made strong, durable pottery using fine clay, making it
sturdy and long-lasting.
● Some pottery had a mix of red and buff colours, often painted in chocolate or
pinkish hues.
● They also crafted rough-use pottery with coarse surfaces, incorporating grit
like dung or powdered pottery.
● For everyday cooking needs, they created coarse grey pottery, often
decorated with incised designs.
● During a transitional phase, a shiny red pottery emerged, featuring
non-carinated dishes and beaded rims.
● Another type, Black-and-Red Ware, resulted from changes in firing techniques
and had graffiti marks.
● The pottery included various shapes like jars, bowls, and spouted jars,
evolving over time.
● Decorations evolved too with linear, geometric, and naturalistic motifs like
animals and plants.
● The pottery reflects a cultural shift, showing that the Harappan culture
changed over time rather than suddenly disappearing.
The Harappan civilisation, flourishing from around 2600 to 1900 BCE, showcased
remarkable technical and technological prowess in its water management system,
encompassing both water supply and drainage. This ingenuity is evident not only in
major cities like Mohenjo-daro and Harappa but also in lesser-known sites like
Dholavira.
The unique features of Dholavira's water supply system highlight the ingenuity and
forward-thinking approach of the Harappan people. Their ability to develop and
implement advanced water management strategies, as seen in Dholavira, played a
crucial role in sustaining urban life in challenging environmental conditions.
Harappan Textile
The Harappan textile production represents a remarkable facet of the advanced
civilisation that thrived in the ancient Indus Valley. The evaluation of Harappan textile
technology reveals several noteworthy aspects:
